Abstract

Abundant and inexpensive Indonesian natural bentonite was activated by thermal activation at 500 oC for removal of procion red dye as one of the most used synthetic dye in the traditional songket fabric production around Palembang city. Activated bentonite product was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, and thermal analysis. The adsorption process was conducted in batch adsorption system by applying various adsorption parameter condition including, initial pH condition, contact time, and initial dye concentration. The activated bentonite characterization indicates that during the activation process, the structure of the original bentonite was not changed significantly and the result of the thermal analysis revealed that thermal activation at 500 oC was draining the water content without destructing the silica-alumina framework of bentonite. The adsorption kinetics study shows that the procion red adsorption into the activated bentonite follows the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The isotherm adsorption study revealed that procion red adsorption into activated bentonite adapted the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

Abstract

In this work, two synthetic layered double hydroxides (LDH) consists of Zn2+ as M2+ cation with different M3+ cation, i.e., Al3+ and Cr3+ were used as an adsorbent for Congo Red removal aqueous solution. Both Zn-Al and Zn-Cr LDH were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and BET surface area analyzer. The effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, and temperature were evaluated in a batch technique in order to investigate the characteristic of Congo Red adsorption onto both adsorbents. The experimental data were assessed according to the parameter of adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics. The results of LDH characterization showed that Zn-Al LDH has a higher interlayer distance than Zn-Cr LDH, although Zn-Cr LDH has a higher surface area. The FT-IR analysis indicated the interlayer space of both Zn-Cr and Zn-Al LDH was dominated by CO32- as the interlayer anion species. The adsorption kinetics study of Congo Red on both LDH revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. For the adsorption isotherm, the experimental data fit well with the Freundlich model rather than the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process that occurred on both adsorbents was spontaneous with exothermic nature.

Abstract

Separation of cellulose from sawdust using methanol and hydrocloric acid in various acid concentrations has been carried out. Cellulose from sawdust was characterized using FT-IR Spectroscopy and XRD difractometer. The cellulose was used as adsorbent for Mn2+ and Co2+ metal ions in aqueous medium. Adsorptions process was studied through variation of time interaction, concentration and separation desorption. FT-IR Spectrum shows that cellulose with 5% acid concentration has similarity with FT-IR cellulose standard. The XRD difractometer pattern of cellulose shows that cellulose has amorf structure. The adsorption rate constant of Mn2+ on cellulose from sawdust shows adsorption rate constant in cellulose is higher than in sawdust. Adsorption energy of Mn2+ metal ion in cellulose from sawdust was about 26.21 kJ/mol. The adsorption capacity of Mn2+ in cellulose is higher than in sawdust. The desorption of Mn2+ metal ion using H2O, Na-EDTA, Amonium acetic, and HCl shows that the adsorption mechanism of Mn2+ on cellulose and sawdust is dominated by chemical interaction.

Abstract

Abstract: The concentrations of DO and pH of Sugihan Rivers from the upstream at Riding, Pangkalan Lampam, OKI to the offshore region of Sugihan Estuary were analyzed at 15 sampling points during dry and rainy seasion. All measurements of DO and pH were direct analysis at the river stream. The concentrations as the average values of DO in dry seasion was 1,97 mg / L while in rainy seasion was 2,57 mg / L, and for the pH degree was 3,63 in dry seasion and 4,04 in rainy seasion, respectively. Based on the DO and pH values, this study shown the natural forests and peat lands gave contribution to the low of pH degree. The low of DO values also influenced by the pH, because decomposition in the peatlands made higher solubility of biomass to the rivers stream and decreasing the ability of oxygen to penetration into the waterbody. Keywords: DO, pH, Sugihan river, natural forest, peatland Abstrak (Indonesian): Konsentrasi DO dan pH Sungai Sugihan dari hulu di Kuda, Pangkalan Lampam, OKI ke wilayah lepas pantai Sugihan Muara dianalisis pada 15 titik sampling selama musim kering dan hujan. Kata kunci: DO, pH, Sungai Sugihan, hutan alam, lahan gambut
