Abstract

Refusal isnegative responses to request, invitations, suggestions, offers, and the like which are frequently used in our daily lives (Sadler & Eroz, 2001: 55). Refusing is not just directly by saying no, but it can be an indirect utterance by giving additional explanation or reason, statement of regret, etc. However, the researcher want to analyse the context of Sang Pencerah an Indonesian national heroine from Kauman, Yogyakartascript which is a biopic moviein sociolinguistics perspectives based on socio-pragmatics approach.Sang Pencerah(The Enlightener) is a 2010 Indonesian film is a biopicof Ahmad Dahlanwhich describes how he came to found the Islamic organisation Muhammadiyah. The subject of the study is the script itself with two problem statements, they are; doesindirect refusal strategies classifications are used by the characters in the movie in their conversation, and what indicated of it is applied. To investigate of the problemsanswer, the researcherapplies a theory of refusal strategies from Bebee, Takahashi, and Uliss-Weltz’s(1998). Hence, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing this researchby using the Miles and Huberman theory. In doing the analysis, the researcher found about indirect refusal strategies and the indicated of it is applied by the characters in the conversation of Sang Pencerah script movie. There are conversations using indirect refusal strategies and the types used by the characters in the conversation of the Sang Pencerah conversation script movie are

Abstract

A creative clause is a type of clause operating either on the material process of doing or material process of happening. Since both material process types may occur in creative clauses, this study aims to investigate what verbs realize each of material process in creative clauses occurring in Mechanical Engineering texts and what verbs may realize both of the material process types in Mechanical Engineering texts. Therefore, this study employed the Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) framework to analyze the qualitative data obtained from an introductory textbook of Mechanical Engineering. The results showed that verbs create, form, make, produce, and develop realize the material process of doing while verbs appear, grow, occur, and develop realize the material process of happening. It implies that only one verb may realize both material process types.

Abstract

Violence against women is gender-related violence manifesting the men power over women. In a patriarchal society, women are inferior within hierarchical gender relations. This study is made to disclose the incidence of domestic violence against women that shows how vulnerable women are in a relationship, especially the married one. The result shows that status of a woman, housewife and mother as described by the main character in the novel is considered subordinate and susceptible to multioppression. Extremely, the marriage is such detention for her to be an independent individual. When domestic violence happens toward a wife perpetrated by her husband, between fear and prevalence assumption, society is soundless. This violence is a manifestation of relational vulnerability.

Abstract

Learning English subject matter using Modal auxiliary verbs is felt difficult for students especially in creating simple sentences. Based on the results of the initial researchers' observations at SMPN 7 Mataram, English learning is still dominated by conventional learning. Therefore class VIII must be given an action in the form of more effective.Spelling bee is a competition that asks students to spell the words as well as the sounds of a buzz. The Spelling bee is conducted orally, and it looks at contests of accuracy rather than speed. In this game, the pronouncer should allow students to ask for repetitions, sample sentences, the meaning of the word. The pronouncer has to give them the possible chance of spelling their words correctly. Regarding the definition, the researcher tries to conduct the spelling bee game in teaching vocabulary at the seventh-grade students of MTs Hidayatullah Mataram. The objective of the research is to investigate whether the use of spelling bee game has a positive effect on students' vocabulary or not, and the scope of the study only focuses on noun and verb. This research uses a quasi-experimental design and purposive technique sampling. The researcher takes two classes that are divided into an experimental and a control class. The population of the seventh-grade students consists of 50 students where the control class or VIIA consists of 25 students, and the experimental class or VIIB consists of 25 students. This research uses pre-test and post-test to collect the data. To analyze the data, the researcher uses SPSS program and manual computation in order to investigate whether the use of spelling bee game has a positive effect or not. Based on the result data  by using SPSS program shows that the mean score of the experimental class in pre-test is 50.84 which is classified as fairly score, and post-test is 80.96 is classified as Good score. The value of significance 2-tailed of Mann Whitney is 0.000 smaller than 0.05, it means that Ha is accepted. On the other hand, the manual computation shows that The value of t test = 2.800, df= 48, and t table for sig 0.05=1.677, and t table for sig 0.01= 2.406, it means that  t test is higher than t table.. Thus, the use of spelling bee game has a positive effect to the students' vocabulary at the seventh-grade students of MTs Hidayatullah Mataram in the academic year 2018/2019.

