Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases among the elderly, often leading to complications, dependency, and psychosocial burdens. Globally, over 20% of adults aged ≥65 years live with DM, and in Indonesia, its prevalence among the elderly reaches 19.2%. Despite this high burden, limited studies have addressed diabetes burnout (DB) in elderly patients, particularly within cultural contexts where family caregivers play a central role. This study aimed to explore the level of burnout in the elderly with DM and identify contributing factors. A descriptive-analytical quantitative design was applied involving 176 elderly DM patients registered in the Prolanis program at Semarang Regency Health Center, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Diabetes Burnout Syndrome (DBS) questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and logistic regression. Findings showed that most participants were female, had a high school education, and had lived with DM for less than five years. Gender and education had a significant influence on DBS scores (p < 0.005). Burnout was higher among women, patients with DM >5 years, and those with a bachelor’s degree. Education emerged as the most influential factor, with higher education levels associated with an 11.76-fold increased risk of burnout (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Education plays a dominant role in shaping burnout among the elderly with DM. Interventions tailored to demographic characteristics, disease duration, and employment status, supported by social support and health education, are crucial for reducing burnout and enhancing chronic care.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition in which the level of hemoglobin (Hb) in the body is below normal, caused by a lack of intake of the iron and protein the body needs. Anemia in young women can reduce the immune system's ability and learning achievement. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls worldwide ranges from 40% to 88%, and the prevalence of anemia in developing countries reaches around 57.3%. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, according to the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research, the prevalence of anemia among adolescents is 32%. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of adding sorghum flour and soybean flour on levels of iron, protein and the acceptability of cookies as an alternative snack to prevent anemia in young women. This type of research is a quasi-experimental research design with a Posttest Only Control Group Design. Tests for iron and protein levels were carried out at the Food Analysis Laboratory of the Jember State Polytechnic while the power tests were carried out on 28 grade 8 students at SMPN 1 Kalisat Jember. This research was conducted from February to April The results showed that as the proportion of added soy flour increased and the proportion of sorghum flour decreased, the average iron and protein levels increased. The highest mean values for iron and protein were found in treatment X3 with iron levels of 4.79 mg and protein levels of 14.89 g. The most preferred taste acceptance is in treatment X1 and X2 by 50% with a very favorable rating (SS). In conclusion, the addition of sorghum flour and soybean flour to cookies had a significant effect on the levels of iron and protein in cookies but did not have a significant difference on the acceptance of taste, color and texture of cookies.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has had a significant impact on various aspects of life, including child development, particularly for infants and toddlers. The use of gadgets such as smartphones, tablets, and televisions has become increasingly widespread, raising concerns about their effects on the motor and cognitive development of young children. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the duration of gadget use and motor and cognitive development in infants and toddlers aged 6 months to 5 years. The research method used is a descriptive, correlational, quantitative approach with purposive sampling, involving 150 parents of children who use gadgets. Data was collected through surveys and analyzed using Pearson correlation tests and simple linear regression. The results show a significant negative correlation between the duration of gadget use and motor development (-0.41) and cognitive development (-0.28). Children who used gadgets for longer periods showed delays in motor development, such as walking and crawling. However, the use of educational apps had a positive impact on cognitive development with a positive correlation (0.32). The study also found that age and gender did not have a significant effect on the relationship between gadget use and child development. This discussion suggests that parents should limit the duration of gadget use and prioritize physical and social activities for children to support optimal motor and cognitive development. Further research is needed to explore the impact of various types of applications on child development.

Abstract

Lawi-lawi seaweed (Caulerpa racemosa) contains fibre and antioxidants, which are the largest components that can inhibit blood clotting and reduce blood sugar levels by slowing the release of glucose into the blood. This study aimed to determine the effect of giving Lawi-lawi seaweed (Caulerpa racemosa) on the blood glucose levels of male Wistar strain Rattus norvegicus. This research is pure experimental research, using a posttest-only control group design. The sample consisted of 25 male white rats weighing 150-200 grams. All rats were coded and then induced with alloxan at a dose of 130 mg/kg BW, if the rat's blood glucose level was > 200 then the rat was said to be diabetic, then the rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, negative control, positive control, treatment 1 (1.87g), treatment 2 (3.75g) and treatment 3 (5.62g) groups. The results of the post hoc test on the average change in blood glucose levels of rats for 30 days of treatment generally showed a value of p = 0.000, where p <0.05 so that it could be interpreted that between the negative control group receiving standard feed treatment, the positive control group being given metformin, There were differences in changes in blood glucose levels in the treatment groups of seaweed at doses 1, 2 and 3 doses, meaning that there was an effect between the groups giving Lawi-lawi seaweed on reducing blood glucose levels of rats for 30 days of treatment.

