Abstract

Water-resource sustainability requires management that integrates physical conditions with historical and socio-cultural dimensions. This study analyzes the spatial characteristics, historical development, and community phenomenology supporting the conservation of Jolotundo Spring. A concurrent mixed-methods design combined pH, TDS, topographic, and vegetation measurements at eight observation points with spatial analysis, field observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with six informants. The main Jolotundo points recorded TDS values of 46–54 ppm, pH values of 6.45–7.45, dense vegetation dominated by bamboo and banyan, and steep-slope topography. Historically and phenomenologically, sacred values and community experiences have shaped culture-based conservation practices. Jolotundo should therefore be managed through an integrated ecological, historical, and participatory approach.

Abstract

The rationale behind this study lies in students’ spatial reasoning capabilities and highlights the significance of selecting appropriate approaches and utilising geospatial technology in the context of geography teaching, particularly in relation to the subject matter of lithospheric dynamics. Consequently, this study focuses on analysing the impact of implementing a scientific approach supported by the use of Google Earth to develop students’ critical thinking skills. Two non-equivalent control groups were involved in this quasi-experimental study, namely the control group and the experimental group, each comprising 36 Year 10 pupils from SMAN 2 Lamongan. The techniques used to collect research data comprised documentation, observation and spatial reasoning (post-test and pre-test), with the data obtained analysed using the N-gain, z-test and descriptive statistics. According to the N-gain test, a significant difference was found, with the control group achieving lower post-test scores than the experimental group. Furthermore, the hypothesis test revealed a significant difference between the two groups, with the calculated Z-value exceeding the critical Z-value (8.41 > 1.96). This indicates that a learning model utilising Google Earth, based on geospatial technology and a scientific approach, can significantly enhance pupils’ thinking skills, as this model fosters a contextual, interactive and meaningful learning environment, particularly in understanding the dynamics of the lithosphere. Consequently, a learning model utilising Google Earth can motivate pupils to think spatially, particularly in the subject of geography.

Abstract

Sebambangan is a traditional marriage practice of the Pepadun and Saibatin Lampung communities carried out based on mutual agreement between the couple, while still involving family deliberation and customary leaders. As a form of local wisdom tied to the cultural landscape and geographical condition of West Lampung, the sustainability of this tradition is also shaped by the region's topography, accessibility, and intergenerational mobility patterns. This study aims to analyze intergenerational perceptions of the sebambangan practice in Sukau District, its implementation process, causal factors, and impacts, viewed from a cultural-geography perspective. A qualitative case study method was used through semi-structured interviews and documentation. Fifteen informants were purposively selected from four generational cohorts (Baby Boomers, X, Y, Z) until data saturation was reached. The results show that Baby Boomers and Generation X accept sebambangan as a reasonable cultural heritage of their time, Generation Y is selective and pragmatic, while Generation Z largely rejects the practice and prefers open marriages that are religiously and legally valid. Sebambangan persists due to mutual consent without parental approval, economic constraints, relatively isolated geographic conditions, and the mobility of younger generations. The tradition carries social, legal, and cultural implications that must be understood to keep it aligned with prevailing customary values and norms.
