Abstract

Learning English as a second language requires students to learn English skills and components, including grammar. English Department students, as second language learners, are required to have good grammar acquisition. However, they usually make errors related to grammatical rules. This study was aimed to identify and analyze some grammatical problems experienced by the English Department Students, Politeknik Negeri Jember. The research result is hoped to be beneficial not only for language learning and teaching, but also for linguistics studies. The data were taken from the students who enrolled Upper Intermediate Grammar Course. The students’ written works were analyzed to find the problems. The first step was reading the works carefully to find grammatical problems. Having identified the problems, the researcher wrote notes about error kinds. She classified the errors into different categories based on their kinds. Then, the researcher analyzed the data and counted using percentage calculation. This study found that the students made the grammatical problems mostly on sentence constructions, numbers, and tenses. Hopefully, the findings would be beneficial for English teachers to get information about grammatical mistakes frequently made by the students, analyze causes of grammatical errors, and find solution to deal with the problems. Abstract

This research aims at developing assessment specifications on the basis of European Profiling Grid (EPG) digital media enabling competences for undergraduate English education program. The data used in this research are digital media enabling competence in the syllabi of five universities in Indonesia and digital media enabling competence in EPG document. This research applies Design and Development following the procedures adapted from Nunamakers (1991). To develop assessment specifications, two sub-questions are applied. Finding of the first question is three universities have independent course that equip students with digital media enabling competences. They also insert this competence in other courses. Two universities do not have this competence at all in their courses. Finding of the second sub-question shows that the level of similarity of digital media enabling competences in the existing syllabi and in EPG perspective is very low. The data of level the similarity of digital media enabling competences in the existing syllabi and in EPG perspective then used by researcher to develop assessment specifications. There are 15 item and 9 topics covered in this assessment specification. The assessment is in the form of performance assessment. Keywords: EGP, digital media enabling competences, test specification

Abstract

This research is entitled “Negative Representation of Indonesian Female Workers in Hong Kong in Two Articles of South China Morning Post.” This research aims to analyze the elements used by South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong daily, in representing Indonesian female workers negatively on micro level in the macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure and to describe the negative representations attached to Indonesian female workers. The objects used in this research are two articles related to Indonesian female workers abuse case in Hong Kong from the news media South China Morning Post published on February 2015. This research is a descriptive-qualitative research using critical discourse analysis method of Teun A. van Dijk, which focuses on micro-level analysis. The result of this research shows that Indonesian female workers are represented negatively in macrostructure through the discourse elements of headline and lead, in superstructure through the discourse elements of verbal reactions, main events, and background, and in microstructure through the discourse elements of level of specificity and degree of completeness, implications, presuppositions, and lexical style. They are represented as less educated, weak, and labile figures in the two articles of South China Morning Post. Abstract

This research aims to study the use of Interactive Metadiscourse in Abstract Section of English Linguistics Reseach Articles. This reseach will use metadiscourse theory from Hyland (2005) which devide metadiscourse into two, they are textual and interpersonal metadiscourse, while interactive metadiscourse is part of interpersonal metadiscourse. This research also aims to find the frequentative forms of interactive metadiscourse and describe the function of each category of interactive metadiscourse. The findings showed that there are just three sub category of interactive metadiscourse found in 15 abstracts, they are frame markers, code glosses and trasition markers. The highest markers that is found in this reseach is the transtion markers with the word “and” which are appeared 84 times in 15 abstracts.

Abstract

The growth and development of information and technology has greatly improve for learning language, especially English. The aim of this study is to explored the potentials and the challenges of implementing technologies for learning English. Qualitative descriptive design was applied. Observation and interview were implemented to collect the data. This study was conducted at Universitas Fajar, Architecture Department. There were ten students were involved in this research. They were selected based on the purposive sampling. The result of this study depicted that applying technologies (e-learning and online application) have two main potentials and one challenges in regards for the implementation of technologies in learning English.