Abstract

Postpartum hemorrhage remains a major global health problem and a leading cause of maternal mortality. Effective uterine involution, supported by uterine contractions and the hormone oxytocin, plays a crucial role in preventing hemorrhage. In addition to pharmacological methods, oxytocin stimulation can be achieved non-pharmacologically through oxytocin massage and nutritional support, such as the consumption of date fruit. These two interventions operate through distinct yet complementary mechanisms: neuroendocrine stimulation and metabolic nutritional support. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of date fruit consumption and oxytocin massage on uterine involution among postpartum mothers. A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design was used, with 30 postpartum mothers purposively selected and divided into two groups. The first group consumed 100 g of dates daily, while the second group received oxytocin massage once a day, both for seven days. The results showed that the average reduction in uterine fundal height was 10.47 cm in the date consumption group and 8.07 cm in the oxytocin massage group. An independent t-test confirmed that date consumption was more effective than oxytocin massage at accelerating the reduction in uterine fundal height (p=0.01). Although these findings are limited by the small sample size and purposive sampling method, clinically, both interventions show potential as feasible, low-cost, and culturally acceptable supportive strategies in postpartum care, particularly in resource-limited settings. Further studies with larger samples and more rigorous designs are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract

Cataract surgery in a day-care unit significantly reduces preoperative education time, posing a challenge for elderly patients with cognitive decline. Traditional lectures rely on nurse availability and verbal recall, necessitating a more standardized and sensory-engaging alternative. This study compared the effectiveness of audio-visual media versus traditional lectures on the Quality of Discharge Teaching (QTDS) and Readiness for Hospital Discharge (RHDS) in phacoemulsification patients. A quasi-experimental, post-test-only study was conducted at a tertiary referral hospital in August 2023. Using sequential sampling, 100 participants were allocated to either the lecture group (n=50) or the audio-visual group (n=50) based on a systematic time-based approach (odd-even surgery dates) to prevent cross-contamination. Data were collected through the validated Indonesian P-QTDS and P-RHDS questionnaires and analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. No significant difference was found in teaching quality (p=0.647), with both methods rated as satisfactory. However, the audio-visual group had a higher mean rank for discharge readiness (55.47) than the lecture group (45.53). Although approaching marginal significance (p=0.073), this reflects a clinically meaningful trend favoring the audio-visual intervention. The use of audio-visual media is recommended as the primary educational method to improve discharge readiness and ensure nursing standardization in high-volume day-care units.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is at risk of becoming one of the causes of poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Specific interventions to increase hemoglobin levels in anemic pregnant women may significantly influence maternal and fetal outcomes. Jember Regency is one area in East Java Province that is prioritized for reducing cases of poor maternal and fetal outcomes. This quantitative, analytical, and observational study used a cross-sectional design. The study population comprised third-trimester pregnant women from January to December 2022 in the Arjasa Health Center's working area, totaling 550 women. The sample size calculation yielded a sample of 115 third-trimester pregnant women by simple random sampling. The analysis test used in this study was the contingency coefficient test. Data collection used secondary data from the maternal and child health clinic register book, the pregnant women's cohort book, and the Arjasa Health Center laboratory examination book for 2022. The study results showed that the majority of respondents did not have a history of anemia, and those who did mostly had mild anemia (42.6%). The study revealed a correlation between anemia history in third-trimester pregnant women and maternal outcomes (p-value = 0.005, C = 0.291), categorized as a weak correlation, and low birth weight (p-value = 0.015, C = 0.220), also categorized as a weak correlation. The analysis of the history of anemia incidents in third-trimester pregnant women with the age of delivery and infant mortality did not show a significant correlation. Maternal anemia in third-trimester pregnant women is associated with a higher risk of poor maternal outcomes and low birth weight. Strengthening early anemia screening and adherence to iron–folic acid supplementation, integrated into maternal nutrition programs with robust referral systems, is essential to reduce adverse maternal outcomes and low birth weight in Jember Regency.

Abstract

Gentle birth is a birthing approach characterized by a calm, gentle, respectful, and courteous process that optimally utilizes the natural integration between body, mind, and spirit. Globally, the prevalence of gentle birth practices has increased in line with the growing demand for humanistic and minimally medical interventions in childbirth. Studies report that 20–40% of pregnancy care facilities in developed countries have adopted elements of gentle birth, such as relaxation techniques, emotional support, controlled breathing, minimal medical intervention, and a supportive birthing environment. In a gentle birth, the mother is directed to perceive pain as something that will help her to meet the baby. The aim of his study is to find out the relationship between the gentle birth delivery method and the level of labor pain in women giving birth at PMB Griya Sehat Balikpapan in 2024. Quantitative research with an analytical observational research type. The sampling method in this research was non-probability sampling using an accidental sampling technique with a sample size of 45 people plus 10% to account for sample dropout. This research uses cross-sectional study analysis techniques. The statistical test results of this study indicate a significant relationship between gentle birth methods (independent variable) and the level of labor pain (dependent variable) in women who gave birth at PMB Griya Sehat Balikpapan in 2024 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the application of gentle birth methods is associated with a decrease in pain levels during childbirth. It can be concluded that mothers who used the gentle delivery method during labor at PMB Griya Bunda experienced mild labor pain. Based on these findings, the gentle delivery method can be recommended as an alternative non-pharmacological strategy for managing labor pain in obstetric services.
