Abstract

Anemia among adolescents in Indonesia has increased since 2007 until now, as well as worldwide. Anemia had affected their growth and development, along with cognitive abilities, making them susceptible to infectious diseases. Cognitive ability is closely related to the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of adolescents as internal factors. This study was an introductory study in the development of nutrition education based on local wisdom for adolescents with anemia as early prevention. A qualitative study was conducted in October 2020 in Cirebon District, West Java. The participants consisted of 10 people (eight stakeholders and two experts). Data were collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with instruments as a guide in collecting information data. Data were recorded with the subject's consent, transcribed word for word, and analyzed based on the listed theme by the researcher. Results from the survey stated that using digital development 4,0 learning models will be applied through blended learning and integrated into students' extracurricular activities, using a variety of learning methods and media according to adolescents' development. Thus, this study involved various government sectors to apply the nutrition education model in schools through government policies. Furthermore, it may become a preventive measure for adolescents with anemia.

Abstract

Nutritional status is an important indicator of college student health. College students are included in the age group vulnerable to nutritional problems such as decreased diet quality and excessive weight. The study aims to determine the relationship between body image, mindful eating, and weight loss diet behavior with nutritional status in female college students. The study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted among female students at Esa Unggul University in 2022. A total of 122 subjects were selected using the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling method. Nutritional status is measured by assessing Body Mass Index (BMI). The instruments used were the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) to assess body image, the Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ) to assess mindful eating, and the dietary behavior questionnaire to assess weight loss. Data were analyzed by chi-square test at CI:95%. The results showed that body image was related to thin (p= 0,004) and obese (p= 0,000) nutritional status. Dietary behavior for weight loss is associated with thin nutritional status (p= 0,010) but not with obesity (p= 0,389). In conclusion, nutritional status (BMI) is related to body image and weight loss diet behavior in female college students.

Abstract

Jamblang fruits (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) have the potential as an antioxidant by facilitating glucose and lipid metabolism for reducing the atherogenic index (AI). This study aimed to explore the effect of the Jamblang extract on the atherogenic index in a diabetic rat model. This pre- and post-control group design study was conducted in the Pharmacology Laboratory of Universitas Sumatera Utara. Twenty-five rats were divided into five groups. Alloxan 120 mg/kg BW was administrated intraperitoneally, and the rats' fasting blood glucose levels were measured four days later. Group I (negative control) were treated with aqua dest, group II (positive control) was treated with glibenclamide 1,25 mg /kg BW, and group III, IV, and V were given an extract of Jamblang at a dose of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg BW for seven days. Trigliserida and HDL-C measured using spektrofotometer microlab. The data were subjected to the Kruskal-Wallis test to examine the effect of Jamblang extract in different doses on the atherogenic index, followed by a Mann- Whitney Post hoc test. The result revealed that the extract Jamblang dose of 125, 250, and 500 mg/kg BW significantly decreased the atherogenic index (p value= 0,012<0,05). In conclusion, the Jamblang (Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels) with the best-tested dose was 500 mg/kgBW to decrease the atherogenic index until 0,42 in vivo study.

Abstract

Age at menarche is strongly associated with adolescents' nutritional status. Food insecurity is one of the factors that cause nutritional disorders. Communities living in areas of armed conflict often experience food insecurity and low levels of parental knowledge, leading to being underweight and stunting. Aceh had been plagued by armed conflict for almost three decades, which ended 23 years ago. This study aimed to measure the relationship between menarche and the nutritional status of adolescents in Aceh Besar, Aceh Province. This analytical research method used a cross-sectional survey approach. The sample consisted of 278 Junior High School (JHS) students, taken by stratified random sampling at ten of the JHS in Aceh Besar in 2021-2022. Data were collected through interviews, using questionnaires, anthropometric measurements (Weight and Height), and observations. Statistical analysis used the Chi-square test at CI 95%. 79,1% of the students' menarche was normal, and 64,7% had normal nutritional status. There was a significant relationship between age at menarche and nutritional status (p<0,05). In conclusion, menarche's age is related to adolescent girls' nutritional status at Junior High School in Aceh Besar.

Abstract

Preeclampsia (PE) is a health problem that often occurs during pregnancy. Pregnant women with preeclampsia are at risk for premature delivery, babies born with LBW, and increased maternal and infant mortality. This study aimed to measure the effect of physical activity and iron and folic acid intake on the risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Tangerang Regency in July 2022. 130 pregnant women aged ≥ 20 weeks were obtained using multistage sampling. Data were collected using the SQ-FFQ (the Semi-quantitative Food Frequency) Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and Physical Activity using a validated PAL (physical activity level) questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using Spearman’s rank and Multiple Linear Regression tests. Results: There was an association between iron and folic acid micronutrient intake and preeclampsia incidence in pregnant women (p<0,05). Furthermore, simultaneous physical activity and iron and folic acid intake increased the risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women (p<0,05) by 10,7%. In conclusion, lack of physical activity and consumption of nutritious foods, especially those containing iron and folic acid, can increase the risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy.
