Abstract

E. Washburn Hopkins interpreted, in 1902, the values for  from the data referred to in some verses contained in the Bhīṣma Parva of the Mahābhārata where  is a non-terminating and non-recurring fixed ratio of the circumference, , of a circle to its diameter, . The values interpreted for it by him from the data referred to for the dimensions, including , , and vipulatva , of the Rāhu, the Moon, and the Sun are 3.5, 3.5+, and 3.58 respectively. R. C. Gupta found, in 1990, these values to be the yielding of the gross misinterpretations. He pointed out that the value implied in the data of each of the three cases is only 3. The present paper is mainly aimed at probing when and why 3 was used in the Mahābhārata as the value for . The date when those above verses were incorporated in the Mahābhārata is the one when 3 as the value for  was used in the same if consistency is preferred to as a sound criterion in determining so. It tends to 500 BCE in its range extending from 500 BCE to 500 CE. It may go even beyond 500 BCE. 3 as the value for  seems to have been borrowed from some older forms of the Purāṇas into the Mahābhārata. If simplicity, prevalence, and traditionalism are preferred to as a sound criterion to calculate for a given , no other option for  is better than 3. The support for this option was available not only in the interior of India right from the Ṛgveda but also in the exterior of India at least right from the old Babylonian text.

Abstract

This article is intended to reveal the ecological aspect of Kuttara Kandha Dewa Purana Bangsul, a text in which it is described that Mount Batukaru is one of the holy areas in Bali Island. It is considered a place where the god of fertility resides; therefore, its ecosystem needs to be maintained. Such a signification is interesting and important to be investigated. The other reason is that, physically, the Mount Batukaru area is a water absorbing area as well as a nature reserve area. The problem of the study is how Mount Batukaru is pictured and signified in the text. The data were collected using the observation, reading, note taking, transliterating, and translating techniques. The theory of Semiotics proposed by Roland Barthes was employed. The result of the study shows that Mount Batukaru is considered the center of the energy of plants; therefore, it is recommended that plants be maintained and respected as the God’s physical form. It is expected that the result of the study may be used as one of the references to save the environment as one of the world’s current strategic issues.

Abstract

Hindu women who are already in the Grhasta period play an important role in the family. In their married life, women have several obligations for the harmony of their family. The word ‘woman’ comes from the word ‘wanită’, the feminine sex, which means beloved, wife, girl, woman, female (Semadi Astra, 2000: 372). Based on that sense, the word ‘woman’ means beloved, indicating that women are part of social life and family is part of the composition of social creatures that spread love to the surrounding environment, likewise their effort to enforce the Swadharma in their life. However, there are several obstacles regarding the efforts of women in implementing their Swadharma to create harmony in the family, society, and workplace. The Hindu women in Bali began to show their existence in their family life, society, nation, and state. Women's participation in the family is very meaningful. A woman as a wife and mother in the family has an important role in creating the harmony of the family as well as mental development of her children. In addition to taking care of the family, now women also participate in helping the family finances. Hindu women in Bali do not want to be housewives only and ask the husband for the household expenses. Many women are now beginning to participate to help family finances by working at home and outside. Even some mothers really want to fight alone for their children. It simply proves that women can also act as the head of a family just as a father.

Abstract

Polemics emerge when religion is faced to the fact that there are supposedly visitation of intelligent beings from other planets in many cases from ancient times up to now. Vedic literature as basis of Hindu religious teachings is one of many religious resources which can be used as reference to this inquiry. This descriptive-qualitative study aims to (1) clarify whether Vedic Scriptures mention about extraterrestrial life, or intelligent life outside Planet Earth, and (2) enlist categories of extraterrestrial life as mentioned in the Vedic Scriptures. The methods used are literature study and documentary. Result of the study reveals that Vedic Scriptures, especially the four Vedas, Puranas and Itihasas clearly mention about existence of extraterrestrial species (alien beings) and their interactions with humans since the Vedic era. These extraterrestrial beings are of different categories which are more elaborately enlisted in some major Puranic literatures.
