Abstract

The cliché “Learning is a social act” highlights the critical role of social interaction in the process of learning. However, in the wake of COVID-19 forced campus closures and the resultant remote teaching minimizes the opportunities for such interactions mainly because teachers and students are forced to stay in isolation in their homes and come together for a limited time on the computer screen only. To overcome this limitation, teaching and assessment interventions are needed to build a sense of community (SoC) and therefore optimize students learning. This paper focuses on one such intervention and its perceived benefits for students learning of the course contents in the context of an English for academic purposes course delivered at an international university campus in Tajikistan. The paper shares how conditions were created to build a SoC among the students and how it was beneficial for them. The paper has implications for practitioners as it shares a practical example of using social interaction for enhanced learning in an online environment and therefore may stimulate some further ideas for using community building for the enhanced achievement of the learning outcomes.

Abstract

Distance learning or education is a hot issue discussed by educators (McVay and Rockers, 2007). The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is introduced by the government and other stakeholders. The study investigates how the lecturers use the Learning Management System (LMS) in conducting a quality class. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. This approach is aimed at uncovering phenomena experienced by lecturers (Moleong, 2005). The researcher becomes a key instrument who cannot be delegated (Creswell, 1998; Sugiyono, 2005). The finding then is sufficiently reconstructed by keeping a natural setting, so the finding data can be depicted as the aims of the research are expected. The study was conducted at the English Literature Study Program, STBA Sebelas April Sumedang. In-depth interviews were performed with 5 (five) lecturers who are in charge of the main subject/course in the study program. The result is the use of LMS needs lecturers' creativity and a new mindset, then the course objective can be obtained and the student’s center paradigm is maintained. Pembelajaran atau Pendidikan Jarak Jauh (PJJ) menjadi perhatian utama para pendidik (McVay dan Rockers, 2007). Penggunaan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK) diperkenalkan oleh pemerintah dan pemangku kepentingan. Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana dosen menggunakan Learning Management System (LMS) dalam melaksanakan perkuliahan yang bermutu. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Pendekatan ini ditujukan untuk membuka fenomena yang dialami oleh dosen (Moleong, 2005). Peneliti menjadi instrumen kunci yang tidak dapat diwakilkan (Creswell, 1998; Sugiyono, 2005). Temuan penelitian kemudian direkonstruksi dengan cara mempertahankan situasi natural. Data temuan kemudian digambarkan sesuai dengan tujuan penelitian yang diharapkan. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Program Studi Sastra Inggris, STBA Sebelas April Sumedang. Wawancara mendalam dilakukan terhadap 5 (lima) dosen yang mengampu mata kuliah inti program studi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa penggunaan LMS mengharuskan kreativitas dan mindset baru para dosen, sehingga tujuan perkuliahan dapat tercapai dan paradigma belajar bertumpu pada mahasiswa dapat dilaksanakan.

Abstract

To reach one of its aims in producing graduates with national and international standard competency, Politeknik Negeri Bandung (Polban) assigns English Department to teach General English subject to all study program as one of institutional mandatory subject. However, since the pandemic hits in the beginning of 2020, distance learning has been applied as the solution to keep the education process runs well. This study aims to identify the stages in teaching General English for vocational university student as well as to explain the challenges during pandemic. Qualitative method is applied for this study and to collect the data, observation and survey are done by using online platform. The results show that stages in teaching are similar compared to the conventional one: preparation, delivery, and evaluation. Things that differ each stage are the teaching media and the duration used during the class. Some challenges arise as this pandemic ‘force’ all level of educational institution to adapt with distance learning: the reduction of study objectives, the ease of assessment method, and the feedback delivery of student’s assignment. Eventually, the urgency of improving English skills for all level of vocational students during this uncertain situation requires strong preparation and cooperation from the institution, lecturers, and students themselves.

Abstract

Running effective teaching-learning activities can be a challenge for English teachers due to the lack of understanding students’ needs. Therefore, knowing the students’ strengths and weaknesses is important in English class. This research aims at investigating the students’ needs related to the English materials through a diagnostic test. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by using a test that had been taken by 20 students who were in the second semester of eight grade at a Junior High School in one of Indonesia’s small cities. The result shows the English materials which are needed to be focused on by the English teacher before starting the class for the ninth grade. The diagnostic test helps the English teacher to prepare the English materials that fit with the students’ needs. Keywords: diagnostic test, assessment, English learning materials

