Abstract

This article deals with Indonesian lexemic combination whose elements consisting of lexemes having antonymous meaning. By using data collected introspectively whose grammaticality and acceptability are tested with other Indonesian native speakers, it is found that the combinations are governed by three main principles, i.e. formal, semantic, and stylistic principles. The formal principle can further be classified into rhyming, phonological, and length principle. While, the semantic principle can be differentiated into marked, diametric and chronological, equity, idiomatic, and gender principle. Those principles seems to be hierarchical whose dominance has not been revealed in this research. Therefore, the more serious research concerning this matter is urgently needed.

Abstract

Tembilahan is the capital of the Indragiri Hilir regency in Riau and is nicknamed a worship city because of the Islamic influence brought by the ulama from South Borneo. Its community consists of various ethnic groups, such as Banjar, Malay, Buginese, Javanese, Minangkabau, and others, with the majority adherents of Islam. This diversity raises problems regarding the choice of language in the religious setting. This paper examines language choice patterns and the factors that determine the choice of languages. The data are drawn by using document analysis and the introspection method. The ethnography of communication approach was used to analyze the data. It reveals that five languages were used (Indonesian, Arabic, Banjar, Riau Malay Coastal dialect, and Javanese) by applying code-switching and code-mixing, thus forming nine patterns of language choice. The factors that determine the choice of those languages are ethnic and language background, the speaker's language competence, the speech's situation, and the speaker's purposes. The purposes of language choice are to emphasize, teach, respect, give an example, pray, quote Al-Quran and Hadith, praise Allah, quote others' statements, and humour. The conclusion is Banjar language is used as the dominant language. Even though there is still no found language use with a single variation in the Islamic sermons in Tembilahan, it shows that the Tembilahan community is classified as a multilingual society that can use more than one language.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the trend of products using religious commodities filled the economic market, which used "halal" diction. This study aims to answer several questions. Firstly how is the halal commodification process produced related to Wardah products? Second, how is the halal commodification process produced related to Wardah advertisements? The last is about the halal commodification process in which discourse and a "power" battle space occur. Systematization reproduced the specific knowledge. In contrast, variants are presented in specific ways. The research approach used is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection activities were carried out using the listening method and recording techniques to transcribe the data obtained. The data analysis process is carried out using the discourse theory proposed by Michel Foucault, using the genealogical method. The study results indicate that in the process of producing halal commodification related to halal products, all discourses that move in the Wardah production area are opposed to everything outside of Wardah. Besides, the openness of the power system process shows that these relations do not always dominate each other but instead play a role in strengthening the power of the halal products produced by Wardah. The results showed that when halal advertisements produced by Wardah were distributed to consumers (the public), they experienced several responses. Some people support halal advertisements, people reject halal advertisements, and neutral society towards halal advertising. This community response becomes data that is processed, selected, and sorted for reconstruction, intending to strengthen further the existence of Wardah formed by halal advertising. The relationship between Wardah, which produces the halal advertisements with other subjects outside, is interpreted as a space for the process of power to take place.

Abstract

The use of the Osing language in this area is still quite strong, and the pronunciation could be more precise. Even so, the people of this village still apply politeness in language when interacting with each other. This study aimed to find out the forms and language politeness strategies used by the Osing community in Macan Putih Village. This research method uses a qualitative research method with three stages: the stage of providing data, the stage of data analysis, and the stage of providing the results of data analysis. The research data is in utterances by speech participants associated with a context. The study results show that most of the Osing people in Macan Putih Village are polite in speaking, although some still violate it. The form of politeness in the language of the Osing community is based on markers of politeness verbally through speech and nonverbally through accompanying body gestures, as well as the politeness scale. There are two strategies namely positive politeness strategies such as (1) paying attention, (2) exaggerating in giving comments or praise, (3) using markers as members of the same group, (4) using jokes, and (5) giving questions or asking for reasons. The second strategy is the negative politeness strategy, namely (1) using indirect speech, (2) being pessimistic, and (3) minimizing coercion/pressure.

Abstract

Car Toons Compilation is an animated film by the YouTube channel First Toons which contains a compilation of episodes of Car Toons, including A Tow Truck, A Water Truck, and A Tractor. Car Toons tells a different story in each episode but still includes car elements. This study aims to discuss the semiotic understanding of the animated film by using Peirce's semiotic theory, especially icons, indexes, and symbols. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, which emphasizes the process of semiosis with the meaning of the relationship between signs or representamen in the elements of animated films and their benefits for children. The study results show that the animated films A Tow Truck, A Water Truck, and A Tractor have imaginary icons, namely visuals based on similarities to reality. The Tow Truck's indexicality as a saviour for a breaking car has a symbol of a towing tool that has a tip like a fishing hook on the back of the truck. The indexicality of the Water Truck is used to save alive whales even though they are on land. The blue object is a symbol of water. Tractor truck indexicality that agricultural land can be planted due to tractor services, its symbolism is that the animation of land with plants is agricultural land. Based on this discussion, the meaning of representamen provides benefits for children in the form of understanding the types of trucks and their uses.

Abstract

Flash fiction or what is better known in Indonesia as "mini fiction" or also "mini prose" is not a form of work that arises as a result of dealing with limited space today but also has something to do with the level of literacy at a certain time. It is not surprising that the publication of early prose in Indonesia, which at that time was still under colonial rule, namely in the mid-19th century, was essentially similar to the “fiksi mini” that has been developing in Indonesia in recent years. Thus, this paper is an attempt to straighten out and trace the dynamics of the flash fictions which have been published in Indonesia since more than a century ago. Because of this tracking will, reading of the flash fictions that have been published is a must. From the data obtained, several “fiksi mini” were used which were clearly able to confirm the existence of flash fictions which could be said to have been ahead of its time. Facts like this are results that are worth caring about considering that the present atmosphere has existed in the past. This kind of literary reality reaffirms the understanding that literary works in particular, whatever their form, have the power to enter the future unconsciously or not on purpose. In form, what happens is the tacit proclamation of a genre, for example, while in content it is usually concerned with some sort of natural forecast or prediction.

The data was collected from gathered information through the episode transcripts of the Bocah Ngapa(k) Ya video series, which were downloaded using YouTube Trans7 using the download-transcript-listen-record procedure from April to June 2019. The finding transcriptions were then described utilizing comparison, introspection, and pragmatic equivalent techniques. What linguistic components are crucial for producing the humour effect? How does the principle work? These are questions that the analysis is trying to address.
