Abstract

Excessive smartphone use can negatively impact the social behavior of adolescents, including emotional instability. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between smartphone use and the social interaction of adolescents in Borongloe Village. The method used in this study is quantitative with a cross-sectional study design. The sampling technique used is proportional stratified random sampling with a total sample size of 91 respondents, using a questionnaire as the instrument. The relationship test was conducted using the chi-square statistical test with a significance level of <0.05. Results: The results of the study indicate that active smartphone use is more dominant than passive use, the social behavior of adolescents tends to be poorer rather than better, and there is a significant relationship between smartphone use and the social behavior of adolescents in Borongloe Village, Gowa Regency, with a p-value of 0.00 (p < 0.05). This study concludes that there is a significant relationship between smartphone use and the social interaction of adolescents in Borongloe Village, Gowa Regency. Therefore, it is expected that adolescents will become more aware of the negative impacts of excessive smartphone use and that parents and teachers will supervise the use of smartphones by adolescents

Abstract

Adolescents are nutritionally vulnerable, and their intake is crucial to avoid nutritional problems during growth. Adolescent food consumption can be obtained from various types of food, one of them ultra-processed food (UPF). This study aims to determine the relationship between ultra-processed food consumption patterns and nutritional status and blood pressure in Catholic Junior High School Sudiang adolescents and Christian Elim High School Makassar. Methods: This study is a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The sample was selected using a proportional random sampling technique of 195 adolescents aged 13-18. UPF consumption was collected using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). The research results show adolescents are overweight at 25.6% and obese at 21%; elevated blood pressure (BP) is 14.4%, and state hypertension (HTN) is 8.2%. In addition, obese adolescents with state 1 HTN were 17.1% and elevated BP by 24.4%, while overweight adolescents with state 1 HTN were 8% and elevated BP by 14%. There is a correlation between the amount of UPF consumption and nutritional status (p-value = 0.047). At the same time, the results were negative between the frequency of UPF consumption and nutritional status (p-value = 0.312), the amount of UPF consumption and BP (p-value = 0.289), and the frequency of UPF consumption and BP (p-value = 0.059). The study concludes a significant correlation between the amount of ultra-processed food consumption and nutritional status in adolescents. Further research and public health interventions are recommended to address the impact of UPF on adolescent health.

Abstract

The prevalence of worm infection in Indonesia remains high, reaching 21.6% in 2022, with significant impacts on children, including decreased cognitive function and growth impairments. Theoretically, children who are in high-risk environments for worm infection and delayed growth have a high potential to have low intelligence. This study aimed to describe the nutritional status, worm infection, and intellectual ability of elementary school children in Jungkat Village, and to analyze the interrelationships between these factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in four elementary schools in Jungkat Village from June to August. A total sampling approach was applied, with 626 children aged 6–12 years who met the inclusion criteria (enrolled in the schools and obtained parental consent). Data were collected via anthropometric measurements, a worm infection questionnaire, and Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RPM), and analyzed using multinomial logistic regression. More than 70% of children had a normal nutritional status, but stunting (20.78%), overweight (7.67%), and obesity (7.67%) indicated a dual burden of malnutrition. The prevalence of worm infection is notably high (29.71%), while intellectual assessments indicate that 60.86% of children fall into the below-average or defective categories. Interestingly, children in Jungkat Village appear to adapt to worm infections, as these do not seem to impair intellectual capacity. Despite having a mostly normal nutritional status, many individuals still demonstrate below-average intellectual abilities, suggesting that other determinants, beyond nutrition and infection, may play a stronger role. Further studies are recommended to explore genetic, environmental, and educational factors that may influence children’s intellectual development.

