Abstract

This paper examines the basic sentence, the relative clause (called complex attributes inMandarin), the classification of relative clauses, subordinate clauses (sequence of complexattributes in Mandarin), a sentence containing a relative clause broad, and passive sentencescontaining relative clauses in Indonesian and their counterparts in Mandarin. This study looksmany similarities between Indonesian and Mandarin. Similarities and differences in the relativeclause (complex attributes) between the two languages.

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas kesaksian Sinclair Lewis tentang masalah sosial di Amerika di era 1920-an,sebagai suatu dasa warsa paling suram dalam sejarah Amerika, yakni mengenai dampak negatip darisukses industrialisasi di Amerika atau sukses bangsa Amerika di bidang materi. Kehidupan George F.Babbitt yang dramatis dalam novel Babbitt diambil sebagai pokok bahasan. Dengan menggunakanpendekatan interdispliner, kajian ini membahas novel Babbitt untuk menjelaskan masalah sosial diAmerika pada dasa warsa 1920-an beserta budaya bisnisnya. Babbitt, tokoh utama dalam novel ini,hanyalah seorang bisnis kelas menengah, yakni sebagai seorang pialang pada real estate yang menaruhperhatian utama lebih kepada keuntungan daripada kualitas bangunan, sedang motivasi utama dalamhidupnya adalah mencari uang, kekuasan dan status. Setelah bekerja keras ia menjadi kaya raya, namunironisnya keberhasilan tersebut telah menjadikan Babbitt dan keluarganya terlempar dalam kehidupanyang tragis. Dia menjadi terbiasa berselingkuh dengan wanita lain, sementara anak-anaknya, Ted danVerona, terseret dalam kehidupan berfoya-foya dengan para gadis modern. Kesuksesan telah mengubahgaya hidupnya, dia terperangkap dalam kehidupan yang materialistis, konsumtif dan hedonistis. Hasilpenelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa uang bukanlah satu-satunya hal yang bisa menjadikan orang bahagia.

Abstract

Delailah Tang Ingin Pulang dari Pesta is a drama that is able to read the events around him. Abstract

This paper is the result of the research in the area of the local wisdom of the Javanese society in theform of the Javanese (advice) speech. The contect of the research problem is the understanding ofthe Javanese (advice) speech which is understood as one of the Javanese local wisdoms in the formsof the moral messages in the Javanese society. The research method used in this research is thecombination between linguistic and anthropological methods (ethnolinguistics), specifically usingthe etnosign methodology. The results of this research are in the forms of the classification and thelinguistic expression categorization which can be stated as follows: (1) the conception of theJavanese about personal management, (2) the conception of the Javanese about World and Wordly,(3) the conception of the Javanese about family and society, (4) the conception of the Javaneseabout nations, (5) the concept about spiritual superiority, and (6) the conception of Javanese aboutthe belief/divinity. From the discussion of the Javanese (advice) speech, it needs to conduct thereinterpretation and the revitalization accurately about the ways of the Javanese thought in the pastand in the current society to intergrate the knowledge and cosmology which can be referred tounderstand the cultural problems.

This article discusses about Jpop (Japanese Popular Music). It explores englishization in JPop(Japanese Popular Music) in the light of recent theoretical development of sociocultural linguistic.This article also shows of englishization can refashions diction in a song lyrics, and draws attention tothe way that sociocultural becames a force to provoke such refashioning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the anthropological aspects of literature as seen on the side of the cultural elements of the Bajo tribe in the novel Mata dan Manusia Laut by Okky Madasari. This research is included in the type of literature research, while the research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis. The data is in the form of documents entitled Mata dan Manusia Laut. The theory used in this research is the theory of literary anthropology which is based on cultural elements. There are seven of the findings data based on Bajo cultural elements in the novel Mata and Manusia Laut, namely (1) Human Life Tools is 29 data, (2) 9 data about livelihood, (3) Social system with 14 data, (4) Language system is 3 data (5) 6 data of various types of art, (6) Knowledge system with 16 data and (7) Religion system with 24 data.

Abstract

This paper discusses the objectification of women in five Indonesian folklore, i.e. “Putri yang BerubahMenjadi Ular” (North Sumatra), “Putri Mambang Linau” (Riau), “Putri Tujuh” (Riau) , “Ning Rangda”(South Kalimantan), and “Dewi Luing Indung Bunga” (South Kalimantan). The discussion concernsthe explanation of the objectification of women and the objectification of women in the form of fiveIndonesian folklore that. In essence, objectification of women is triggered by the presence of apatriarchal culture that put men as sex first (first sex) and women as the second sex (second sex). Thishas implications for the positioning of men and women as active subjects as passive object. Theconstruction appearing and embedded in social and cultural life , and there are also in the literature.Oneof its example is in the folklore.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the social conflicts in the novel Tiba-tiba Malam by Putu Wijaya. The dataof this study was taken from the novel Tiba-tiba Malam by Putu Wijaya published in 2005 by CompassPublisher. Data collection was done by using literature method. This study used Geoerge Simmel andRalf Dahrendorf theory of conflict. The method used in this study is descriptive analysis. This studyaims to reveal the social conflicts between characters and the social conflicts between characters andthe villagers, the causes of conflicts and actions to resolve the conflicts. This research resulted in thefollowing. First, the emergence of conflict between Sunatha family and Utari family was motivated bypersonal issues, while the emergence of conflict between Sunatha family and the villagers wasmotivated by customs violations. Secondly, the causes of individual conflicts are the individualbehavior and the economy, while the cause of conflicts with the villagers is the strong kinship amongthe villagers. Thirdly, the action to solve the conflicts is to do a good communication between partiesin conflicts.

Abstract

Indonesia is rich of cultural heritage since it consists of more or less 34 provinces and every one ofwhich has its own characteristics which is different from others. It is a matter of fact that local colorprovides very valuable local wisdom which will determine the character building. Thus, theunderstanding of our own culture is really important to be wiser citizens. This article discusses aboutthe recent cultural phenomena in district election in which its candidates think that the use of languageartifact is applicable now days. This phenomena is also possible to happen in other places and itsupports the discussion of culture to be more fruitful.

Abstract

This paper discusses the influence of kaba “Malin Kundang" as a form of oral literature of the shortstory parody Minangkabau A.A. Navis entitled "Malin Kundang, Ibunya Durhaka" (“MKID”). Thediscussion carried out by using a genetic approach. Genetic approach examines how the work affectsthe work of others. Analysis conducted “MKID” illustrates that the short story as a parody of theaffected works of kaba "Malin Kundang" indicates a social critique of Navis toward modern society—especially the people within the scope of the author, the Minangkabau people—whom have beenuprooted from its cultural roots, so that in everyday life they become materialistic and overturning ofmoral values and religion. In pursuit of his passion, they perform a variety of "sedition" is sometimeshard to accept common sense. World upside down in a short story in which a “MKID” mother"disobey" her and "cheating" for his worldly needs, is a portrait of a sick society, unstable, and turnedupside down.
