Abstract

One of the characteristics of a Dynamic Usage-Based (DUB) approach to the second language is schematic patterns emerge through use and interaction where the intense focus is in input. Video or movie as an example of authentic input often provides a natural context for conversations to emerge among the students and teacher in class since students want to know or share their opinions about the characters or events in the movie. This recent study's objective was to demonstrate that movies or videos provide an authentic input in L2 class. This study's population sample was 30 students of the second-year English Education program in 2021 at Artha Wacana Christian University Kupang in Indonesia. A simple random sampling technique was applied to select this sample. The study was conducted over 12 teaching periods using the DUB approach, where the procedure was processed by a pre-test, treatment, and ended by post-test. The instruments used in this study were speaking class lesson plans and English speaking tests (both pre-test and post-test). The Mean and Paired Sample T-Test was employed in the data analysis. The result shows a significant difference between students' English speaking competence taught using movies and those taught using a conventional method. Therefore, using movies in classroom teaching is in line with the DUB approach as one of its principles is authentic input.

Abstract

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, this article presents online Peer-Review Circles (PRC) as an innovative and collaborative approach to academic writing, mainly proofreading and copy-editing processes. It aims to engage novice second language (L2) writers in online joint review and increase their understanding of pre-reviewing scholarly papers before submission. The authors had observed that a large number of doctoral students are still considered novice writers. Therefore, there was a need for a practical approach to improve their review skills and engage them in online PRC activities. Grounded in Monologue-Dialogue-Discussion (MDD) Circles (Manning & Jobbitt, 2018), this article extends its potential to be adopted and used beyond the classroom and mandatory ELT contexts. MDD requires three consecutive stages: 1) primary reviewer’s monologue, 2) primary and secondary reviewer’s dialogue, and 3) writer and the reviewers perform a group discussion. These activities will help the writers to look after the manuscripts simultaneously from a PRC perspective. We also developed peer review Feedback Questions (FQs) to guide the reviewers to perform meaningful discussions. The output of the PRCs will likely be an initial review or a pre-evaluation process to improve the manuscript quality, readability, and publishability.

Abstract

Project-based learning is a learner-centered process that gives freedom to the students to design their own project works. Though numerous research results on the enactment of Project-Based Learning instruction have already been reported, only a limited number has reported its enactment in an online classroom situation. This present research, employed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), unpacks the students’ learning experience after being exposed to Virtual Project-Based Learning, henceforth Virtual PBL. The researchers administered in-depth interviews to eighteen students who came from two different classes in an Islamic Higher Education in Indonesia. Findings show that five major themes emerged from data collection and analysis; increase active participation and motivation, develop critical thinking skills, participate in collaborative group discussion, build peer and lecturer communication, and develop skills in using digital tools. This result contributes to the earlier studies dealing with students’ learning experience of Virtual PBL instruction. It also adds the pedagogical implications to the research related to Virtual PBL enactment in Islamic higher education setting.

Abstract

Today the world of social media has immersed in the world of education and influencing the world of the students’ activities. It is inevitable that students in many levels of education have been using social media in their life either as students or as interactants in the certain community. Therefore, it is interesting to see the existence of social media among the students. In this study, the researchers highlight the use of social media among the students in the university. This research applied a qualitative research design taking 60 students of English in the universities in Makassar. The data of this research were collected by employing a survey of Google Form and analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The result of the research shows that the English students in the universities in Makassar gave their positive perceptions about the use of social media. The informants has been using social media in their daily life and also nowadays has applied the social media as a tool of learning English. Some advantages and strategies in using social media in learning English were displayed in this study. Findings from this study will become important input for students themselves in the university context and also as beneficial information among the university practitioners in order to make use the social media in the university not only as communication tool but also as learning and teaching tools.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to propose a possible way to integrate cultural knowledge into English teaching by using children literature. It also presents an alternative method for researchers to investigate personal identity by using a character from literature as a case study. The article also offers an example of an exploration of the main characters’ identity in Jasmin Warga’s Other Words for Home. The story represented a life of a twelve-year-old girl from Syria who left behind the war torn city order to live in United States. Her identity formation process was analyzed through the theory of Symbolic Interactionism. Themes found from her journey of moving into new culture included “self as an English language learner” prior to moving to the United States and “self as an immigrant” was presented when she entered American society.  her  This teaching method might be useful in promoting English learners to become integratively motivated which can be achieved by understanding the cultural and ideological aspects and by developing a cross-cultural awareness of the how to become part of community that speak the target language.

