Abstract

This research is aimed at figuring out the similarities, dissimilarities, and its contribution to TEFL. The qualitative research method was used. To collect the data, the researchers used documentation technique. There were 18 students of English Department of Universitas PGRI Palembang as the subject of this research. To analyze the data, the researchers used qualitative analysis. The findings revealed 4 similarities in heading, salutation, complementary close and signature and 2 dissimilarities in salutation and body of the letter based on the theoretical analysis. Also 5 similarities in heading, salutation, body of the letter, complementary close and signature and 2 dissimilarities in heading and body of the letter based on students’ writing exercises of English and Indonesian letter-writing in Job application letter. In brief, these findings can be utilized to develop teaching materials and supplemental resources in teaching writing.

Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the subjects that should be accomplished by EFL students at Tridinanti University. Surely, the mastery of English phonetic symbols may have the relation to the pronunciation ability. Hence, the objectives of this study were (1) to dig out the information whether or not there was a significant correlation between EFL students of Tridinanti University’ phonetic symbols mastery and their pronunciation ability and (2) to find out how much the students’ phonetic symbols mastery contribute toward pronunciation ability. The method used in this research was correlation design. There were 50 students as the population of this research, and the researchers took 34 students as the sample of this study using purposive sampling technique. This research data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment formula to know whether there was a correlation between students’ phonetic symbols mastery and pronunciation ability. There were two instruments of tests, they were phonetic test and pronunciation test. Based on the result, it was found that the pearson correlation coefficient was 0.466. It can be concluded that there was a fair correlation between students of EFL Tridinanti University’s phonetic symbols mastery and their pronunciation ability. The value of R Square in regression analysis was 0.218. It can be assumed that the students’ phonetic symbols mastery contribute as much as 21.8% toward pronunciation ability.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to know whether or not a significant influence in speaking ability after the students with positive and negative speaking habit being taught by Communicative Language Teaching Approach, identifying the significant intraction effect of Communicative Language Teaching Approach and speaking habits on student's speaking ability. In this study, the writer used two stage random sampling. The data were collected by using pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample t-test, Independent Sample t-test and Two-Way Anova. The finding of this study is the results of speaking ability between students with positive is higher than students with negative speaking habit being taught by Communicative Language Teaching Approach. It can be concluded that Communicative Language Teaching Approach can improve student’s speaking Ability.

Abstract

This study discussed about using Talking Stick Method on students’ speaking skill at MAN 3 Kota Jambi. The goals of the research are to find out the effect of Talking Stick Method on Students’ Speaking Performance after being taught by using Talking Stick Method and to find out significant different between students’ who are taught by using Talking Stick Method and those who are not. This research used quasi experimental method with quantitative approach. Sample of the research were 60 students which experimental class was 30 students and control class 30 students. The data collection is used pre-test and post-test. Data analysis is used speaking test. The result of this research shows that applying Talking Stick Method affected on students’ speaking performance. It can be seen at paired sample t- test and independent sample t-test. The result of the average students’ speaking score from the same group who taught by using Talking Stick Method got score 0.000 which can be seen from criteria of hypothesis if the score lower than 0.05 it means Ha is accepted. And the result of independent sample t- test shows that the mean of different was 13. 26667 and the  significant 2-tailed ? 0.05 (0.000 ? 0.05). It can be seen there are difference effect of students’ speaking skill between experimental and control class. To sum up, it can be concluded that there was any difference significant effect of students’ speaking skill between students’ who were taught by using Talking Stick Method and students who were taught by using conventional Method at MAN 3 Kota Jambi.

Abstract

This research   examined   to find out: whether or not there was correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, among 35 students of seventh graders of junior high school. In this research used the correlation design to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. The data was collected by documentasi and test and analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment SPSS 20. Based on the data analysis, the result indicated that the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension (rxy) was 0.655 higher than r-table 0.373. The findings provide there was a correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension.

Abstract

The use of blog as a medium in activities learning will give new nuances between lecturers and students. Problems in this study is whether the use of blogs as a medium of presentation material can improve learning outcomes and student activity in English for Civil Engineering subject. Utilization of blogs as learning media has not been done optimally. This is because many lecturers do not understand how and what steps must be taken in utilizing blogs as media learning. This study applied literature review in obtaining data. This study was carried out at the Department of Civil Engineering, Ambon State Polytechnic from August to November 2022. In this paper, the steps for using blogs as a learning medium in lecture activities are described. This study begins with studying various literature and the results of similar studies to get an overview regarding the use of blogs as learning media. After this study was carried out, information was obtained that various problems in the civil engineering department related to learning media could be overcome by using blogs as learning media. In the future, it is hoped that lecturers can utilize blogs as learning media so that they can attract more students' interest and attention.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it is effective to use think aloud strategy in teaching reading comprehension to the eleventh grade students at SMAN  9 Banyuasin. This research used quasi-experimental. The sample were 61 students which taken through convenience sampling. The data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test. . The result of t-obtained was 4.649, t- table was 1.67. As we know, t-obtained was higher than  t-table. It means that it is effective to teach reading analytical exposition text by using think aloud Strategy to the eleventh grade students of  SMAN 9 Banyuasin.

Abstract

Attitudes refer to the behavior of how people respond to their own language or are being taught. A qualitative research design with 27 students of Non-English Major at Private University. The collected data was questionnaire and in-depth interview. The data were analyzed using the percentage analysis and thematic analysis. The result indicates students’ attitudes towards L1, L2, L3, L4 etc. In opinion, L1 and L2 were still maintained and used in daily activities, whereas foreign languages such as L3 or L4 seem to get much more exposure through social media or formal domains. In the feeling aspect, the majority of students were excited to learn their languages that were implemented in the classroom due to challenging and fun. However, foreign language as their L3 or L4 was still distracted from learning in the classroom. In language use, L1 and L2 are used in the surrounding environment for communicating with their relatives, friends, and etc., L3 or L4 seems to be required for formal domain, social status and future career. Building on these results, techniques and strategies could be applied in the classroom and the parents could encourage their mother tongues to use in a certain place and keep on maintaining to encourage students’ attitudes.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of language elements that are needed in learning and communication. The aimed of the study was to find out whether teaching vocabulary mastery using fly swatter game in vocabulary mastery significant or not. The method used quasi experimental method. The population of this research was all the seventh grade’ students of SMP Negeri 6 Palembang with total was 372 students. The samples took out were 68 students from 372 students by using purposive sampling method. They divided into the experimental and control group. The data were collected by using written test, those were pretest and posttest. The result of the test was analyzed by independent sample t-test. The mean in posttest of experimental group was 72.71, it was higher than the mean posttest of the control group which was 58.65. The result of T-Test obtained significance (sig. 2 tailed) was 0.002, which less or lower than 0.05. Since the sig. 2 tailed was less than 0.05, so the null hypothesis Ho was rejected and the alternative hypothesis Ha was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery taught using Fly Swatter game than those who are not.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of using video clip in the development of listening skills in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The study utilized an experimental research design with a quasi-experimental methodology. The participants of the study were the eleventh-grade students of SMA Ethika Palembang. Pretest and post-test data were collected from both the experimental group, which received video clips, and the control group, which received the lecturing method. Paired sample t-tests were used to analyze the pretest and posttest data, while independent sample t-tests were used to compare the post-test results between the two groups. The results of the paired sample t-test showed that both groups demonstrated improvement in their listening scores after the treatment. The analysis of the data revealed that there was a significant difference in the listening scores between the two groups.
