Abstract

Obesity is a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition that occurs in the White Adipose Tissue (WAT). Diet is the strongest factor regulating energy balance and influencing inflammatory responses in the body. This inflammatory response can be calculated using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). The aim of this research was to determine the differences between DII values for obese and non-obese people in the work area of the Sumbersari Public Health Center, Jember Regency, which was carried out from May to June 2023. This was a cross-sectional study with sample selection through a simple random sampling method. Thirty participants were included in each group. Data collection was carried out using the Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and the data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The normality test was performed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and the data were normally distributed. The results obtained that There was a significant difference (p=0,000) between the DII values of the normal and obese groups. It is known that the average DII value in the normal group was +2,29 and in the obese group was +1,32, indicating that the normal group had a higher pro-inflammatory diet than the obesity group. In conclusion, there was a significant difference between the DII values in obese and non-obese groups in the working area of the Sumbersari Community Health Center, Jember Regency.

Abstract

Normal-weight central obesity (NWCO) has a significant effect on Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and mortality, which are modulated by comorbidities. This systematic review aimed to identify comorbid diseases associated with NWCO. Search for articles published in 2013-2023 using the PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus databases. Articles were selected based on the inclusion criteria, specifically articles about the relationship between NWCO and comorbid diseases, using English language, observational study design, and can be accessed in full text. Each article was assessed based on sample size, study design, response rate, outcome measurement, statistical analysis, confounding factors, ethics, and research limitations. The results of this study show that NWCO increases the risk of comorbid diseases such as hypertension, CVD, Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Metabolic Syndrome (MS), dyslipidemia, stroke, and hyperuricemia. Hypertension, MS, and dyslipidemia play a role in the incidence of CVD and DM. This study can increase awareness and attention to groups with normal body weights to improve lifestyle, routine health screening, and immediate intervention to prevent comorbid diseases.

Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide problem, particularly in Indonesia. Obesity and impaired glucose metabolism have an impact on vitamin D status in women with polycystic ovarium syndrome and are still controversial.  This study aimed  to examine vitamin D levels and the correlation between obesity and impaired glucose metabolism in PCOS patients. This research employed analytical observational techniques with a case-control approach with 40 women diagnosed with Rotterdam Criteria PCOS in Mother and Child Hospital Kasih Ibu Tegal during September-October 2023. This study used the Chemiluminescent Mikropartikel Immunoassay (CMIA) method to measure vitamin D levels in the laboratory. The statistical test utilized were Shapiro-Wilk, Paired T-Test and Mann Whitney and Chi Square. Results: There was no significant difference in the serum 25(OH)D levels between women with PCOS and controls (p>0,05; p=0,745). The group of patients with an obese waist circumference was 9.75 times more likely to develop PCOS than the group with a normal waist circumference (OR = 9,75; 95% CI = 1,16-82,11; p = 0,013). In conclusion, there was no substantial variation in vitamin D levels between PCOS and non-PCOS patients. Vitamin D deficiency correlates with obesity but does not correlate with impaired glucose metabolism.

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (age >15 years) is 1,8% and is increasing every year in Indonesia. Jali seeds (Coix lacryma-jobi L) are known to contain good dietary fiber for people with DM. One of the processed foods from jali seeds is tape. Therefore, tape jali can be used as an alternative snack food for patients with DM. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fermentation time on the food fiber content, total sugar content, and organoleptic quality of jali tapes. This study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method. The organoleptic test was carried out in May 2023 by 30 semi-trained panelists from the Nutrition students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Muhammadiyah University, Jakarta. Tests for food fiber content and total sugar content were carried out at the PT Saraswanti Indo Genetech laboratory with one control factor, three treatments (48, 72, and 96 h fermentation), and five replications. Organoleptic tests included hedonic quality and liking (hedonic) tests using the questionnaire method, food fiber content tests using the enzymatic-gravimetric method, and total sugar content tests using the Luff Schoorl method. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used for data analysis. The results showed that there were differences in each sample for the quality of aroma, sour taste, sweetness, and texture (p <0,05), and the sample that was most liked by the panelists was TJ2. Laboratory test results showed that the sample with the highest fiber content and lowest total sugar content was TJ2, at 5,72% and 19,1%, respectively. In conclusion, fermentation time has an effect on the dietary fiber content, total sugar content, and organoleptic quality of jali tape.

Abstract

Many adolescents in developing countries have a poor breakfast habit. Poor nutritional status is thought to occur due to poor breakfast habits. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between breakfast habits and nutritional status in female adolescents using the BAZ approach. This was an observational study that used a cross-sectional approach. Three hundred and thirty-six (366) participants were selected from seven State Junior High Schools in Tasikmalaya using the proportional random sampling method. This study was conducted between August and October 2023. Nutritional status was measured using the body mass index-age-Z score (BAZ), and breakfast habits were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Multiple linear regression modeling with a significance of p<0,05 was used for data analysis. From 366 participants, the average frequency of breakfast was 3,4 ± 2,5 times/weeks, with an average BAZ of -0,08 ± 1,2 SD. Breakfast habits were related to nutritional status using BAZ (p=0,031. This study concluded that the frequency of breakfast consumption in a week is negatively related to nutritional status based on BAZ in female adolescents. Therefore, they need to be encouraged to eat breakfast and determine the reasons why they skip breakfast.

Abstract

Patients treated with intensive care are at risk of malnutrition. Enteral nutrition can help to maintain a patient's nutritional needs and digestive system function. However, some complications are associated with enteral feeding, including aspiration and refeeding syndromes. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the effects of enteral feeding methods in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients. Related literature was systematically retrieved from 2019 to 2023 using the ProQuest, PubMed, Clinical Key, Science Direct, and Cochrane Library databases. Specific keyword combinations were applied when searching only for randomized controlled trials (RCT) on enteral feeding in critically ill patients. The results of this study found six articles were selected after screening based on the inclusion criteria. The continuous feeding method was found to improve the achievement of the target nutritional requirements and reduce the risk of aspiration. However, it is not always appropriate to consider circadian rhythm. In conclusion, there are important clinical factors to be considered before selecting the type of enteral access, including the patient’s clinical condition, surgical history, length of anticipated feeding time, and potential risks.
