Abstract

Purpose – Moral degradation continues to persist in Indonesia, with various cases of violence and conflicts occurring from early childhood to adolescence. The low foundation of character education is a major issue, especially in early childhood education. This research aims to analyze Bangkalan fairy tales in preserving Madura's local wisdom. Design/methods/approach – The research method employed is qualitative research, utilizing data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consist of cultural figures in Bangkalan and the folktales from Bangkalan. Data analysis in this research employs thematic analysis with validity testing through source triangulation and technique triangulation. Findings – The findings of this research reveal that the local wisdom embedded in Bangkalan's folktales emphasizes the early cultivation of character traits. These character traits include respect for elders, adherence to religious practices, honesty, and empathy towards others. The research findings provide an alternative approach to instilling local wisdom in early childhood as a foundational framework for children in coping with technological advancements. Research implications/limitations – This research is limited to the analysis of fairy tales intended for early childhood as a means to preserve local wisdom from an early age. Additionally, the research is confined to the cultural context of Bangkalan and may not be applicable to other regions. Future studies could explore similar analyses in different cultural contexts to provide a broader understanding of how fairy tales can preserve local wisdom across various societies. Practical implications – This research provides implications in the form of practices of struggle and nurturing through fairy tales in Bangkalan. It demonstrates how these tales can be used as practical tools for teaching young children about resilience and care, instilling important cultural values from an early age. Originality/value – This research provides positive value for young children by preserving the values of struggle found in Bangkalan fairy tales, contributing to the cultural education and heritage of Madura. By integrating these tales into early childhood education, it helps foster a sense of cultural identity and continuity among the younger generation. Paper type Case study

Abstract

Purpose – Educational institutions play a crucial role in addressing environmental problems through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for early childhood. This research aims to identify effective methods for implementing sustainable education goals in environmental learning for young children by developing an environmental learning model. Design/methods/approach – This research and development study utilized Borg & Gall's development model, simplified for efficiency in terms of energy, time, and cost. The study focused on the validation stage, with testing and dissemination planned for subsequent research. The product was designed based on an initial needs analysis. Currently, environmental learning is limited to cognitive abilities only, lacking additional skills or habits imparted to the children. The product was validated through a Forum Discussion Group with Jakarta Bisa School and Gaharu Nature School in Bandung. Findings – Validation results indicate that environmental education can begin with character development in children. Jakarta Bisa School can implement the Green Attitude, which embodies values such as Life, Love, Responsibility, the Universe, and Sustainability. Additionally, learning should involve more direct experiences, allowing children to observe the natural life cycle, environmental care, and the sustainability of natural resources. Research implications/limitations – This research requires an extended period for designing and implementing the environmental learning model. By involving multiple stakeholders, it has the potential to change teachers' and parents' perceptions in educating early childhood. Practical implications – Environmental learning is essential for fostering future change. Children will grow with a strong understanding of the importance of love and care for the universe and a sense of responsibility for life within it. This approach helps cultivate environmentally conscious individuals who are equipped to address global challenges and contribute to a sustainable future. Originality/value – This research contributes to the field of education by promoting a better future through learning aligned with ESD goals. It provides innovative teaching methods and materials that foster environmental awareness and sustainability from an early age. Paper type Research Paper

Abstract

Purpose – To assess the proportion of Health Care Providers (HCPs) in Sokoto practicing Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in their various health facilities and identify barriers to KMC practice among HCPs in Sokoto. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the extent of KMC adoption and uncover the obstacles that hinder its effective implementation. Design/methods/approach – A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 80 Health Care Providers (HCPs) who attended the World Prematurity Day celebration in 2022. The program was held at the Medical and Health Workers Union office, Tamaje, Sokoto, on December 2, 2022. A structured questionnaire comprising both open and close-ended questions was used. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Findings – The mean age of the HCPs was 32.9±7.6 years, with the majority, 30 (37.5%), having less than five years of working experience. Of the 80 respondents, 41 (51.3%) were nurses, 9 (11.2%) were doctors, and 16 (20.0%) were midwives. Forty-three (53.7%) of the HCPs practiced KMC. The most common barriers to implementing KMC among the HCPs were lack of privacy for the mothers (23, 28.8%), lack of space for the mothers (21, 26.3%), cultural reasons (19, 23.8%), and lack of skills on KMC (16, 20.0%). The factors associated with the practice of KMC were previous training on KMC and working in tertiary hospitals (p<0.05). Research implications/limitations – This research implies that to mitigate barriers to KMC practice in hospitals, HCPs need to be trained to acquire skills for KMC, and rooms for KMC that ensure privacy for mothers should be available in health facilities. Practical implications –By identifying and addressing the barriers to KMC, such as lack of privacy, space, and skills, health facilities can improve the adoption and effectiveness of KMC practices. Originality/value – Kangaroo Mother Care reduces morbidity and mortality in Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants, making it crucial for countries with scarce resources to adopt this practice. Healthcare providers play a vital role in educating, supporting, and assisting mothers to practice KMC in the hospital and continue it at home after discharge. Paper type Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to investigate the strategies employed by kindergarten teachers and parents in preparing children's school readiness in the Batang Angkola District, considering the local context and related social dynamics. Design/methods/approach – Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, the research combines a descriptive approach to outline existing phenomena with a qualitative approach to explore the meanings and interpretations of the strategies used. Data were collected through direct interviews with several kindergarten teachers and parent representatives in kindergartens and surrounding areas in the Batang Angkola District. Additionally, secondary data related to supporting theories on children's school readiness were utilized. Findings – The findings reveal that both kindergarten teachers and parents are not fully prepared for children's school readiness. This is evidenced by the non-alignment of teachers' educational backgrounds with early childhood education and the parents' primary focus on academic readiness, often neglecting other critical aspects such as social and emotional development. Furthermore, the strategies implemented by kindergarten teachers and parents fail to holistically address the needs of children during the transition process. Research implications/limitations – The study is limited to the Batang Angkola District and may not be generalizable to other regions. These findings highlight areas in educational practices that require improvement and suggest the need for further research to develop more effective strategies for holistic school readiness preparation. Practical implications – The insights gained from this study provide guidance for the development of more holistic and integrated school readiness preparation programs that can better support children during their transition to school. These programs should aim to balance academic learning with social, emotional, and physical development to ensure well-rounded preparedness. Originality/value – This research sheds light on the specific challenges faced by kindergarten teachers and parents in the Batang Angkola District, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to school readiness that includes academic, social, and emotional aspects. By addressing these challenges, the study contributes to the broader understanding of effective strategies for early childhood education in similar contexts. Paper type Case study
