Abstract

Implementation of greening has a positive impact on anticipating and minimizing the impact of climate change. This study aims to analyze community participation in the implementation of greening that has been carried out in ProKlim 2 Ilir, Palembang. The population of this study was 639 households and there were 90 households as respondents. This research uses quantitative methods with a cross-sectional design. Data collection instruments are questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. The results showed participation of the community (54.4%) in the implementation of greening was classified as still bad. Characteristics of the community are mostly aged middle adults (47.8%), mostly female (72,2%), highly educated (>SMA) of 88.9%, medium knowledge (51.1%), including a length of stay in the old enough category (72.2%), and has the highest employment as a housewife (41.1%). The result of multiple logistic regression showed a variable that the education level variable (OR=5.174) influence the participation of the community in the implementation of greening.

Abstract

Oil spills on land is one of major environmental issues. The spills have been known to affect not only environment but also human health. Certain bioremediation techniques, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and land farming, have been widely applied to solve the problem. Approaches using these methods, over the years, have given varying result and rate of success. In this paper, advantages, disadvantages, and limitation of the techniques when applied will be discussed.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Urban growth concept has dragged the attention of several scholars of different fields of study for decades. Urban growth refers to expansion of urban centres in size due population growth, which hiked the number of buildings in urban centres around the world. The finding of the paper indicate that Gombe Metropolis expanded by (85 hectares) each year from 2000 to 2010 and the expansion of Gombe Metropolis occur in all direction. The rate at which Gombe Metropolis expand grown to (203 hectares) each year from 2010 up to date. Therefore, the rate at which Gombe metropolis expanded increases by 138% from 2010 to date and how number of markets increases to 16 currently from 12 in the year 2010. This paper study the Impact of urban growth on market in Gombe Metropolis. Coordinate of markets of existing markets was collected. For second set of data used in this paper i.e. secondary data which include map of Gombe metropolis, related journals, text books, published and unpublished document, and Newspaper were consulted. The data generated from questionnaire administration were analysed using tables, graphs and charts. Satellite images showing how urban growth is taken place in Gombe Metropolis were also analysed. The study examines the impact of urban growth on Gombe Metropolis markets activities over the period of study. The findings of the study indicate emergence of new markets in the study area over the years of study as a result of urban expansion that occur in Gombe Metropolis. It also indicated that the new established markets were located in areas where urban growth take place in study area and these new markets are patronized by people within the environment or vicinity of the markets. Most of the newly emerged markets are located at the periphery of the town where urban expansions occur rapidly.

Abstract

The particulate matter in vehicle emission has been shown to cause an increase in free radical levels which can increase serum MDA levels and leukocyte count. Spirulina platensis is an algae that has antioxidant effects that can scavenge free radicals. In this research, twenty-four of wistar mice are divided into 4 groups. Groups X1 and X2 received vehicle emission smoke exposure treatment and were given oral Spirulina platensis extract at a dose of 500 and 750 mg / kgBW / day for 14 days, the negative control group (C2) was given 0.9% NaCl orally and the normal control group did not get vehicle emission smoke exposure and Spirulina platensis extract. Serum MDA levels were checked by ELISA method and leukocyte count by giemsa staining. Data analysis was performed by using the one-way ANOVA test followed by Post Hoc Bonferroni. The results showed the mean serum MDA levels there was a significant difference between group C2 and group X2. In the mean absolute value of neutrophils and lymphocytes, there were significant differences between the C2 group with the administration of X1 and X2. In the mean absolute value of eosinophils and monocytes, there were significant differences between groups C1 and C2 and group X2 and between groups X1 and C1. Furthermore, the given doses of Spirulina platensis extract at a dose of 750mg / kgBW had an effect on serum MDA levels as well as the number of neutrophils and lymphocytes and the administration of doses of 500 and 750mg / kgBW affected the number of eosinophils and monocytes.

Abstract

The purpose of this review is to provide current information regarding industrial wastewater treatment with MFC technology with the addition of biocatalysts and pretreatments. Moreover, this review also updates industrial waste treatment technology with MFC technology in Indonesia. Waste could be generated from domestic activities as well as non-domestic activities, such as industries. Industries produce waste with quite high organic content. This organic material is not easily degraded in biological treatment. Wastewater treatment, currently, aims only to meet standards quality and not to reuse. In Indonesia, the reuse processes, one of which is still rarely found in the form of energy. Industries that can process and convert wastewater energy can help the government realize sustainable development in the energy sector. One of the technologies is the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). Previous MFC research that had been carried out was limited to laboratory scale with a volume of less than 1 L and, among them, used mixed or artificial waste. MFC processing uses anode in wastewater as a substrate source and generates electrons under anaerobic conditions. Electron formation could be accelerated by adding biocatalysts such as enzymes and specific microorganisms. The processing occurred in an anaerobic anode that could be increased by increasing the substrate's biodegradability value in the waste. The biodegradability value can be increased by pretreatment with ozone or ultrasonic technology. In Indonesia, research on industrial wastewater treatment with MFC as well as biocatalyst and pretreatment is still relatively minimal.

