Abstract

Gardening belongs to the recent activity or trend that can be done by all ages. In addition, these activities can hinder people from all daily problems and also become healthy routines that can be done on the sidelines of routine work. However, the conditions for urban residents, especially Surabaya has made gardening difficult to do because of limited land. Besides, the high population in Surabaya which reaches 2.7 million people has caused the settlements density increasing. This research concerned with the problem of hydroponic gardening facilities for limited land and household scale by utilizing verticulture hydroponic techniques and modern technology, so that people can implement a healthy lifestyle by consuming and producing organic vegetable products without using pesticides. This study employed a mix method by combining the methods of qualitative (research method based on intensive observation and interviews) and quantitative (research method based on the results of a questionnaire that will become supporting data in the study). Furthermore, the case studies were conducted in 2 places, Surabaya and Sidoarjo. The design applied auto-control and clean design concepts and this research obtained 5 design developments. The final design was resulted from a visual questionnaire; the development of design 4 using a modular system so that it is easy to disassemble and the user will be convenient to apply the product. Next, the production process was carried out within the scale 1:1 and closed with conclusions and suggestions.

Abstract

Having a pet is a hobby for some people to relieve stress or boredom, because their behavior is considered fun and attractive. Interaction between humans and pets occured in many areas in the house, caused positive psychological effects for their owners. However, the observation showed that not many owners pay attention to the facilities between humans and their pets. This caused a lack of place for interaction and a place to do activities in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The design purpose is to help owners and pets do their activity together, and have a close relationship between each other. The design method is design thinking with the stages of understand, define, point of view, idea, prototype, test, and implement. The concept of this design is "merge", which means combining or joining. The final products are 3 sets of alternative designs and 1 set of realized pet furnituree, consist of storage cabinets, chairs, tables, and sidetable. The knockdown system is applied to this design so that the packaging and the product assembling is more practical and simpler. Activities they can do together, for example, when relaxing, watching TV, reading, or eating-drinking, they still can interact while using this product.

Abstract

In Indonesia, there are several clothing industries that are already engaged in recycling their textile waste. However, it is mostly done by MSMEs. Fabric waste processing generally results in handicraft or art products. Pre-consumer textile waste consists of various types of fabric left over from the cutting or production process of clothing. The huge amount of fabric waste generated by factories can be processed into re-fiber that is soft and lightweight like cotton. This material is easy to mix with other materials to create processed materials for interior products. This research focuses on the potential of processing fabric waste into fibers mixed with other materials into new materials. The method applied in this research is experimentation. The trial gives an idea of the quality and optimization of the application of the material which is expected to be a support for interior products that are ecological, strong, aesthetically valuable and economically valuable.  The findings of this research are panel materials that are expected to be used as decorative elements in space, as well as supporting furniture.

Abstract

Early age or the golden age is a time of rapid development and growth of children. Education and stimulation through children's play activities are very influential for children's physical and mental development. Play is a need for early childhood that must be met for children's cognitive and motor development. But giving too many toys to children can inhibit children's creativity, make children bored quickly, and make children's concentration decrease. Children aged 5-6 years have the characteristics of more concrete thinking, realism, and high imagination. Based on this background, the author will design a constructive toy for children aged 5-6 years that can increase children's creativity with a more varied game system for children to play to challenge their creativity. The design method used is design thinking with five stages, namely empathise, define, ideate, protoype, and test. This design produces constructive toys for children aged 5-6 years with a flexible connection system adapted to the shape of the joints of motion, with this connection system toys can be arranged and moved so that children can maximally develop their imagination.

