THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKING GRAMMAR (STRUCTURES) IV COURSE AT ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF TARBIYAH FACULTY ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2012/2013 Asfihana, Raida

The studentsâ needs of English have been a never ending issue for recent years. It is always be an interesting topic to be discussed as well as investigated through a series of research. This following research report is a description of the studentsâ need of taking Grammar IV course at TarbiyahÂ Faculty of IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin. The students were asked to fill in a questionnaire dealing with their needs of taking that course. The result shows that they think that grammar mastery is important for them and they prefer to do much practice on TOEFL exercise (the section of Structures and`Written Expression) through this course.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has been a current trend in language teaching for years. The ESP principles take part in the process of designing a syllabus or developing a teaching material for a particular course or study. Traditionally ESP courses were typically designed for intermediate or advanced adult learners. Nowadays many students can start to learn academic or vocational English at an earlier age and at a lower level of proficiency. A needs analysis, which is a part of ESPâs principles, is applied in order to find the needs of the courseâs participants. This paper comprises three parts; the nature of ESP, the needs analysis in ESP, and ESP in EFL context.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ENGLISH TEACHING PRACTICUM AT AL ISTIQAMAH BOARDING SCHOOL BANJARMASIN Asfihana, Raida

Language teachers are expected not only learn the theoretical knowledge such as grammar, linguistics, teaching methodology, curriculum, or assessment but also the practical knowledge on how to apply those theories in teaching. As candidate teachers, students from Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training need to feel the benefits of teaching practicum. The main purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of teaching practicum conducted by English Department students at Al IstiqamahÂ boarding school Banjarmasin in the academic year of 2013/2014. Next, it focuses on the studentsâ perception of teaching practicum, the role of mentor teachers at school, and the benefits they gained as well as the constraints that they faced during the two-month period of teaching practicum. This qualitative research takes 5 students teacher as the participants, respectively 2 students at MA and 3 students at MTs Al Istiqamah. The findings reveal that despite multiple challenges faced during teaching practicum, student teachers have positive perception towards the practice as they could learn how to adapt to various classroom situations. Student teachers tried to implement the theoretical knowledge from the coursework of English Department such as how to use appropriate media and apply various techniques in teaching. However, there are someÂ constraints such as language skills, student behavior, limited school facilities, and lack of support from mentor teacher.

Project-based learning is a learner-centered process that gives freedom to the students to design their own project works. Though numerous research results on the enactment of Project-Based Learning instruction have already been reported, only a limited number has reported its enactment in an online classroom situation. This present research, employed Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), unpacks the students’ learning experience after being exposed to Virtual Project-Based Learning, henceforth Virtual PBL. The researchers administered in-depth interviews to eighteen students who came from two different classes in an Islamic Higher Education in Indonesia. Findings show that five major themes emerged from data collection and analysis; increase active participation and motivation, develop critical thinking skills, participate in collaborative group discussion, build peer and lecturer communication, and develop skills in using digital tools. This result contributes to the earlier studies dealing with students’ learning experience of Virtual PBL instruction. It also adds the pedagogical implications to the research related to Virtual PBL enactment in Islamic higher education setting.
