Abstract

Abstract

This research is an attempt to reveal the portrait of early twentieth century American women in Southern America in Williams’ plays The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire. There are three objectives of the research, namely the efforts of American women to survive after they cannot depend on others any longer, their basic reasons to do their efforts, and how they do the efforts in order to continue their lives. Using the literary sociology, the three objectives of the research are discussed in the two plays as the main sources and the criticisms and the social condition in America in the early twentieth century as the secondary sources. The result of the research shows that the early twentieth century American women in Southern America make some efforts in order to survive after the decline of Old South tradition. There are a lot of changes, including social and cultural values. They, however, cannot adapt themselves in the society and they still keep their old values. Consequently, they are not successful. By looking for men to become their husbands, they try to survive. They actually want to save their lives physically and economically, even though they want to keep their values.

Abstract

The history of America cannot be separated from squatting. When European people came to the eastern coast of America in 1600s, they had lived in the settlement that did not belong to them.  They did not stop living in the settlement, rather, they kept moving to the West to look for better life.  The discovery of gold in California made them move to the West although they underwent difficulties along their journey.  This study attempts to explore squatting in American culture in James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Prairie.  This research uses Cultural Studies method, in which literary, historical and sociological approaches are combined to analyse a certain phenomenon on a text.  History and sociology are used in the research because they complement the existing sources in the literature.  The data are mainly taken from James Fenimore Copper’s novel, namely, The Prairie.  The novel is used in the research as starting points to describe squatting, and then the development of it can be described in American Culture.  Other data are taken from film, magazines, newspapers and historical and sociological articles, as well as articles from American Studies Journal.  Based on the research, squatting emerges because the squatters do not have enough money to buy or to rent the land for their settlement.  Besides, the squatters usually assume that the land that belongs to Indians can be occupied or owned without having to pay it.

Abstract

This article examines the enduring relevance of Socrates' "Apology" and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail," highlighting their shared commitment to justice and ethical integrity despite the vast differences in their historical and socio-political contexts. Both texts employ powerful rhetorical strategies to advocate for truth and moral righteousness, challenging deeply ingrained societal injustices. Socrates, through his dialectical method, exposes the inconsistencies in his accusers' arguments, encouraging critical self-examination, while King, through logical reasoning and emotional appeals, compels his audience to confront the moral failings of their society. The thematic connections between the two works, particularly their emphasis on truth, moral integrity, and the courage to challenge unjust laws, underscore their timeless significance in the discourse on moral philosophy and social justice. By situating their arguments within broader ethical and intellectual traditions, both Socrates and King provide timeless models of ethical leadership and moral courage. Their works continue to resonate, offering profound insights into the ongoing struggle for a more just and equitable world, making their messages relevant for contemporary movements against injustice and oppression.

Abstract

This study examines the psychological struggles of Kya, the protagonist of Where the Crawdads Sing, focusing on her experience with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the defense mechanisms she employs to survive. As a child abandoned by her family and ostracized by society, Kya develops psychological responses shaped by isolation and trauma. Using psychological literary criticism, this study analyzes how PTSD symptoms manifest in Kya’s behavior, such as hypervigilance, emotional detachment, and avoidance. Additionally, it explores her defense mechanisms, including repression, denial, and intellectualization, as means of coping with her traumatic past. The findings suggest that Kya’s psychological struggles reflect a broader theme of resilience in the face of adversity. By examining her journey, this research highlights the impact of abandonment and societal rejection on mental health. This study contributes to the discussion of trauma representation in literature, emphasizing the intricate relationship between psychological defense mechanisms and survival.