Abstract

Technology literacy is a must for living in Industry 4.0 includes English teachers who face millennial students. This study investigated the dispositions of in-service English teachers namely beliefs, enthusiasms, commitments, attitudes, initiatives, responsiveness, strong work ethics, open-mindedness, patience, lifelong learners, adaptations, collaborations, proactive, and reflections towards improving pedagogical competence by applying technology literacy during the PPG workshop especially during constructing lesson plan, simulation, and teaching practice at school. This is a case study of descriptive qualitative research which was conducted at Teacher Education Program (PPG) of Tanjungpura University in Pontianak in 2019. 47 in-service English teachers who were participating in this program were the subject of this study. Data were collected through the distribution of a questionnaire and in-depth interview, as well as classroom observation. Based on the result of data analysis, most of in-service English teachers (88.80%) have positive dispositions towards applying technology literacy. They showed their beliefs,enthusiasms, commitments, attitudes, initiatives, responsiveness, strong work ethics, open-mindedness, patience, lifelong learners, adaptations, collaborations, proactive, and reflections. Almost all of teachers (93,61-100%) had experiences to use technology to develop their pedagogical competence such as selecting techniques for teaching language skills, developing teaching materials, and selecting teaching media. Most of in-service English teachers (80-82%) had skills to use images/pictures, video, you tube. Factors such as digital literacy, infrastructure for internet access are needed by the teachers to use technology to improve their pedagogical competence.

Abstract

Teachers’ language is one of the important aspects that contributes on students’ competence in any levels. It promotes students’ engagement in the learning process and also effects students’ output of their learning. It doesn’t prevail only on kindergarten students or primary students, but also on higher level such as college or university level. This research is aimed at determining the use of positive language to promote students’ writing competence in university level. The focus of the research is on writing competence where students face terribly writing difficulties. Engaged by the 3rd semester of 41 students of Basic Writing class in English Education Program, the research was measured statistically in a correlational analysis. Findings show that there is a significant correlation between the use of positive language and the result of the students’ writing competence. Most students show that they need positive language applied in their classrooms, so that they would fully participate in the learning process. Further, the students can reach their best results of their learning and gain their highest competence. Instead of vanish, language as a powerful teaching tool would be demanded by all levels of students for centuries.

Abstract

The proposed study intended to investigate the different types of errors in academic writing performed by 20 English Foreign Language (EFL) Learners undertaking English for Academic Writing at English study program (ESP) University of Timor Indonesia. The learners were required to write a one page term paper assignment on a topic related to their hometown. The descriptive qualitative method was employed to examine and analyse the students’ term papers and interview. The analysis document became the primary source supported by the interview sections as references for the secondary sources. The errors in the term papers were identified and classified accordingly. The whole primary data were classified based on the types of errors, and they were explained. The result of the present study revealed that the errors majority carried out by the EFL learners due to the grammatical errors or sentences structure. Then, it followed by determiners, using capital letters, articles, and punctuation as the minor errors. The findings of this research were expected to provide the EFL learners positive input in learning English as a foreign language specifically in academic writing. Abstract

The Post Corona World has automatically brought about new conditions in language learning and instruction. The impacts and consequences of the pandemic on ELT would make part of the paper at hand. Some conceptual issues would accordingly be part and parcel of the propositions discussed throughout the initial part of this short paper. On the latter part, the paper discusses the viewpoints of some 49 participants sought through the final run of the modified questionnaire, among other means, developed and administered to the students of online classes to see how they feel about the rest of the process. Positive as well as negative points of online language instruction are categorically delineated to help enhance the instruction in prospect. The part which might have positively benefited most regarding the present circumstances is the material development domain by lowering the panic of the instructor in developing the material which might not only be much more appealing to the students but also help them enhance their language ability. Abstract

Abstract Ability to operate in English in today’s world is getting more important than ever before. Being capable of using English at workplace becomes influencing factors in fulfilling duties (Clement & Murugavel, 2018). For school teachers, they need to learn English to support careers and to improve personal and professional quality. In EFL context the teaching of English has employed various methods and strategies since long. However, success remains uncertain as these methods, even the latest one so called Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), have been unable to fulfil the needs of EFL learners. In response to this, Post Method is proposed to be an alternative. This paper is trying to examine the implementation of Brown’s 10 teaching Factors to a group of teachers learning English as a foreign language in accordance to the post Method pedagogical theory. Ten non-English teachers, 3 females and seven males, in one of the Indonesian private schools participated in this study. Interview, observation, and questionnaire were used as research instrument to collect data. The finding reveals that before the class commenced, most of the participants hardly understood teachers’ instruction, had poor confidence to speak, and were unable to speak or carry on simple exchange, quite similar to the level of Novice Low, the term coined from Brown (see Brown, 2007, p. 118). However, after 20 class meetings, the participants were able to understand and speak daily conversation, and their speaking confidence increased significantly. Such levels of proficiency very much resemble Novice High and Intermediate Low. This result, however, requires further investigation on the implementation and output of this new teaching concept in different and wider contexts of EFL learners.
