Abstract

Background: Family involvement in the care of critically ill patients positively impacts treatment outcomes and patient well-being. Nursing technology has become an essential tool in facilitating family engagement   Aims: This study aims to conduct a systematic review of nursing technology that supports family involvement in critically ill patients. Methods: This article utilized a systematic review method. Articles were assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist. The instruments were the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Randomized Controlled Trials and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Cohort Studies. Literature from the past five years was obtained from four databases: Science Direct, Scopus, Springer Link, and ProQuest. Results: Out of 148 articles, 15 were analyzed. Various technologies (such as web-based platforms, tablets, SMS tools, and video conferencing) were used to provide information, enhance decision-making, and provide virtual access to family conferences. Although interventions varied, "Information sharing" and "Activation and participation" were most commonly implemented in the family involvement model. In studies that discussed the components of family involvement more comprehensively, interventions allowed for information adjustment through two-way communication and active family participation in the decision-making process. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this systematic review, it can be concluded that nursing technology has great potential in supporting family involvement in critically ill patients. This technology can significantly improve family well-being, communication, and decision-making. Further research can focus on a deeper understanding of the emotional impact experienced by families of critically ill patients due to the use of technology.

Abstract

Aging appears to be associated with a rise in the prevalence of inactivity. The Covid-19 pandemic was also reported associated with physical functioning and fall outcomes, with the greatest effect on individuals with reduced physical activity and social. Therefore, the elderly as the most populous group vulnerable need serious attention. Gait efficacy is defined as an individual’s perception of their level of confidence in order to perform safe walking tasks. Increasing older adults' gait-related self-efficacy is potentially necessary in order to promote self-regulation of physical activity and initiate the development of good physical activity habits as early prevention of disuse syndrome or inactivity in older adults.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted on nursing in a variety of ways. Many parts of the world experienced long-term lockdowns and what work could be done remotely was undertaken that way. For those nurses engaged in research activities, particularly clinical nursing research, it presented immense challenges. Questionnaire-based research had to be moved exclusively online, while interview-based research was managed using videoconference facilities and making some qualitative research approaches requiring participant observation more difficult. Being able to recruit participants for research was further challenged as researchers were unable to recruit in person and needed to resort to a multitude of online approaches such as using social media platforms. As a result of impacted recruitment, many researchers needed to report their research as being unable to meet quality measures such as sample size calculations or data saturation. This particularly impacted research students with time pressures to complete, and report on, their studies. Similarly, they needed to acknowledge in their study limitations how the pandemic had impacted on their research.

Abstract

Undoubtedly, Evidence-based Practice (EBP) contributes to enhanced patient outcomes, with nurses being the largest healthcare provider group. Especially in cases of poor patient prognosis, treatment decisions are often influenced by colleagues' successful approaches. Journal clubs prove effective in various learning outcomes, including enhancing knowledge, critical appraisal skills, perceived reading habits, and reading behavior. Virtual Journal Clubs (vJCs) have greater potential to address time constraints, low participant attendance, and other minor obstacles compared to traditional face-to-face journal clubs. Nurses' impact on promoting evidence-based practice is consistent across aspects such as improved knowledge, critical appraisal skills, research utilization skills, interest in conducting research, and nursing skills.