Abstract

The elderly are a vulnerable group to the problem of gout. The 2018 Riskesdas data in Indonesia showed a 45% increase in age prevalence. The prevalence of gouty arthritis in Indonesia is high at 65-74 years (51.9%) and ≥ 75 years (54.8%). Maluku Province has a prevalence of 18.6-47.6 %. Diseased joints (pain consequence) are highest in the Aru Islands (9.63%), and Ambon is in the top position (2nd, 7.15%). Recorded data from Air Salobar Health Center, a health center in Ambon City, indicates that the number of elderly individuals with Gout in 2023 was 83 people. There are efforts made to improve the health of the elderly, including promotional efforts such as Support Groups, which employ an approach based on the Health Promotion Model (HPM) as a first step to promote healthy behaviors and desires among the elderly. Research objectives. This is a see-influence support group-based approach to a health promotion model for addressing problems in elderly health behavior related to gout. Design Study: This is a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The total sample in the study consisted of 83 elderly individuals suffering from Gout, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis employed the Wilcoxon test because the data were not normally distributed. Research results demonstrate a difference before and after the given support group intervention, based on the Health Promotion model, for improving elderly health behaviors. The pre-test results of the intervention are 9.33, while the post-test results are 11.27, with an average difference of 1.94 and a P-value of 0.000. Therefore, we can conclude that a support group has an influence on the approach of the Health Promotion Model towards improving behavioral health in the elderly with gout. Research on topics considered important and relevant to the problem of elderly individuals with gout recommends examining the factors and appropriate interventions to improve the quality of life for elderly people experiencing gout.

Abstract

The coverage of cervical cancer screening in Indonesia is 6.83% and in Maluku is 7.02% which is still low, even though affordable IVA examinations are available at health centers. Not knowing the risk of cervical cancer is one of the obstacles to low awareness of cervical cancer screening. Previous research has developed a valid and reliable SINARA instrument to detect cervical cancer risk. This study aims to develop and test the validity of the SINARA application, a smartphone application for detecting cervical cancer risk. This quantitative study uses the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Action) approach. The study was conducted from July to September. The research sample was 30 women of childbearing age in Ambon City, with a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out offline using questionnaires and online using Google Forms. This study produced the SINARA application with validity test results> 0.361 and a Cronbach alpha value of 0.935, and good quality through usability test results of 82.82%. A high-quality SINARA application is expected to help increase the participation of women in carrying out cervical cancer screening at health facilities. It is recommended to integrate this with the health office to identify women at risk of cervical cancer.

Abstract

The global shortage of healthcare professionals has intensified efforts to train more Community Health Workers (CHWs) to meet health and developmental needs. Amidst a global health crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic tragedy that occurred several years ago, CHWs have played a crucial role in controlling community-based outbreaks, thereby strengthening the public health emergency response while facing numerous challenges. This study explores the motivations and challenges CHWs face in managing health crises. Employing a descriptive phenomenological approach, this study conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 13 CHWs in Makassar City, selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis via the Colaizzi method. Thematic analysis revealed three main themes and seven sub-themes, encapsulating factors of social needs and expanded health perspectives as motivational elements alongside challenges such as the prevailing negative paradigm regarding the health crisis. CHWs are instrumental in spearheading community-based activities to manage health crises. CHW training programs, facilitated by community nurses, can significantly improve their performance and impact within the community.

Abstract

The presence of germs, including Tuberculosis germs, in the house is greatly influenced by home environmental factors and TB sufferers behavior. This research aim is to determine the influence of home environmental factors and behavior on the number of air germs in the tuberculosis patients house in Kupang City. This observational research was conducted with purposive sampling in 21 homes with 21 TB patients from 86 patients from 2 Community Health Centers in Kupang City, NTT, Indonesia. The number of air germs with MPN coliform examination is measured based on laboratory examination. The independent variables are the number of people sleeping in the same room, type of walls, type of floor, ventilation conditions, wearing masks in the house, drying mattresses/pillows, place to expel phlegm, type of cooking fuel, smokers, sunlight entering the bedroom, sunlight entering the room. Going out and passive smoking. The data collected was then analyzed using multiple regression, and result in the equation: Number of Air germs = -203,614 + 59,538Ventilation Conditions + 86,333Drying MattressPillows + 63,841Smoking + 83,515Mthr Light to Room. The model shows that 61% of the number of air germs in the Tuberculosis patient's house is influenced by ventilation conditions, the habit of drying cases and pillows, the ability to smoke, and sunlight entering the rooms of Tuberculosis sufferers. This regression model is suitable for predicting the number of room air germs, where the fewer ventilation conditions, the germ number will increase, so the less frequently drying mattresses and pillows can also impact increasing the number of air germs in the homes of Tuberculosis sufferers. The number of room germs will also increase with smoking behavior and lack of direct sunlight in the bedroom.