Abstract

Desk and sitting facilities are important factors in creating a physical work environment that affects the performance and effectiveness of work activities in office. The important factors that influence this design are ergonomics and the correct working posture. Most office activities in Indonesia, are performed in static position for a long period of time, which is bad for health in the future. In this study, there are 3 problems that are raised. First, how to solve static work position problem, and Does body posture affect fatigue and user comfort and whether facility dimensions, behaviour, and time period factors are related to stress intensity. This study uses design thinking as a method with 3 stages: inspiration (understand, observe, and point of view), ideation (ideate, prototype, and test), and implementation (storytelling, pilot, business model canvas). This design resulted in 3 sets of alternative designs and 1 set of real sit-stand work facilities, such as standing chair and standing desk. The product set tested by respondents to find the evaluation of ergonomic factors, time division for dynamic work positions, and recommendations for dynamic work designs with ergonomic principles for development and improvement of the product in the future

Abstract

The number of car and motorcycle users in Indonesia is increasing from year to year, along with the higher accident rate. The cause of accidents is the vehicle drivers who often violate traffic rules and signs. Due to the lack of adequate public transportation, teenagers are allowed by their parents to drive cars and motorbikes. However, most of these teenagers do not understand traffic well and often end up breaking the rules. Examples of violations include not carrying a SIM and STNK when driving, not wearing a helmet or seat belt, violating traffic signs, and breaking through traffic lights. One method to provide an understanding of traffic to teenagers is through games. Teenagers like communal games such as board games and therefore it is appropriate to apply this method. The purpose of this research is to design a game that can provide an understanding for teenagers to be more aware of the importance of safety in traffic. This research was conducted by distributing questionnaires in advance to find out what teenagers liked. As a result, teenagers like simple objects with colorful shapes. This style is used as a reference in designing a traffic-themed board game.

Abstract

This study aims to design an efficient and functional automotive accessory cabinet using a modular system for a home garage with limited space. Along with the growth of the global furnitur industry and the need for efficient storage space, a modular system is chosen because of its flexibility in adjusting the size of the space. This cabinet is designed to be easily disassembled according to user needs, maximizing garage space efficiency without reducing aesthetics. This study uses a qualitative method with a Design Thinking approach, involving five stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Teak wood is chosen as the main material because of its durability and aesthetic value. The modular design not only meets the needs of storing automotive accessories, but also supports the principle of sustainability through the use of durable and environmentally friendly materials. The results show that this modular design is effective in optimizing limited space, providing a flexible and aesthetic solution for storage in a home garage. The modular system ensures that the cabinet can be customized and used in various configurations, allowing users to optimize limited garage space. The modular system has advantages over conventional designs in optimizing limited space. Unlike traditional cabinets that have a fixed structure, the modular system allows adjustments and rearrangements as needed, making it more flexible, efficient, and can maximize every inch of space.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world in 2019 caused the number of medical masks to be used to increase. The increasing use of masks has led to a high amount of mask waste being used and environmental pollution caused by people who often throw away masks carelessly. Medical masks are made from polypropylene (PP) which is difficult to decompose, so medical mask waste needs to be handled so it doesn't pollute the environment. Among the three basic techniques for treating waste, the recycle technique was chosen. This study uses a meta-analysis method, which involves analysing data obtained from other journals. Of the 6 journals studied, the recycling techniques that are suitable for PP materials and are most often used by Indonesian people are hot press and extrusion. The recycling technique analysis is based on data collected through the Google Scholar website. Through this research, the advantages and disadvantages of hot press and extrusion techniques can be obtained. Both of these techniques produce different forms of plastic, as the hot press technique which produces plastic sheets is more suitable for use in the handicraft recycling process, while extrusions that produce plastic pellets are more suitable for use in large-scale, high-scale recycling processes such as furniture and other interior materials.

Abstract

Coconut has so various benefits that can be made for numerous products. Antoga Jaya belongs to one of food processing industries in Surabaya which uses coconuts as the raw materials for making coconut milk. This company can spend more or less 300 coconuts in which shells are not further processed and only become wastes. Considering this opportunity, the researcher used the coconut shells as the raw materials for producing goods particularly interior accessories. This applied research employed experimental technique. To get information concerning coconut shells, the researcher conducted a case study at Antoga Jaya for investigating the existing waste of coconut shells there. In addition, the researcher carried out a case study at Adjiopet Craft in Surabaya to gain information on how coconut shells could be used for making a certain product. Several phases of experiment were involved such as the processes of sorting, washing, cleaning, shaping pattern, finishing, preserving, lighting, and combining patterns as well as other materials. As a result, this research yielded the ultimate product of interior accessories such as sitting lamp, flower vase, clock, and wall-ornaments
