Abstract

This study examined the differences in ritual offerings depicted in three different horror films: The Wailing (South Korea), The Medium (Thailand), and Mangkujiwo (Indonesia). The offerings used in these films demonstrated cultural ritual practices for interacting with spiritual entities. The aim of this research was to study the meaning and differences of the offerings displayed in the three films, where each element of the offering had its own significance within a particular culture. The ethnographic method of Spradley was used to collect research data through textual and visual analysis. The research findings, based on Raymond Firth's theory, categorized the offerings into three types: Personal, Value, and Voluntary. In Mangkujiwo, the offerings reflected the mysterious Javanese tradition, which involved communication with ancestors to seek their blessings. In The Medium, Thai shamans used offerings to maintain the balance between the supernatural and human realms. In contrast, in The Wailing, offerings were used in Korean culture to protect oneself from evil spirits. The differences in the traditions of offerings showed that, although the elements used were similar, offerings were more than just spiritual symbols; they also reflected profound cultural identities and values. Overall, this study revealed how Asian cultures understood and practiced their relationship with the spiritual world through offerings, aimed at fulfilling desires and seeking protection.

Abstract

Indonesian language learning requires language skills that include listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One important aspect in this learning is reading, which plays a role in improving students' understanding of the text. This study aims to analyze the results of project-based folklore reading learning with a scientific approach in grade IV students. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation, documentation, and analysis of student learning outcomes. The results showed that out of 10 students who participated in the learning, 7 students (70%) achieved learning completion with a final score of ≥ 70, while 3 students (30%) had not achieved the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM). Students with good reading comprehension tend to get higher project and presentation scores, while students with low comprehension have difficulty in both aspects. This shows a correlation between reading comprehension skills and success in project and presentation assignments. Based on these findings, more varied learning strategies are needed to help students who have not achieved completion, such as additional guidance, effective reading techniques, and more intensive presentation practice. With a more interactive and student-oriented approach, it is expected that all students can achieve optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the structure of compound sentences in digital news articles related to political events of the President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, published on CNBC Indonesia. The main focus of the research is to identify the types of compound sentences used in news reports, with an emphasis on analyzing compound sentences using the theory of compound sentence syntax. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through literature study and document analysis. The data used comes from sentences in the news that discuss current political issues related to President Yoon, such as martial law and impeachment. In this analysis, special attention is paid to sentences that use subordinate clauses, conjunctions, and compound sentence structures that describe cause-and-effect relationships, time, and political context. This concept of compound sentences is used to understand the relationship between clauses in the reported political context. The research results show that multilevel and mixed compound sentences have an important role in conveying complex and layered information, which is often needed in news reports about political events. In addition, the subordinate clauses in these sentences help clarify the relationship between events and their impact on society and government. Through this analysis, it can be understood how sentence structures in digital news support readers' understanding of ongoing political events, as well as exploring the language techniques used to strengthen messages in news reports.

Abstract

Mermaids are one of the most popular mythological creatures and are often discussed today. It's no wonder that nowadays, mermaids are featured in various media, including films. More interestingly, it turns out that each culture has a different interpretation of mermaids, especially their portrayal. This research explores the portrayal of mermaids in three cultural contexts depicted in the films Mermaid and Swordsman (China), The Little Mermaid Live Action (Denmark), and Mermaid in Love 2 Dunia (Indonesia). Using Hayward's (2018) theoretical framework, this analysis categorises these representations into 2 framework perspectives: syncretic and mermaidisation, highlighting cultural integration and transformation in their depiction. The results show that Chinese mermaids combine elements of traditional mythology with cultural motifs, such as traditional hanfu clothing. In Denmark, mermaid depictions blend classical folklore and modern interpretations of values. Meanwhile, mermaids in Indonesia feature innovative elements, such as an upright swimming style and the integration of local fish motifs that reflect the archipelago's distinctive cultural adaptations. By analysing representation in narratives of various cultures, this research contributes to understanding how cultural adaptation is depicted in the representation of mythological creatures, such as mermaids. In addition, this research also provides insights for future interdisciplinary studies on how mermaids are portrayed in various cultures in popular media such as film, mythology, and cultural studies.
