Abstract

In this internet era, the issue of market globalization has led and encouraged both individual and cooperative businesses to improve their creativity for selling products widely. However, studies that underpin this essential issue in linguistic concerns are still limited. Studies on the rhetorical structure of English sales copies, for example, have been rarely conducted, while investigating this fundamental issue is urgently conducted to improve product sales globally. In responding to this urgent need, I investigated the rhetorical model of English sales copies. Data in this study are 30 English sales copies posted on Instagram. These data were collected by three students taking a course in creative writing. For the analysis, I employed genre-based analysis using a top-down approach. The analysis discovered a rhetorical model that fitted the rhetorical structures of the present data set. The model contained three important functional moves, namely establishing a positive impression, establishing customers’ interest, and facilitating the purchasing process. To realize these functional moves, copywriters employed some possible strategies. Compared to earlier literature, the present finding has differences from those found in literature, on the one hand, but similarities, on the other hand. For example, establishing customers’ interest, and facilitating the purchasing process are obligatory, while establishing a positive impression is conventional in the present study.

Abstract

This study explores teacher professional identity (TPI) of novice English teachers in Indonesia by looking at their narratives related to their experiences before and after they entered the profession. The central question leading this inquiry is “What realizations about the profession shape the participants’ TPI?” The data were collected from four participants through emails and follow-up interviews by phone. The data, then, were co-constructed to create coherent narratives of the four novice teachers. Further analysis was conducted by identifying their new realizations and awareness of being English teachers. These realizations about teaching and the profession were discussed in terms of the TPI elements. The findings indicate that realizations about various aspects of TPI of the novice teachers could lead to a better understanding of their professional identity formation before entering the profession, after entering the profession, and at the time of COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021). The TPI claims in the three stages indicate the complex process of TPI formation and the implications of the process can be the foundation of English teacher education and professional development reform.

Abstract

This study delves into elementary school teachers’ evaluation of children’s books featuring Indonesian national heroes. Despite the significant roles of historical figures picturebooks, research on how teachers incorporate it as useful resources in teaching is limited. In fact, the availability of quality historical fiction picturebooks that portray stories of national heroes in Indonesia is also scarce. Through snowballing technique, 25 teachers voluntarily participated. Through an online questionnaire, they were asked to provide their opinion about three Indonesian hero storybooks, which include (1) Aku Kartini [I am Kartini], (2) Wahidin Soedirohoesodo Sang Dokter Bangsa [Wahidin Soedirohoesodo the Doctor of The Nation], and (3) Menyusuri Tempat Tinggal Srikandi Aceh Cut Nyak Meutia [Strolling the Residence of an Acehnese Heroine Cut Nyak Meutia]. The participants were asked to examine aspects like text complexity, plot, illustration, moral values, and pedagogical strategies for classroom implementation. The data were analyzed qualitatively to describe the teachers’ evaluation on the quality of the books. The findings emphasize the significance of continuous teachers’ professional development, especially in book selection and utilization. The consensus surrounding Book #1 “Aku Kartini” suggests its potential as a valuable resource for teaching national heroes, as well as a model of quality historical fiction picturebook. We argue that adult’s evaluation, particularly teachers, in selecting books for children to read, play a pivotal role both in the children and in the practice of teaching.

Abstract

Previous studies have revealed that social media (SM) was implemented in EFL (hereafter, EFL) students’ online informal learning of English (OILE). However, the information about learning goals, pros, and cons of doing these activities remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to explore (1) the learning goals of online informal learning of English via SM and (2) the students' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of using SM to facilitate OILE. This basic qualitative study recruited 14 EFL students at a university in Indonesia to join in semi-structured interviews. The interview results were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. The findings revealed that EFL students engaged in OILE via SM for various goals (mostly for form-focused and meaning-focused goals), focusing on learning and practicing language skills. However, those learning goals primarily focused on form than meaning. In addition, the participants confessed that doing OILE brought advantages to cognitive and affective domains. Unfortunately, the participants also perceived that doing such OILE also brought some disadvantages. From the findings, we offered some implications to advance EFL learning through OILE via SM.

Abstract

Despite the abundance of studies investigating translanguaging pedagogy, recontextualizing learning material has rarely been a concern of recent studies. The present study employs content analysis and critical discourse analysis to examine two global CFL textbooks used in Sri Lanka to evaluate their compliance with translanguaging practices. Three imperative aspects of translanguaging pedagogy, namely representation of culture, instruction language, and nationalism and socio-cultural polarization were the key areas of concern in content analysis. In the culture domain analysis, references from the textbooks were fed into 10 child codes and 3 parental codes in NVivo12. The results demonstrated that there is a critical inequity in the representation of local and global cultures in the textbooks which is especially distinct in the interlocutors and their nationality options. Socio-cultural polarization of the source culture with the West was evident in the critical discourse analysis and adaptation was predominantly promoted as a unilateral affair where the foreign learner continually adapts to the target culture. The study proposes that contextual sensitivity and ideological impartiality should be ensured in recontextualizing textbooks for translanguaging practices in Sri Lanka from three aspects, namely incorporation of L1 into textbooks, integration of multiculturalism and freeing textbooks of ideological and hegemonic practices.

