Abstract

One of the competencies or learning goals in the 2013 curriculum is to promote curiosity, creativity, and the ability to arranging problem to build critical thinking which are necessary for intelligent life. However, in reality, students's critical thinking skills in mathematics are still not satisfactory. Mathematic’ material and critical thinking skills are two things that cannot be separated because mathematics material can be understood through critical thinking which is trained through learning mathematics. Learning number patterns aims to equip students to think critically, analyze, creatively, logically, and systematically. Students' critical thinking skills have related to the existence of cognitive aspects like how to complete a task, make procedures design, and be able to give the right solution in solving problems. This study aims to understand how students of junior high school solve math problems with number pattern material reviewed from students's critical thinking with Field-Dependent (FD) and Field-Independent (FI) cognitive style. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method with case study design. From the results of study conducted on 14 students, there were 64% students in the Independent field category and 36% students in the Dependent field category. Of the 2 students, among them taken in the Independent field category, they have high-level critical thinking skills and medium-level critical thinking skills. There are 2 students among those taken in the Dependent field category have critical thinking skills on medium level and low level.

Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking skills in mathematics learning is an ability that needs to be mastered by every student in order to support students in the learning process. The purpose of this study was to analyzing the influence and interaction of the ARCS model and learning motivation on students' mathematical critical thinking skills. This research is a quasi-experimental design using cluster random sampling as a sampling technique. The data collection technique used an essay test to determine MCT and a questionnaire to see motivation. The data analysis technique used the normality test, homogeneity, and two-way ANOVA. The results have shown that there is an effect of the ARCS learning model on students' mathematical critical thinking ability, there is no influence of learning motivation on mathematical critical thinking skills, and there is no interaction between ARCS model learning and motivation towards mathematical critical thinking ability. Therefore, the ARCS model can be solution to fostering of mathematical critical thinking abilities.

Abstract

Creativity is very necessary for learning mathematics, especially when solving geometry problems. This research aims to describe 4th year mathematics education students’ creativity in solving geometry problems. Creativity in this research is focused on fluency, flexibility, and originality of student anwer when solving geometry problems. This research is an explorative descriptive research through a qualitative approach. The participants were 7 fourth year mathematics education students of state University in Mataram, who have a high level of visual-spatial intelligence. The data was collected by written test and interview. The test consisted of two open-ended geometry problems about transforming 3-dimensional images into 2-dimensional images and making 2-dimensional images with a predetermined circumference. The problems are modification of the 2006 PISA test. The result showed that subjects with high visual-spatial intelligence levels met all indicators of creativity. In solving problems that meet the aspects of fluency, flexibility and originality, they combine mental rotation and mental visualization abilities and include using their visual experience by modifying the information obtained and the initial problem solving ideas obtained. This also enables them to produce original problem solutions. The results of this research can be used as an illustration and a guideline to assess students’ creativity with high visual-spatial intelligence level.

Abstract

This article discussed about a dynamic analysis of the symbiotic model of commensalism and parasitism with harvesting in the commensal population. This model is obtained from a modification of the symbiosis commensalism model. This modification is by adding a new population, namely the parasite population. Furthermore, it will be investigated that the three populations can coexist. The analysis carried out includes the determination of all equilibrium points along with their existence and local stability along with their stability requirements. From this model, it is obtained eight equilibrium points, namely three population extinction points, two population extinction points, one population extinction point and three extinction points can coexist. Of the eight points, only two points are asymptotically stable if they meet certain conditions. Next, a numerical simulation will be performed to illustrate the model’s behavior. In this article, a numerical simulation was carried out using the RK-4 method. The simulation results obtained support the results of the dynamic analysis that has been done previously.

Abstract

The research purpose shown in this article is describing the time dependent reproduction number of coronavirus called by COVID-19 in the new normal period  for 3 types areas, i.e. small, medium and global areas by considering the number of people in these areas.  It is known that in early June 2020, Indonesia has claimed to open activities during the pandemic with the new normal system. Though the number of COVID-19 cases is still increasing in almost infected areas, normal activities are coming back with healty care protocols where public areas are opened as usual with certain restrictions. In order to have observations of spreading impact of COVID-19, the basic reproduction number (Ro)  i.e. the reproduction number (Ro) is the ratio between 2 parameters of SIR model where SIR stands for Susceptible individuals, Infected individuals, and Recovered individuals respectively. The reproduction numbers  are computed as discrete values depending on time. The used research method is  finite difference scheme for computing rate of change parameters in SIR models based on the COVID-19 cases in Indonesia (global area), Jakarta (medium area) and Salatiga (small area) by considering the number of people in these areas respectively. The simple forward finite difference is employed to the SIR model to have time dependent of parameters. The second approach is using the governing linear system to obtain the values of parameter daily. These parameters are computed for each day such that the values of Ro are obtained as function of time. The research result shows that 3 types areas give the same profiles of parameters that the rate of changes of reproduction numbers are decreasing with respect to time. This concludes that the reproduction numbers are most likely decreasing.

