Abstract

Choosing a career as an Early Childhood Education Teacher is both challenging and joyful. Not everyone is interested in this profession except for those who have strong motivation. This study aims to identify students’ exact motivation to select the Early Childhood Education Department at Public University. This study uses combined qualitative and quantitative methods (exploratory mixed methods design). Sources of qualitative data were taken from twenty informants through in-depth interviews and analyzed using NVivo 10 analysis software, while sources of quantitative data were taken from a hundred correspondents and analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Both qualitative and quantitative data analyses showed that students have seven motivations to select the Early Childhood Education Department. Those seven motivations are: i) parents encouragement (81%); ii) job opportunities after graduation (83%); iii) loving kids (85%); iv) teaching is a noble profession (100%); self-will (70%); vi) the choice to be a teacher (76%); and vii) Early Childhood Education is not difficult, but joyful (80%). The study has successfully revealed seven students’ motivations for selecting the Early Childhood Education Department at Public University. This study’s results can be used as preliminary data for subsequent researchers to examine this problem in different contexts and issues. This study’s findings need to be continued by the next researcher by examining the correlation between motivational aspects with various other variables. However, this data can also be used as an initial reference for examining the issues and problems in different contexts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the concept of Early Childhood Education offered by various educational figures to impact the emergence of increasingly dynamic educational theories. Issues on this concept did not escape the attention of Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi and Maria Montessori. The two figures have similarities and differences in their underlying points of view and approaches, and these cannot be separated from the philosophical study behind them. Based on the above, this study explores the two figures’ thoughts to give birth to a new paradigm of education for early childhood. The research method used was a literature study by collecting various references that can support research. From the research results, it can be found that, philosophically, the concept of Early Childhood Education, according to Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi, is attached to the perennial normative approach, while Maria Montessori’s notion is more towards a constructivism approach. The two approaches have different points of view in highlighting the educational side. The similarity in the points of view of these two figures is an understanding of the concept of education, which should be integrated and contextual, and position the child as the main subject in education.

Abstract

The curriculum is an absolute thing that must be owned by a teaching unit. The curriculum is the core of the learning process. Az-Zahwa Playgroup Trenggalek has five teachers with high-school educational background and has never received training or workshops. This condition has an impact on the course during the learning process. The learning process runs without a plan, and the activities taken during the learning process was not appropriate to the children's age. This research aims to describe the strategies in increasing teacher competence, especially in pedagogic and professionalism based on structured-mentoring. In this research, the structured-mentoring was conducted by providing alternately structured materials and practice using prepared learning-tools appropriate to curriculum 2013. This type of research was qualitative with a case-study design. The data were collected using observations, interviews, and documentation. This research's inhibiting factor was that the teachers have a high-school educational background and have not had teaching experience, resulting in a lack of knowledge and teaching skills. On the other hand, the supporting factor was that teachers were enthusiastic and creative in developing the learning tools based on local culture. The results achieved from this structured-monitoring research were the teachers were able to make the learning-tools start from PROTA, PROMES, RPPM, RPPH according to 2013 Curriculum based on local culture and ended by generating the score by using work-result oriented techniques, checklist, portfolio, and anecdotal notes.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze parenting and social support relationships by working single mothers on balanced nutritious feeding and early childhood nutritional status. This is quantitative research with a cross-sectional design. This research was conducted in the coastal area of the Probolinggo Regency, consisting of 16 sub-districts. The population in this study was 247 single mothers who worked and had 3-year-old children. The sampling technique of this research is simple random sampling. The final sample in this study was 219 people. A short questionnaire measured the sociodemographic data of research respondents (age, last education, and maternal work). Questionnaires measured data on parenting and social support variables. A food recall sheet measured data on balanced nutritious feeding variables to see the food the mother gave to her child within a month. Nutritional status variable data is recorded using the observation sheet. The data analysis technique in this study was logistic regression. The results showed a link between parenting and social support by single mothers who work with balanced nutritious feeding and early childhood nutritional status in coastal areas. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that health education is needed for mothers who have children in early childhood to help them solve the problems they experience when knowing their child is malnourished. Therefore, cross-sectoral cooperation is needed to provide sustainable health education.
