Abstract

This descriptive research focused on the localization of Chinese teachers in the Philippines and how it became instrumental in reducing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Chinese language education. Through the review of existing studies and pertinent documents such as memorandum orders, agreements and training plans, this paper provided an in-depth analysis of the current situation of localization of Chinese teachers. Currently, there were three (3) modes of cultivating local teachers for Chinese language teaching, namely in-service teachers’ training, undergraduate degree program and master’s degree program. The mentioned programs have been successful in producing local teachers who are capable of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Furthermore, it is through the local teachers that the impacts of the pandemic on Chinese language education in the Philippines have been reduced. The localization of Chinese teachers has been of great help in addressing the challenge of not having volunteer Chinese teachers and uniformed instructional materials in the midst of pandemic. Moreover, opportunities for the localization of Chinese teachers were also discussed. Lastly, guided with the findings and conclusions, the paper provided recommendations for further development of Chinese language education in times of pandemic or other natural calamities which may disrupt the face-to-face classes.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how students' perspectives on learning English use 21st century learning strategies through a multimodal approach to teaching English for EFL students. A lecture was conducted online for one semester (four months) by using Islamic topics as learning materials. The learning materials were presented and discussed, then students were asked to write or talk about the topics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to data collection through the provision of questionnaires and interviews with 47 students of the Islamic Broadcasting Program at the Faculty of Islamic Religion at a private Islamic university in Bogor, Indonesia, in the English language course. From the data collected through a set of questionnaires, it can be concluded that, 1) the majority of respondents are interested in using Islamic materials to learn English; 2) the majority of respondents state that Islamic materials assisted them in improving their English language skills; 3) The majority of respondents are interested in using online Islamic resources. Furthermore, respondents stated that the multimodal approach to learning is very interesting, very good, and can help them to learn English. In addition, students wished that direct interaction between lecturers and students could continue to function well. Hence, the use of multimodal-based materials could provide interactive opportunities between lecturers and students.

Abstract

Interlanguage is the most fruitful issue in the field of second language acquisition. In the interlanguage phase, Indonesian learners of English tend to alternate between two forms of language features to express the same language function where a variation of language forms will be exhibited to mark the variable of linguistic function. Variability in phonology of interlanguage is the most interesting subject to investigate based on markedness differential hypothesis theory. This study is aimed at finding out (1) marked sounds of English fricatives: [θ], [ð], [ʃ], and [ʒ] which are indicated as interlanguage variants; and (2) how interlanguage sound variants emerge based on surround the varying element. There were 30 college students of English study purposively selected to become respondents in this research representing advance and intermediate proficiency of English speaking. The data were taken from two types of task namely word list reading and sentence reading. There were 600-word tokens containing target marked sounds of fricative [θ], [ð], [ʃ], and [ʒ] obtained from the data collection. The analysis was done quantitatively to find the percentages of non-interlanguge sounds and interlanguge ones produced by respondents. The result showed that fricatives such as [θ], [ʃ], and [ʒ] have phonological variations in interlanguage with certain positions of word being pronounced. These phonological variations emerge due to the generalization of pronunciation by similar-ending sounds, the certain vowel sound preceding marked sounds, and the absence of consonant clusters in learners’ native language which bears the variation of certain marked fricatives of English.

Abstract

AbstractThe speaking strategy use of students is perceived to be successful in L2 learning and competent English users. The aim of this study was to pinpoint the influence of gender differences on students' speaking strategies use. It also intended to identify the influence of  study duration on students' speaking strategies use to learn speaking skill at Wolaita Sodo University, Ethiopia. The participants of the current study were 70 (34 female and 36 male) English major students in the Academic Year of 2020. A descriptive comparison design was utilized for this study. The data were collected from the targeted population using a questionnaire and interview whether gender and study duration influence students' speaking strategies use or not. The results denoted that there were significant relationships between females and males in employing speaking strategies to learn speaking skill. Gender has no an influence on students' speaking strategies use to exercise oral communication. However, the finding denoted that there was statistically a significant difference between second year and third year EFL students in using speaking strategies to promote their speaking proficiency. Study duration has an influence on students' speaking strategies use to train oral communication. Therefore, this study recommends learners should use appropriate speaking strategies based on their interest to promote their speaking proficiency; they must be trained and supported to employ different strategies develop their oral communication skills.