Abstract

Sexuality is considered a taboo topic by society, making it difficult to discuss openly. Parents typically provide minimal guidance, while teenagers frequently feel too embarrassed to ask questions. To overcome these barriers, a more engaging and accessible platform, such as a website dedicated to reproductive health, is necessary to help teenagers gain a better understanding of the topic. This study aims to analyze the influence of reproductive health education through website media on changes in adolescent knowledge and attitudes. This research is a quasi-experiment, a quantitative study. The research was conducted from March to November 2024. The respondents/subjects were 200 teenagers aged 15-18 years in Palangka Raya who owned a smartphone or laptop. The intervention group had an average knowledge score of 22.90, higher than the control group's score of 20.49. The Independent T-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating that education using the booklet was less effective in increasing knowledge compared to the website+booklet. Similarly, the intervention group's average attitude score was 127.67, higher than the control group's score of 122.08. The Independent T-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating that using only the booklet was less effective in improving attitudes compared to the combined website+booklet approach. Education on reproductive health delivered through a website and booklet is more effective at enhancing knowledge and attitude scores in adolescents than education provided solely through a booklet. Ensure that the digital platform is accessible to all adolescents, including those in remote areas.

Abstract

The dual-triple burden of malnutrition among adolescent girls in Indonesia is a significant issue, particularly in West Sulawesi Province. Majene Regency has the second highest prevalence of malnutrition in the country, with alarming statistics showing that adolescent girls are affected by stunting (31.5%), anemia (17.9%), Chronic Energy Deficiency (KEK) (22.4%), and obesity (18.9%). This study aims to explore strategies for preventing and managing malnutrition based on local wisdom and cultural practices. The methodology includes qualitative-descriptive research through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews with informants from four secondary schools in Majene District. Key informants include health service heads, nutrition officers, school principals, teachers, food vendors, parents, and female students. Their insights provide a comprehensive view of the challenges and potential solutions. The findings indicate several effective strategies: (1) changing mindsets about instant foods through education; (2) promoting healthy eating and local food consumption; (3) regular distribution of iron supplements in schools; (4) encouraging physical activity; (5) innovating healthy food services in school canteens; (6) revitalizing local government programs; and (7) securing funding through School Operational Assistance and Village funds to support these initiatives. In conclusion, there are several local wisdom-based strategies that can be implemented to address malnutrition among adolescent girls. It is suggested that the results of this research can be a valuable reference for local governments, educators, and various stakeholders who are committed to improving the nutritional-health status of adolescent girls.

Abstract

Leprosy is an infectious disease and can cause stigma from society. One thing that is important to do to reduce the stigma felt by leprosy sufferers is to obediently take medication. This study aims to determine the relationship between stigma and adherence to taking medication on covariate variables in leprosy patients in Bone Regency. This quantitative study uses an observational analytical approach and a cross-sectional study. The analysis used was multivariate analysis with a causality model. The number of samples in this study was 92 respondents, taken using simple random sampling. The results of this study show that stigma in leprosy patients in Bone Regency is significantly related (ORa = 1.022, 95% CI = 0.306-3.416) to adherence to taking medication, which means 1.022 times more likely to experience non-adherence in taking medication, controlling for gender and side effects of medication. There needs to be preventive efforts through early detection and health education related to leprosy given to patients, the patient's family, and the community, so that it can reduce the stigma experienced by patients and increase compliance with taking medication.