Abstract

Research into language teacher identity construction has proliferated in recent years. However, studies examining identity construction from an integral perspective of EFL teacher educators’ past, present, and future narratives seem sparse. To fill this lacuna, the present study was designed to explore five Indonesian EFL teacher educators’ identity construction from their past, present, and future narratives. This study’s data were generated through multiple life-historical interviews with the five participants. The thematic analysis showcased that language teacher identity is constructed as a continuum from the teachers’ past experiences as EFL learners, present experiences as lecturers and doctoral students, and future narratives as imagined teacher educators. The findings also revealed that the participating teachers constructed their language teacher identity through complex and context-dependent experiences in their past, present, and future narratives. Based on the study’s findings, we offer a novel approach to studying language teacher identity construction employing teachers’ three-dimensional narratives. This approach enables teachers to understand themselves and their relationships with social environments through the interconnectivity of their past, present, and future narratives.

Abstract

This study investigates the meanings embedded within song lyrics from the Acehnese local band Apache13’s album Bék Panik (translated as ‘Don’t Panic’). The primary aim is to analyze the types of meaning present in these Acehnese songs using a semantic approach. The objectives are to identify and categorize meanings based on six distinct types: conceptual, social, affective, collocative, connotative, and associative. The qualitative analysis of the song lyrics revealed 186 distinct meanings. Conceptual meaning was the predominant type, with a majority of instances, followed by social meaning, affective meaning, collocative meaning, and connotative meaning. Notably, no occurrences of associative meaning were found. The prevalence of conceptual meaning in the lyrics suggests a focus on social criticism, conditions, and personal narratives within Apache13’s songs. Conversely, the limited use of connotative meaning aligns with a preference for direct and explicit expression among Acehnese youth, reflecting contemporary cultural norms. This study contributes to understanding the nuanced meanings conveyed through contemporary Acehnese music, reflecting generational differences in expressive language use.

Abstract

Issues regarding attitudes and perceptions about English and its cultural politics have been widely and significantly reported in literature. As an international language, English signifies multiple and complex benefits and challenges. This paper aims to extend the discussion by interrogating students’ attitudes and unpack their views towards promises of English in Indonesian Islamic higher education (HE) settings. Participants in this study were undergraduate English Literature students who had engaged with the introductory principles of (Critical) Applied Linguistics (CPL). Data was collected through questionnaires (with closed and open-ended questions) from 58 participants, 19 males and 39 females, and semi-structured interviews with four students. The findings elucidated different views on varieties of English as students showed a quite moderate view of varieties of English from non-inner circle countries instead of treating them as something deficient. Dependency on native speakers’ English variety, however, seems to be negotiated in that the participants view intelligibility as more important in communication than, for instance, correctness. Moreover, students in the present study view speaking English with a local accent as something acceptable. Although not absolutely certain, they still presume that having competence in English can offer better hope in their future.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the integration of Google Translate as a machine translation tool in the EFL students’ thesis writing process. Framed within the explanatory sequential mixed methods, the study utilized a survey and an open-ended interview. Using a purposive sampling technique, this study included fifty EFL students in North Bali, Indonesia, in the survey and five students voluntarily in the interview session. Measured using the Gregory Formula, content validity results from the two raters showed that the survey and interview guide were valid (.1) and reliable (α=.809). The survey data were analyzed using Ideal Mean Score analysis and the interview transcripts data were analyzed using Interactive Model analysis. Results reveal that Google Translate benefited the students in the thesis writing process. The interactive model analysis resulted in main themes of the strengths, comprising sub-themes of functions and features of Google Translate and weaknesses, involving sub-themes of contextuality, grammar accuracy, and academic integrity issues. It can be concluded that the use of Google Translate can be helpful in assisting students’ thesis writing with several considerations.

Abstract

Writing for scholarly publication is commonly perceived as a daunting task in academic writing classes. Myriad studies have been geared to uncover theoretical significance within this process. However, little attention has been addressed in analyzing novice writers’ self- motivation construction in writing for scholarly publication. This present study was designed to investigate how self-motivation of research, writing, and publishing that emerged in the publication process encountered by Indonesian novice writers. Three Indonesian novice writers were involved based on previously set criteria. The data were elicited using a semi-structured interview and then analyzed descriptively. The results of this study indicated that the participants employed appealing attempts and that they were engaged in the complicatedness of writing for scholarly publication. These ways assisted them in sustaining their self-motivation in the publishing processes.  Based on the findings, this study offers possible pedagogic attempts to help refine scholarly publication training, especially for novice writers in tertiary education.