Abstract

Citing other authors works is essential in Research Articles (RAs).  The citation is used to support claims academically. The citation is described as a way to interact with the readers and to acknowledge other scholars. Viewing from Appraisal framework developed by Martin and White [1] which is based on Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction, this activity is described as Engagement system. This study focused on exploring acknowledgement, a branch of  Engagement system, found in Mechanical Engineering RAs published by Elsevier. Applying qualitative method, the data were taken from five research articles of Mechanical Engineering in 2021. Thus, the data were examined using the framework of Engagement system. What can be highlighted from the results is that the acknowledgment serving as citation may be realized by projection of mental and verbal clauses with limited choice of lexical verbs, such as report, emphasize, propose, realizing both types of process. Nevertheless, the implication of this study may help EAP practitioners in teaching citation of RAs for Mechanical Engingeering  learners.

Abstract

The claim that serial verb constructions encode a single event is made with great regularity in the literature on serial verbs but is a claim that I find difficult to test in critical cases (Comrie, 1995). Sasaknese has a lot of serial verbs. This unique feature cannot be easily found in every language. This paper focused on analyzing the notion of ‘single-event’ in Sasaknese V-V constructions. In this study, the X-bar theory is applied to discuss the constituent structure of serial verb constructions. This study used the data of Sasaknese meno-mené native speakers’ utterances by using observation method. The result of the study shows that Sasak serial verb constructions have V-V structure that describe one single event as a single predicate.

Abstract

This study aims at determining the effectiveness of using "Question Cards" in improving students speaking ability at class VII of SMP Muhammadiyah Mataram. This study is part of a pre-experimental study known as a pre-test and post-test group design, in which the sample is given a pre-test before treatment and a post-test after treatment. There was no control group in this investigation; instead, only one experimental group was used. This study takes a quantitative approach to its findings. The participants in this study were seventh-graders from Muhammadiyah Mataram Junior High School, who were divided into only one class of 16 pupils. Purposive sampling is the approach used. The use of the "Question Cards" strategy in increasing the speaking skills of SMP Muhammadiyah seventh grade students can be concluded as "successful" in this study. This is demonstrated by the students' pre-test and post-test scores, namely, the t-test score is 5.313, the consultation on the t-table at 99 percent points to 2.60, and it can be concluded that the comparison of t-test and t-table is 2.60 5.313, or in other words, the student's test results exceed the minimum standard of achievement.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the English components or sub-skill that must be taught to the students. The vocabulary has the role to develop the four language skills, they are listening, reading, writing and speaking. Many vocabularies that the students have, is the easier for them to develop it, especially in the pandemic era because of COVID-19, the teacher have to use a media like an English song to enrich the students at Mining Department of Engineering Faculty vocabularies. In order that, the purpose of this study was to investigate the use of song as a media whether it is effective or not in teaching vocabulary. The total population of this study involved 92 students but the sample of by using the purposive technique sampling got 20 students in A class as a control and 20 students at B for experimental class. The instrument of this study used multiple choice tests which consist of 20 items. The data was collected by using pre-test and post-test, then followed by analyzing the data based on Arikunto’s theory using descriptive design. As well as the manual computation the result also showed that the score of the t-test was 4.741. The researcher compare that t-table at the degrees of freedom (df) (Nx + Ny)-2 . df = 20 + 20 – 2 = 38. The degree of freedom of 38 is at the competence  interval of 0.05 (95%) is 2.024 and 0.01 (99%) is 2.711. the comparison is done between t-test formulated with t-table in which results is 4.741  it is to found that the t-table of “t” indicated: t-test 4.741  >  t-table. It means that the mean score of the experimental class was higher than control class. So, the researcher concluded that the use of song “I Love You 3000” is effective in teaching learning English at Mining Department in academic year 2018/2019 and it means that the use of song as an alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