Abstract

Although the preservation of the Indonesian culture is deemed beneficial, the lack of folklore texts readily available for instructional purposes makes teaching and learning the Indonesian culture challenging. This study aims to develop web-based teaching materials, integrated with Indonesian folklore for intermediate- level students of Indonesian for foreign speakers (BIPA). A Research and Development (R&D) method was employed with a 4D research model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). Four teachers and seven students were purposively selected, based on prior experience in teaching BIPA and ownership of a device and ability to operate a software. A questionnaire, expert validation sheet, users assessment sheet, and interview guide were employed to obtain the expected data. The results of the study revealed that all teachers had used textbooks and the Internet, but not all teachers used enrichment materials from the government. They further stated that they were interested in the development of teaching materials with folklore texts. The expert validation results showed that the developed web-based teaching materials was feasible with a very good predicate. Based on a limited trial (independently) by users, BIPA teachers and students responded that the prototype was feasible with a very good predicate

Abstract

There has been a growing interest in gender and language in recent decades. This study examines how women control their language facing specific, especially when angry.  Minangkabau women are a subject in this research. The gap that underlies this study is that a Minangkabau woman, popular with polite language as a medium for language, is required to manage her anger in a speech in everyday life with its politeness. Conversation analysis is emphasized to explore forming a speech act in gender interactions in wedding cooking sessions and grocery shopping. These data are the words of Minangkabau women when interacting in the cooking process for weddings in several places in West Sumatra, Indonesia. A total of 17 Minangkabau women participated in the conversation. The concept of forming a speech ac related to how Minangkabau women speak the psychopragmatic approach used in analyzing the data. The results revealed four forms of Minangkabau women's angry language when interacting in the cooking area for marriage and grocery shopping. The implication is related to participants' relationships, closeness, and social status. This suggests that those three values are ingrained in Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Motivational currents, a relatively new concept in the field of language learning, has contributed to understanding how long-term motivational energy can be sustained among learners. Despite such critical contribution, little is known on how one of its core elements called vision, a vivid image of one’s future self, can be sustainable in such a long period. This has resulted in the difficulty for teachers to create motivational currents among their learners. This article aims at contributing to the understanding of the dynamic nature of vision in the phenomena of motivational currents. It reports on a Retrodictive Qualitative Modelling (RQM) study conducted using complex dynamic system’s frame. The data were gathered from Indonesian postgraduate students studying in a university in the United Kingdom using introspective, semi-structured interview and self-assessed motivational trajectory. They were then analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings show that the participants experienced motivational currents although their visions or images of their future selves were slightly changing during the period. The findings will then be discussed with regards to the nature of interconnectedness between the motivational currents system and the self-system. The article is ended by outlining some pedagogical implications as well as recommendations for future research.Keywords: Motivational currents; vision; complex dynamic system.

Abstract

This research paper aims to explore a potential model for speaking through which consists of: a) strategies of using art as a medium for learning English; b) challenges to use art as a medium for learning English. This qualitative case study uses semi-structured interviews and observation in three schools of South Sulawesi. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis approach. The findings show that there were four strategies of using art as a medium for learning English, namely: a) using art to learn vocabulary; b) using art to learn grammar; c) employing art as a medium for learning process simple writing and; d) using art as a medium for speaking. In addition, the challenges they face include linguistic and practical challenges. The findings of this study extend the debates of learning English through art media. The implication of this study is that using art as a medium for learning English can be a model for EFL in similar contexts.

Abstract

This research aims to developing the educational game tool (word tree) to improve reading ability of early childhood. This is research used Borg & Gall model and has been modified with six steps, they are potential and problem, data collection, product design, design validation, resign revision, and usage trial. The subject is 5-6 years old children in RA Babul Ilmi Rantauparapat. The instrument used is validation questionnaire sheet. Data analysis technique is formulation of mean score percentage and gain score. The research result showed that: (1) the development of educational game too (word tree) is very worthy to be used to improve reading children of 5-6 years old children; and (2) educational game tool (word tree) developed has high level of effectiveness in improving reading ability of 5-6 years old children. This research suggest to the readers, teachers and other researchers to be creative and innovative in designing learning activity, which one of them is developing the product giving real contribution for their students’ ability. This research developed educational game tool in form of word tree that did not only improve children’s reading ability but also create happiness to learn.

Abstract

Digital literacy is a critical element of multiliteracy framework required to thrive in digital era and perceived as cross-curricular competencies, yet it is not adequately addressed in English language teaching. This paper explores the traits of the authentic academic digital practices in the course outlines of English language skills conducive for digital literacy development, examines the extent to which digital literacy are infused in the authentic academic digital practices of the English courses and proposes the procedure of infusing digital literacy in the authentic academic digital practices of English language teaching. The study employs content analysis to address the data—the traits of authentic academic digital practices in fifty-five course outlines of English language skills subjects from six English Language Education and English Literature Study Programs in Jakarta and West Java. The findings recognize the traits of authentic academic digital practices in the digital academic products, such as the answers to open-/closed-ended questions, essays, presentation slides, papers, videos, podcasts, recorded audio-visual presentations, and reports diversely used across the courses. These digital academic products are used merely as the media in which English is used; only English proficiency is highlighted. The underpinning digital competencies to create the media, the media creation process and the media as digital academic products are not sufficiently addressed and measured. Digital literacy is infused in the authentic academic digital practices of English language teaching through five stages of identifying the components of digital literacies and the authentic academic digital practices and products, analysing the descriptors of digital literacies components pertaining to authentic academic digital practices and products, integrating the descriptors of digital literacies into learning outcomes, embedding digital literacies into academic products, employing authentic academic digital practices in the learning process, and assessing digital literacies as cross-curricular competencies
