Abstract

It is necessary to know physical and non-physical aspect of the megalithic remains at Nias to comprehend its significance. Recognizing Nias’ physical aspects does not directly grasp the essence of its megalithic culture and describe the people who once built the remnants. Therefore, it is necessary to understand its non physical aspect, such as names and titles of nobility of Nias community, because it is important part of their culture and act as symbol of characteristic, kinship, social standing and culture territory. This article discusses the importance of understanding the names and titles or nobility to futher explain the significance of megalithic remains in Nias.

Abstract

The core of archaeological research is excavation, a destructive and unrepeatabl method employed to collect data buried underground. Today, there is a device which can reduce excavation failure and harmful impact upon archaeological date i.e. ground penetrating radar (GPR). Many archaeological research carried out abroad have been using the GPR, since it is considered one of the most effective methods to identify the condition beneath the ground before starting an excavation. Unfotunately, it is still infrequently employed in archaeological research in Indonesia. This article discussed the benefing of GPR methos for archaeological research and excavation in Indonesia.

Abstract

Ecology an area will have an effect on to cultural character of society occupying it. Related to assumption, emerge a problems concerning difference of cultural character of society inhabiting DAS Barito start from upstream go downstream. Distribution analysis or archaeology remain distribution expected will assist in depiction of archaeology data distributions pattern in linear area. Pursuant to result of the analysis hence seeing that to be are cultural character dichotomy from among society upriver and downstream of DAS Barito of difference of ecology.

Abstract

Ships of wood are one of the many water transportations which suffer the cultural-economic impact on the use of vessels. Despite it capability to cross the vast oceans and face the change of time, its existence depends on human’s decision to continuously preserve its cultural identity or completely replace wooden ships with modern ones. Nevertheless, such traditional vessels still can be seen even among the modern society. This article discusses the utilizing of wooden ships for sailing the ocean and its existence through time changes.

Abstract

A long house is a traditional communal house, which is occupied by a number of Dayak families. Such house usually accomodates traditional ceremonies sush as marriage, mortuary and other traditional gatherings. Today, most of the long houses are abandoned and deteriorate, and what is left is mere symbol of old custom which is also gradually dimishing. This article discusses the archaeological and sociological perspective on factors causing of the degrading existence and function of long houses of the Dayak in Kutai Barat.

Abstract

Padang Lawas is a temple complex of 1.500 km square meter in width and consists of at least 20 biaro. Most of the temples lie in jurisdiction of Kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan and others are in Kabupaten Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra. The general structures of Padang Lawas temples are of bricks, however, other components are sandstone. Sandstone is commonly found in Gunung Tua, which is assumed to be the resource of temple materials. Besides its proximity to raw materials, the site was chosen due to its geographical position close to Barumun and Pane River; such position accelerated communicaton with the outside world, for instance Barus, a well-known international port. This article discusses whether natural resources played significant role in choosing a prospective temple or settlement site.

Abstract

Archaeological and historical data discovered in the eastern part of Kalimantan and western Sulawesi indicates strong relationship between both regions, which dates back to the prehistoric period and flourished until today. Archaeological remains indicated Sulawesi to have more dominant influnces to that of Kalimantan. This article discusses the influnces of Sulawesi to cultural society at the Kalimantan region, also cultural continuity based on archaeological remains from both region.

Abstract

In the early Anno Dominium, Chinese armadas were supported by high technology Jung to travel through the seas, to conquer and monopolize trade in the Southeast Asia. Chinese Jung also reached South Asia and Afrika either to sell or seek for goods. Nevertheless, there is no significant evidence to confirm that Chinese Jung were built and navigated by the Chinese. A number of archaeological finds and Chinese chronicles indicate that they used Jung originally came from Kunlun (Indonesian Archipelago). The journals also stated that Nusantara Jung had made voyages until Madagascar and were used by the Chinese and Persian for trade. This article discusses the contribute of Nusantara Jung in maritime voyaging in the ealy Anno Dominium

Abstract

Bahasa merupakan salah satu indicator yang dapat menentukan keterkaitan antarperadaban yang ditemukan di wilayah geografis yang berbeda. Salah satu bahsa antarperadaban yang digunakan secara luas sejak masa prasejarah sampai saat ini oleh penduduk di Nusantara dan Oseania adalah Bahasa Austronesia. Studi tentang persebaran Bahasa Austronesia memungkinkan kita untuk mempelajari gerak perpindahan manusia penutur Bahasa Austronesia dari Asia Daratan kea rah selatan melalui Taiwan, Filipina termasuk wilayah Indonesia bagian timur. Pergerakan bangsa penutur Bahasa Austronesia ini lah yang diduga yang membawa budaya ‘sawah’ ke Nusantara dan beberapa artefak yang berasosiasi dengan ‘sawah’. Tulisan ini akan membahas data arkeologis pasca 3.000 Sebelum Masehi di Taiwan, Filipina, dan Indonesia bagian timur.

Abstract

Site catchment analysis in archaeology stresses on the examination of the relationship between human and its natural environment. This analysis performed based on the assumption that the benefiting of natural resource surrounds a settlement shows different distance from one to the other and that sites location will be in minimum distance to the resource. This article discuss a site catchment analysis employed to identify sites range and location of natural resource commonly exploited by cave dwellers in Dander, Bojonegoro.
