Abstract

This paper focuses on analyzing teachers’ perspective of using language games. The subjects were eleven  English teachers who teach at Muhammadiyah junior and senior high school located in Surabaya. They were taken by using proportional stratified random sampling. The details were seven from Muhammadiyah junior high schools and four from Muhammadiyah senior high schools.  This research took one English teacher from each school.  The research instruments were questionnaire and interview. Based on data analysis, it gathered several results; first the teachers prefer non digital language games. Second, if they apply language games in pre teaching, they become as “a bridge” to the new topic being discussed. When the teachers hold language game in the post teaching activity, the purpose is to check the students’ comprehension. The teachers agree that language games give positive insights toward the students in learning English.  However, these also bring some problem – the need of using L1 for students to understand how they run the language games and to win the game.

Abstract

Every language has its characteristics in the production of sound. When learning a new language, one probably encountered unfamiliar sounds. For EFL students in Indonesia, they will find it hard to pronounce interdental fricative sound like [θ] and [ð] because, in Indonesian pronunciation, there are no interdental fricative sounds. Therefore, the limited consonant sounds in Indonesian that is not similar become one of the barriers for the students to pronounce the words in English properly. For instance, the words that contain interdental fricative sounds in word-initial position as in 'this' and 'thin', medial as in ‘father’ and ‘authority’, and final part as in ‘booth’ and ‘truth’. Based on this problem, this research attempts to find out and analyze the production of voiceless and voiced interdental fricatives by EFL students in Bandung using the help of software Praat (Boersma, 2001). The data were collected from four students with their voice recordings in pronouncing the words in English that contain an initial, medial and final position of interdental fricative. The result shows that the voiceless interdental fricative [θ] is produced as [d],[t],[th] and elimination of [θ] sound, while the voiced interdental fricative sound [ð] is produced as [d], [t] sounds.

Abstract

The readers prefer to read the abstract in order to find out the contents. It has to be short, easily read, and understandable. It consists of complete elements or components. The aimed of this study were to reveal the components of abstract and to find out what were patterns of moves. The researchers used descriptive qualitative approach because this study focused on the analysis or interpretation of the written material in context. Quirkos Application was used to sort, manage, analyzed and understand the data. From the results that already exist, there are thirteen procedures of writing abstracts used by writers in Indonesian International Journals Indexed Scopus. Those were I, IP, IR, IPR, IRD, IMR, PMR, PMD, IMRD, PMRD, IPMR, PIRM, and IPMRD. There are limitations in this research that have to be considered. First, this corpus consists of abstracts in only areas of Indonesia. Second, further research is necessary to determine the variables that affect the writers’ model in writing an appropriate abstract. Thirdly, the researchers only analyzed 47 abstracts.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe study aimed to determine the effect of using the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Method on the reading skills of students at UTM Mataram. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental research design in which the researcher placed two different groups and gave them different treatments. The sampling technique used random sampling with a total of 20 students. The research instrument used pre-test and post-test. The data analysis technique used a t-test. And the research result is that there is a positive and significant effect. The experimental group of this study was taught using the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) Method, while the control group of the study was taught using the conventional reading method. The results of the pretest and posttest were found to be satisfactory with the level of achievement of the median homogeneity of 0.449> 0.05, the normality test of 0.715 greater than 0.05, and the results of the t-calculation to determine the effectiveness of the CIRC Method of 0.449> 0.05, which shows that this method was able to boost the effectiveness of student learning. At the end of this study, hopefully, the results of this study can benefit all education stakeholders such as teachers, students, scholars, and even other researchers to support them in creating and analyzing creative and innovative language teaching methods. The researcher expects that the findings of this research can provide some evidence about cooperative language teaching, in this case, the CIRC Method to support the improvement of the teaching and language learning process at UTM Mataram in particular.
