Abstract

In the comics with superhero genre, the reader will see a villain figure as the opponent of superhero. In September 2019, Bumilangit in collaboration with Gramedia Pustaka published the comic Gundala: Destiny as the complementary media adaptation to the movie Gundala: This Country Needs Patriots which was also published in the same year. This comic presents the figure of Sancaka against Pengkor. Unlike the movie, the main point of narration in the comic is from the perspective of Pengkor as the villain. The comic’s narrative shows the story of Pengkor's childhood until he became a mafia who is feared and respected by many people. With his power, Pengkor has both socially or politically dominance. His power also works with his 10 adopted children as the victims of his subordination. However, Pengkor’s actions to create power over his children were carried out without coercion and repression. In this way, his adopted children obeyed and glorified Pengkor with the nickname 'Father'. By using the structural theory of Tzvetan Todorov and the hegemony of power from Antonio Gramsci, this study aims to dismantle the ambivalent power attitude of Pengkor as the villain figure in the comic Gundala: Destiny.

Abstract

Explicit instruction of reading strategies has often been recommended to develop L2 or EFL learners with poor reading performance. This paper aims to examine how effective the approach is when it is combined with a diagnostic assessment tool, both on participants’ reading performance at literal and inferential levels, and participants’ attitudes towards reading. The experimental study involved two groups of 9 grade students in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara who were identified as low-level readers. The findings reveal that while both control and experimental groups made significant progress in their reading performance, the experimental group yielded larger effect size than the control group. It is concluded that the use of diagnostic assessment tool was proven to be instrumental in extending the participants’ reading performance. Classroom implications and suggestions for future research are provided based on the aforementioned findings.

Abstract

As a complex process, writing is always interesting to be discussed. One of the students' biggest problems in writing is in maintaining coherence. Coherence is a systemic model to unify some elements to become good writing. This article aims to identify the most cohesion type used by the students and factors that influence the unsuccessful coherence of the text. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained by collecting descriptive text written by thirteen English Diploma Program students. The unit of analysis in this study is a community –based tourism text which describes tourism villages in Banyumas Regency, Indonesia. The writers take Community-Based Tourism (CBT) as the unit of analysis because the government right now is developing CBT in many areas in Indonesia. As an important stakeholder, the University must prepare the students to write good descriptions of CBT. The result of this study shows most of the students use reference, reiteration, and conjunction in their writing but they have very minimal use of ellipsis, substitution, and collocation. The writers found that some of the students' sentences have successful integration, but some have not successful integration. There are several factors influence unsuccessful integration. Those are students' prior knowledge, inappropriate use of cohesive devices, and illogical sequence. Finally, we can conclude that the students need more guidance and knowledge of using effective writing, cohesive devices and logical sequence.