Abstract

Abstract Earthquake is one of the catastrophic natural disasters in the history of mankind which consumed hundreds and thousands of human lives every year. Attitude of man in handling natural environment make earthquakes inevitable. The study was design to examine the impact of earthquake magnitude on lives loss during earthquakes. Data adopted for study are solely secondary data which include; journals, textbooks, published and unpublished document. Sampled was derived using purposive sampling techniques, earthquakes that lives were loss during their occurrence characterized with 6.0Mw and above were selected as sample. Regression analysis, maps QGIS software, tables and graphs were used for data analysis in study. The result of the research indicate a fair relation among studied variables. Fig.1.1 Multiple R=0.073, fig. multiple=0.454 and fig. multiple R=0.452. Multiple R determine the nature of relation between study variables, the close the value of multiple R is to 1 the strong the relationship. Which means fair relationship exist between earthquake magnitudes and live loss during 1990-2019 earthquakes. And R2 result fig. 1.1, 1% of the lives lost during earthquakes 1990-1999 are determine by earthquake magnitude, R2 result in fig. 1.4 indicated 21% of the lives lost during earthquakes 2000-2009 are determine by earthquake magnitude and R2 result in fig.1.6 demonstrate 20% of the lives loss during earthquakes 2010-2019 are determine by earthquake magnitudes. Significant F results are fig. 1.1 significant F =0.613, fig. 1.4 significant F=0.001 and fig. 1.6 significant F=0.0004. Two out of the three significant F result indicated that the result of the research is reliable while one result indicated that the result is less reliable.

Abstract

To investigate its ability, graphite material was characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Thermo Gravimetry Differential Thermal Analyse (TG-DTA), and Brunauer Emmet Teller (BET). Adsorption capability was evaluated by using Congo Red dye and Direct Orange dye solutions. The experiment was studied by using kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic parameters. The result of XRD characterization showed that graphite has four characteristic peaks which are 26,405?(002), 44,50?(101), 54,45?(004), and 77,32?(006). FT-IR characterization showed that the vibration at 3402 cm-1, 1635 cm-1, and 1381 cm-1. TG-DTA analysis showed that graphite has only one decomposition peak at 760 oC. BET analysis showed that the surface area of graphite was 11,558 m2/g. The optimum pH of CR and DO dyes were in pH 6 and pH 2 with contact time of 120 minutes.  Kinetic adsorption model of CR and DO dye onto graphite follow pseudo-second-order model with a liner regression coefficient close to one. Isotherm parameter of CR and DO adsorption onto graphite follow Langmuir isotherm model with spontaneous endothermic process. The desorption process of graphite was used HCl to remove the dyes.  Regeneration process of graphite showed that the capacity of adsorption decreased after it was reused 3 times.

Abstract

Peat fire is one of the most environmental issues in Indonesia, particularly in the region of South Sumatra. The fires usually occur during the dry season from Juni to November. This study is designed to evaluate the impact of peat fires on changes in land cover in the Merang Kepahyang Peat Hydrological Region (MK-PHR) for the period of 2002 to 2015. The changes identified by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method using Landsat satellite imagery. The results of the study show that extreme peat fire associated with climate anomalies events occurred in 2006, 2012, and 2015. The largest peat fires during the observation period occurred in 2015 coincided with extreme climate anomalies generating negative changes in land cover in the most of MK-PHR areas. The changes occurred in almost half (49%) of the MK-PHR area, where it moved from the dense to moderate vegetation class. The spatial and temporal land cover changes will be discussed in more detail.

Abstract

This research was conducted to (1) analyze the household waste management system, and (2) develop a strategy for household waste management in Suzuki Resident, Watutumou III Village, Kalawat District, getting in the era of "New Normal". This research uses quantitative methods with SWOT and AHP ((Analytical Hierarchy Process) techniques. The results show that the Waste Management system has Strength, such as the efforts to apply the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), waste management fees, and improvement, facilities and infrastructure, strengthening public understanding, support from local government and APBD (Local Government Budget) of North Minahasa Regency. The waste management system has several weaknesses, such as (1) lack of facilities and infrastructure for trash bins, the absence of 3R Landfill in residential areas, and limited human resource capacity toward waste management Opportunities which is faced by the waste management system including support for provincial government policies, facilitating the marketing of waste management products that are economically valuable. Threats which are faced are the increasing volume of waste, not optimal waste management and sorting, people behavior of littering. Based on these conditions, the priority of the Household Waste Management Strategy is to improve facilities and infrastructure to support waste management. The current strategy for developing a household waste management system is in quadrant IV that is diversifying the use of force and creating more opportunities. Strategic steps in managing household waste in Suzuki Resident, Watutumou III Village, Kalawat District, getting in the era of "New Normal, are improving existing facilities and infrastructure and adding to those that do not exist, optimizing waste retribution to support waste management costs, gathering support from stakeholders who related, strengthening public understanding of household waste management, and promoting efforts to apply the 3R concept in household waste management.

Abstract

This study aims to learn the thematic evolution of Municipal Solid Waste Management research by revising Scopus indexed publications between 2001 and 2020. Within a longitudinal system, a scientific co-word inspection is conducted from 2001 to 2020. The publication series was split into two periods; the first period is from 2001 to 2010, and the second period is from 2011 to 2020. The findings, impact rates, and Municipal Solid Waste Management research’s conceptual growth are verified. In this emerging field of research, the co-word review established three key topic areas which are “Landfill”, “Urban Area”, and “Uncertainty”. The themes “Municipal Solid Waste,” “Waste Disposal,” “Costs,” “Waste to Energy” and “Environmental Impact Assessment” have changed from the first themes. The themes “Waste Management Systems,” “Treatment Technologies” and “Leachate” were found to have newly emerged and indicated that MSWM had been varied over successive periods. Future researchers could use this information to recognise the focus of awareness and make verdicts in various ways. There are a few limits of this study: 1) some of the Municipal Solid Waste Management publications may not have been included; 2) this study only considered publication records from the Scopus database, and 3) accordingly, the subject area may have changed if other new databases such as Google Scholar, Microsoft academics, or Dimensions have been retrieved. This study’s findings should be conceded as one proof-based structure for building future studies that benefit researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