Abstract

Many students in the world have difficulty in solving word problems, including students in Indonesia. TIMSS has shown that only eight percent of Indonesian participants are able to solve word problems, this result is hugely lower than the international average of 18 percent. One of the factors that cause students' errors in solving word problems is mathematical resilience. Thus, this study aims to analyze students' misconceptions in solving word problems viewed by their mathematical strength. This study was conducted for sixth-grade students in one of the elementary schools in Bandung. This study was qualitative descriptive research. In this study, there were four steps: selecting the word problems, answering the issues, filling out a mathematical resilience questionnaire, and interviewing. Students were encouraged to respond to a three-word question within 30 minutes, filling out a mathematical resilience questionnaire followed by the interview. This study showed that the students' errors in solving word problems were including comprehension, transformation, and process skill errors. Based on mathematical resilience, students with a low level of resilience predominantly carried out comprehension errors. In contrast, students with a moderate level of resilience more dominant made transformation errors. Meanwhile, students with high resilience completed more questions correctly, although several students seemed to have made process skills errors. This study's limitation is the data obtained online so that the respondents completed the instrument exceeds the given time. Further researches are suggested to conduct directly in the classroom to maximize the accuracy of the study.

Abstract

Several inconsistent research results regarding the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing Mathematical Abilities (MA) of primary school students have been reported widely by some researchers. To summarize, estimate, and evaluate the effect of PBL on MA of primary school students and investigate the study characteristics that provoked the heterogeneous effect size, a systematic review and meta-analysis was employed. Hedge's equation was employed to measure effect size using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software as an analysis tool. The synthesis of 16 relevant primary studies revealed that the overall implementation of PBL had a high positive effect (g = 1,050) significantly compared to conventional learning on MA of primary school students based on a random effect model. Moreover, the characteristics of the sampling technique, publication index, and MA significantly caused the heterogeneity of the effect size of PBL towards students' MA. Thus, these results suggest that primary school mathematics teachers should select PBL as one of the best solutions to enhance students' MA and consider the characteristics of students MA that will be improved. Besides, researchers should select random sampling as a sampling technique to select the sample and the literature indexed by Scopus as references to support the quality of research.

Abstract

This research aims to obtain optimal value for the surface roughness of the material AISI P20 on the Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) Sinking process. In the present research, the Taguchi method is used to investigate the significant influence of process variables on the machining performance and determine the combination of process variables on the EDM process. Orthogonal array L18 (21 × 33) based on the Taguchi method is chosen for the design of experiment. The experiment is replicated twice to finding out the influence of four process variables such as type of electrode, voltage gap, on-time, and off-time on the response performance. Machining performance is evaluated by surface roughness as a response variable that had quality characteristics, smaller is better. These experimental data were analyzed using the Signal-to-noise ratio and Analysis of Variance. The analysis results show that the surface roughness is influenced by the type of electrode and on time. Combination of process variables to obtain optimal surface roughness are using graphite electrodes, and setting values of gap voltage 40 volt, on-time 250 μs, and off-time 20 μs. This combination of process variables can be applied to the manufacturing process using EDM sinking in order to produce a good quality product that determined based on the surface roughness value.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) will be a serious threat if not handled quickly and appropriately. The relatively long treatment in time and the high risk of death is a challenge in controlling the spread of this disease. The DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-course) strategy is considered capable of controlling the spread of TB because of the high success rate, reaching 91%. The mathematical model of the spread of TB has been widely studied to determine the potential for the spread of this disease in an area. The purpose of this study is to build a model of tuberculosis spread in Lamongan to determine the rate of its spread and to predict whether it will be endemic or not. Using disease spread mathematical model type SEITR, this research has examined based on 2018 and 2019 data from the Lamongan health office then simulates the result. The research begins with the construction of the model followed by a stability analysis of the model by determining the basic reproduction number ( ), which is simulated after the parameter approach was carried out. From the simulation results, the result shows that   means that TB will not endemic in Lamongan. Besides, the results of the effect of parameter ω on I(t) were obtained, which concluded that seeking and treating active TB alone would only reduce infected individuals but not reduce the length of time TB spread. Identification of the effect of parameter φ on I(t) has also been carried out which results in the conclusion that more treatment for susceptible individuals, in addition to reducing the number of infected individuals, will also reduce the length of time TB spreads in that area. This result will be a good suggestion for the government to deal faster with tuberculosis transmission.