Abstract

Due to globalisation, having an effective communicative skill becomes a pivotal issue. To make effective communication, not only do people require adequate language skills but also the intercultural competence through which mutual understanding across the cultural boundary can be attained should be taken into account. Thereby, English teachers duties are expected not only to provide and facilitate students to gain English skills but also intercultural competence. This study aimed to reveal the EFL teachers' views and beliefs regarding intercultural competence in English teaching practice. The subjects comprised twenty-nine teachers having experience in teaching at some educational institutions, namely schools, universities, and English courses. Based on the collected data using questionnaires and interviews, it was found that most of the teachers had positive views of integrating cultures and intercultural competence into their English teaching practice. Besides, they viewed cultures as an inseparable part of the language. Moreover, teachers' knowledge of the target culture was found to be categorized high. In their teaching practice, they reported that various techniques were utilized to facilitate intercultural language teaching. However, it was found that the way the target cultures were integrated into English teaching had not been adequately considered good; hence, some systematic endeavor was suggested to cope with the issue.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to know the relationship between students' motivation and the reading comprehension. This research is a quantitative research approach, and the methodology that the writer use is correlational research. The population of this research are the tenth-grade students of SMKN 8 Bekasi that have ten classes. The writer only takes one class (Accountant 2) with 33 students by using random sampling from the population. In collecting the data, the writer uses a questionnaire to measure students' motivation which is adopted from R.C. Gardner, Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) and to measure students reading comprehension ability the writer uses reading comprehension test. The data are collected and calculated by using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient Correlation. The writer finds that the ro 0,842 is higher than rt 0,34 (ro > rt ) from the result of calculating by using the Pearson Product Moment Coefficient Correlation. The result can be concluded that the research hypothesis Ho is rejected and Hi accepted. From the conclusion, it can be proved that the verbal hypothesis has been accepted. Then, ro 0,842 it means that xy is higher than zero points. Thus, the statistical hypothesis has been accepted too. Those can prove that there is a relationship between the students’ motivation and the reading comprehension at the tenth grade in the first semester at the SMKN 8 Bekasi of the 2020/2021 academic year. The research result, the writer hopes that this research is useful for the English teacher and reader. Keywords: Motivation, Correlational Study, AMTB

Abstract

Abstract: This article is arranged to review and compare the theory about implementing of Robinson's strategy (SQ3R) to enhance reading prowess in English context. As we know that reading is the imperative skill at various academic levels. In reading activities, especially reading English texts, lack of motivation is a serious problem faced by students. This can be influenced for the students’ interest in reading activity. Besides, the limited time in reading activity can be the problems when the students in reading class. Furthermore, lack of vocabulary can be the obstacle for the students to understand and acquire the information during they read the English text. To solve these difficulties, we need to find a strategy that can be applied to the students in enhancing their reading. One of the strategy that can be used to solve the problems is utilizing SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) strategy. In this article, the writer would review and discuss about the theory of SQ3R as the reading strategy, the mechanism of this theory, the advantages and the challenges, and also the previous study. This article will be closed with the conclusion and recommendation to apply SQ3R as the strategy in reading class.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze "Ende Tanganku Na Metmet", which is a traditional song in the Toba Batak language by using translation techniques into English. Translation techniques are the methods used by translators to convey messages from the source language to the translation language. Translation techniques can explain the essence of the object of translation which is applied at the level of words, phrases, clauses, or sentences. The theory used is the Newmark translation technique. This research method is descriptive analysis. Abstract

One of the impacts of Covid-19 pandemic is on educational sector in which the government closes the school access temporarily to avoid the spread of Covid19 and suggests the distance learning by opening educational platform that can be used by the institutions and educators to reach students remotely and limit educational distractions. Zoom cloud meeting is one of the platforms that is widely used as a learning media because this application allows learning activities or discussions like in face to face learning and support communication needs with many people anywhere and anytime without meeting physically. This research intended to describe the conditions occur in distance learning process using zoom as an alternative solving problems and its effectiveness in teaching English to nursing students during covid-19 pandemic. This research method is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques performed by distributing questionnaire via Google Form and doing interview through Whatsapp video call. The result showed only 44% students mentioned if using zoom is effective in learning English. It indicated that the use of Zoom Meeting is not quite effective because it is constrained by bad network that causes intermittent voice, and the lack of students' level of understanding on the material being taught because English is different from other courses which use our native Indonesian language. Besides, it is difficult in practicing conversations which are carried out in pairs or in groups. However, Zoom application is better than other educational platforms because it facilitates distance learning and enables discussion like in a real classroom.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the students' autonomy level in vocabulary development and teachers' role in fostering students' autonomy level. This research explored university students' level of autonomy in English learning and to gain a better understanding of teachers' role in promoting LA in vocabulary development. A qualitative case study design was conducted to analyze the data. The findings showed that the students capable of controlling their learning strategy, motivation, and emotion understood the best condition to study; in this case, the student may control their learning vocabulary capacity, influencing their autonomy level. Furthermore, the teacher's teaching strategy also influenced the student's autonomy level. The more teachers engaged students in the classroom activity, the more they could control their learning strategy, which meant their autonomy level was getting higher. The research's implication is allowing the student to select their preferred method of learning can assist them in increasing their vocabulary. Practical strategies to learn vocabulary must be included to develop learner autonomy because learners' input in the academic context plays a vital role in independent vocabulary learning.