Abstract

English educational tourism (EET) is a new breakthrough in the tourism industry in eastern Indonesia, carrying the concept of a global village to promote economic development, education, and tourism. Research on this topic has been well documented in the literature; however, it is necessary to understand the communal attitudes from a local community perspective. It seeks to explore the public’s perception of this innovation based on three dimensions of attitude: (affective, behavioral, and cognitive). This study employed an exploratory case study through an online self-perception survey and interviews with the local communities. Data generated from the online survey and focus group interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. As a result, the study found that local communities have positive emotions (thoughts and feelings) towards the global village initiative and generally believe that it will bring significant contributions to the local communities’ economic growth, education, and tourism. Thus, they will participate and take necessary actions to promote the village in the global societies. This program will enhance community economic growth, English immersion education, and the tourism industry in eastern Indonesia. In other words, this village will catalyze the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the hospitality industries, such as transportation, accommodation, recreation, and food and beverage businesses.

Abstract

The proliferation of assisted technology has been widely used in language learning, but this should be able to accommodate inclusive language learning which has become an important issue in today’s English language teaching and the higher education landscape in Indonesia. This study examined the perception of EFL slow learners in terms of the integration of an inclusive technology with authentic multimedia assisted language learning (AMALL). It discovered the impact of authentic multimedia assisted language learning on their speaking performance. This study also analysed the benefits of this technology perceived by the students. A mixed-method sequential exploratory was employed to examine students’ perception of EFL slow learners in speaking performance. A sample of 30 EFL learners was selected purposively to participate in this study. The study also examined the impact of this application by comparing the results of pre-test and post-test of the students’ speaking performance based on the analytic oral language-speaking rubric namely speaking, fluency, structure, and vocabulary. The findings of the study show that students perceived authentic multimedia assisted language learning provides some advantages in terms of usefulness, easiness, and effectiveness for speaking skill. There was also an improvement in speaking performance

Abstract

The study aims to portray the implementation of bilingual language policy and its implications for multiculturalism and internationalization of higher education. The meta-analysis research design enables the researchers in this study to search the available published public documents that are relevant for this study. The result of the study indicates that the implementation of language policy on bilingual education in higher education contexts facilitates the preservation of local and national identities, fosters multicultural pedagogical interaction, and supports the internationalization of universities. This study recommends further in-depth investigation in a multicultural setting with longitudinal approach.

Abstract

Using self-assessment as part of writing courses is key to improving strategic and affective self-regulation skills. The aim of this study is to investigate how self-assessment develops EFL students’ writing self-efficacy. To conduct this research, an embedded mixed-methods design was implemented with a sample of sixty control and experimental participants. This involved a post-scale of writing self-efficacy to collect quantitative data, and an interview administered to twenty participants after the experiment to explore their perceptions of their writing ability. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and an independent-samples t-test at α=0.05.  Analysis of the data revealed that the mean score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group on the self-efficacy scale, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant on the same variable. Data from the interview indicated that the majority of the participants voiced high perceptions of paragraph writing ability. Based on these findings, it can be assumed that self-assessment is a learning strategy which can enhance learners’ knowledge of criteria of good work and thus, can improve positive perceptions of their writing ability.  This means that self-assessment can maximize their self-efficacy beliefs. Based on these findings, the study suggests recommendations for teachers to include self-assessment in their writing courses.

Abstract

Assessment is the central point of educational progress; it is the assistant to teachers during and after teaching and learning. One of the assessment genres, assessment for learning is referred to gathering information during teaching and learning, to determine students’ success in learning. The study aims to determine the understanding of assessment for learning strategies and challenges may face in Amharic language teachers.  The participants selected from all levels of general education (1-12 grades), through cluster random sampling, were 180 Amharic language teachers for a questionnaire survey. In addition, twelve (12) teachers and four (4) teachers were selected through cluster random sampling respectively for an interview and informal conversation. The data acquired through the closed-ended questionnaire was analyzed by a one-sample t-test, while the data obtained through an open-ended questionnaire; interviews and informal conversations were analyzed in qualitative verbal description. The results are presented in two ways; the data from the close-ended questionnaire shows that Amharic language teachers are practice assessment for learning strategies in the classrooms, which is statistically significant (P < 0.01). On the other hand, the data from the open-ended questionnaire shows most Amharic language teachers’ reliance is on the old form of assessment and their awareness assessment for learning strategies is limited. In addition, the challenges, based on the practice of assessment for learning strategies in faced in the language classrooms; lack of transparency, lack of knowledge and experience, school administrative problems, lack of training, and reliance on assessment preference are faced. Based on the findings, the study concludes with recommendations that can be implemented to develop assessment for learning strategies in the language classrooms; to minimize the challenges faced by Amharic language teachers in Ethiopian general education (1-12) schools.
