This study aims to identify architectural elements in kalang houses and find out what factors influence the differences and similarities in the processing of architectural elements in kalang house. This study uses descriptive methods through case studies in the field with analysis through qualitative methods. Methods of data collection through direct observation, interviews, documentation and supported by literature studies. The results of this study indicate that the differences and similarities of architectural elements in homes are affected by several factors such as the owner's socio-economic (profession), history, functions and activities from the past to the present, and site conditions (dimension, form, site position of the circulation path). The Mosque architecture, in fact, should not only accommodate pragmatic activities but also must have a spatial configuration related to the symbolic ritual activities that could stimulate the congregation’s awareness in entering the sacred space. The current research discusses the relationship between the sacred ritual of group worship and the spatial configuration of Mosque architecture. It aimed revealing how the sacred function of congregational rituals is correlated to the spatial configuration of Sulthoni Plosokuning Mosque and the specific aspects that become the indicators of the correlation. The analysis uses an elaboration of universal sacrality theory, the concept of rituals in Mosque architecture, architectural configuration theory, and architectural anatomy theory. The result of analysis showed that of the seven aspects of spatial configuration being discussed, four aspects were found to have dominant relationship with sacred ritual worship, three aspects had less dominant relations and one aspect has no relationship with the sacred ritual of worship. © 2020 Nadya Wicitra Paramitha, Purnama Salura

Understanding about of the existence of local and modern elements in building design method is necessary to cultivate and strengthen the local value to be preserved in the modern era and to enrich the culture itself. In the case of this P-House study we can describe the existence of local and modern values in the building into the concept of tread, shape, space, structure, and material and then to find out the dominating aspect between local and modern values of the three building segments. The results of the process will demonstrate the dominance and placement of local and modern elements chosen by Budi Pradono in designing the P-House. The study used a descriptive method to describe the study object, analytic method to dissect the study object with theory, and interpretive method in drawing conclusions in an attempt to understand the dominance of local and modern values in the design method as well as to define the form of acculturation used or classified through the design of residential buildings. © 2020 Adityo Purnomo, Bachtiar Fauzy

Activity in Bandung city square as a public open space with open field concept Bandung city square is an icon of Bandung, known by the public as a public open space with a field in the middle. The shape of the square has changed to resemble a city park with the addition of new facilities in it such as seating area, play area, sport area and so on. The changes affect its function as public space and the activities formed in it. The purpose of this study is to identify patterns of activities and their correspondence with the shape of the square as a public space in the city of Bandung. This study is carried out through stages (1) mapping the functional area based on its physical arrangement; (2) identifying activities formed in it and (3) interviewing the users. The result of the study indicates that the types of activities in Bandung city square are more diverse due to the addition of seating area, play area and renewal of the concept of the field. But besides that, the placement of shade trees in each sitting area needs to be considered so that the square is not only active at night, but also during the daytime.

This research aims to uncover various forms of acculturation of local and modern architecture in terms of various aspects of the form of acculturation, also to see which one is more dominant between local and modern architecture in the Casablancka Residence building. The Archetype Theory is then used to uncover the architectural phenomenon of Casablancka Residence building. Through a descriptive-analytical-interpretative approach, the characteristic of the acculturation will be revealed. The results of this study found a stronger dominance of local elements whose outlines appear on the roofs and floors of buildings that use strong local forms and materials, while modern elements are more dominant on the walls of buildings dominated by modern glass materials. The benefits of this study are expected to contribute positively for the community to raise the awareness of the importance of locality in building and preserving local culture and architecture. The other benefits are to increase architectural knowledge for academics and practitioners.

Abstract

The application of kejawen concept on Javanese traditional houses Javanese society has a unique philosophy of life. It is known as kejawen and is applied in daily life, manifested in symbols and rituals pertaining to their houses. A house for the Javanese is not merely a place to live, but it is also a place to represent many symbols reminding the philosophy that gives power to the owner. Javanese traditional houses have already been previously researched, but many of these researches emphasized more on the physical aspects, rather than on philosophy of kejawen, which try to comprehend the reality intuitively. In order to gain a deep understanding on this matter, field observation was carried out for certain period of time, using descriptive qualitative approach. The research result shows that the Javanese house shows a perfect union between macro cosmos and micro cosmos. Omah’or house is derived from the word "Om"and “Mah”. ’Om’ means the father of space and "Mah" ‘lemah’/land means the mother of the earth. ‘Omah’ for Javanese people is a manifestation of macros and micro cosmos. © 2020 Bintang Padu Prakoso, Herman Wilianto

Abstract

The consistency of pangimaman, liwan, and pawestren in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan, Bantul, Yogyakarta (1970-2019) Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan is one of four Pathok Negara Mosques which act as the eastern border of the state in the era of Sultanate of Yogyakarta. The Mosque has gone through many physical alterations especially within its current spaces. However, behind these alterations there are spaces whose existence have been consistent since the mosque was established until now. This raises questions such as what are the consistent spaces in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan and what affects the consistency of those spaces. This study uses qualitative-descriptive method in order to collect data and informations about the development of floorplans and spaces in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan. The analysis is conducted by using diachronic method and Cartesian Coordinat System (CCS). The findings of the study reveal that the existence of pangimaman, liwan, and pawestren are consistent space in Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan. This consistency is affected by the palace’s authority as the owner of sultanate’s mosques (kagungan dalem), including Masjid Pathok Negara Babadan itself. © 2020 Denny Huldiansyah, Tarcicius Yoyok Wahyu Subroto
