Abstract

One of the biggest challenges students have while trying to improve their language abilities is speaking anxiety in English, particularly for EFL learners like those at SMKN 5 Kerinci. The purpose of this study is to determine the reasons behind students' speaking fear as well as the methods teachers employ to help students become more comfortable speaking English. This study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, gathering data through questionnaires, interviews, and observation. According to the results, the primary causes of student anxiety include things like poor language skills, a fear of making errors, low self-esteem, and a lack of environmental support, particularly from family. Gradual speaking practice is one of the best teaching techniques for lowering nervousness. fostering a positive learning environment in the classroom and motivating pupils to practice more at home. Parental engagement is still low, though, therefore the school plays a critical role in fostering students' growth. To assist kids grow more comfortable speaking English, this study suggests improving interactive teaching strategies, encouraging parental participation, and establishing a secure and encouraging learning environment.

Abstract

The issue of spelling variation between British English (BrE) and American English (AmE) in English- language tourism communication is often overlooked in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction, particularly among learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In reality, such variations can significantly influence how professionalism and message clarity are perceived in global communication contexts. This study aims to explore the spelling preferences used in spoken tourism English among two EFL learners, employing a qualitative case study approach. The research subjects were two fifth-semester students from Universitas Aisyah Pringsewu which were selected using purposive sampling. Data were gathered through transcripts of role-play simulations and reflective interviews, and analyzed using thematic coding and a linguistic observation rubric. The findings reveal that both participants predominantly used AmE spelling, influenced more by exposure to digital media than by systematic linguistic awareness. Nevertheless, BrE forms still emerged, particularly in contexts perceived as formal or institutional. These results highlight a limited metalinguistic awareness of spelling variation, which contributes to inconsistent register use in professional tourism communication. Therefore, it is recommended that English language instruction for tourism explicitly incorporate training on spelling variation and contextual usage to foster communicative competence that is both professional and adaptable in international settings.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the kinds and meanings of deixis, as well as its potential recommendation to teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). This research employed a qualitative research method case study design to understand the phenomenon that the research subject experienced, such as behaviour, perception, motivation, action, and so forth, was the goal of qualitative research (Moleong, 2017). In this research, the researchers used two kinds of data sources. The primary data and secondary data. The primary data was movie script of Mavka: The forest song movie by Malamuzh and Oleksandra Ruban and secondary data was journals that related to deixis. To collect the data, the researchers applied triangulation in term of documentation technique. To analyse the data, the researchers applied triangulation. This study identified 23 instances of person deixis which include first-person, second-person, and third-person references. The researchers also found out 10 places deixis, 12 times deixis, 5 discourses deixis, and 6 social deixis.

Abstract

This study explores how English and non-English students perceive vocabulary enhancement through listening to English songs on Spotify. A total of 175 students, comprising 56 English majors and 119 non-English majors, participated in the research. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, which employed Likert-scale indicators to measure students’ attitudes, strategies, and challenges, and semi-structured interviews that allowed participants to elaborate on their experiences. The analysis employed a qualitative descriptive approach, enabling the researchers to identify recurring patterns across both groups. The findings reveal that English majors adopted more strategic and academic approaches, such as analyzing lyrics and applying new words contextually, whereas non-English majors engaged more casually yet still benefited from repeated exposure and emotional engagement with music. Spotify’s distinctive features, particularly real-time lyrics, replay options, and playlist customization, were reported as highly supportive of vocabulary acquisition. Nonetheless, challenges such as fast tempo, unclear pronunciation, and idiomatic expressions remained obstacles, especially for English majors. Overall, the study highlights that Spotify, as a digital music platform, offers a flexible, accessible, and engaging medium for vocabulary learning, making it a valuable complementary tool for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of code-switching in the lyrics of six songs by the Japanese rock band X Japan: Dahlia, Scars, Longing, Rusty Nails, Tears, and Forever Love. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research identifies and categorizes code-switching into three types: intersentential, intrasentential, and tag switching. The research instrument played an important role in obtaining the research results. Creswell (2009, p. 164) stated that in qualitative research, the main instrument was the researcher. The researcher uses some steps in analyzing the data, which are, first observing the data or information available in the data sheet, second classifying the data based on the kinds of code-switching used, third recheck and make sure all the data is well organized. Describing and discussing the code-switching used, and last drawing a conclusion based on the data analyzed. A total of 123 instances of code-switching were identified, with tag switching being the most prevalent (46%), followed by intersentential (37%) and intrasentential switching (17%). The analysis indicates that English insertions enhance rhythm, emphasize emotion, and broaden the appeal to an international audience. These findings underscore the linguistic creativity within J-Rock music and imply that code-switching fulfills both artistic and communicative functions within multilingual song lyrics.

Abstract

This article was aimed to find out the significance average score and motivation between Jigsaw and Conventional Technique. Due the interpretation of this study, it found that: (1) there was a significant difference in reading achievement between the students who were taught by using Jigsaw and those are taught using conventional technique since it was found that the result was 0.024 it was lower than significant level (0.05), (2) there was significant difference in reading achievement between the students who have high motivation by using Jigsaw and conventional technique since the result was 0.002 and it means that lower than significant level (0.05), (3) there was significant difference in reading achievement between the students who have low motivation by using Jigsaw and conventional technique since the result was 0.000 and it was lower than significant level (0.05), and (4) there was an interaction effect of technique used and student’s motivation in improving reading achievement since the result of interaction effect was lower (0.042) than the significant level (0.05). Based on the result, the writer conclude that Jigsaw and motivation gave the significant influence for student’s narrative reading achievement since there was a significant improvement before and after taught Jigsaw technique.
