Abstract

Fables become a medium of conveying moral values conveyed in the story. These values are helpful in the formation of children's character and can get used to having confidence in the value of kindness until the child grows up. Therefore, this study was conducted to study moral values in the fable. This research is qualitative research with an ethical approach. The data sources in the study were 18 fable stories taken from the page https://www.ebookanak.com/category/dongeng/kumpulan-dongeng-binatang-pilihan/. Eighteen of the fables are Gagak Ingin Jadi Angsa, Kaki yang Dibenci Rusa, Hadiah dari Burung Pipit, Tipu Daya Raja Biru, Harimau Bertopeng Rusa, Lolongan Si Guki Anjing, Suara Aneh dari Lapangan, Hewan Paling Beruntung, Jasa Lembu yang Terlupakan, Keberuntungan Katak Tuli, Mas Koki Tak Pernah Menyerah, Pulpen dan Kertas Ajaib Burung Merak, Hadiah Istimewa Serigala, Rubah Memperdaya Harimau, Tikus Penolong Gajah, Raja Bulan Penguasa Danau, and Kilauan Emas di Danau. The data in this study is a unit of story that contains the moral value of the fabled story. The data collection technique in this study uses a content analysis method, which looks for values contained in data in the form of fable text in electronic books. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, presentation, conclusion, and verification. From the research conducted, it can be concluded that of the eighteen fables, some moral values are conveyed implicitly, for example, from wrong actions shown by reply if someone commits moral deviations. Eight forms of moral values refer to the social relationship and relationship of beings with God, which include love for God and the environment, honesty, independence, respect and polite in the mind of language and behavior, confidence and hardworking, as well as generous and generous, kind and humble, and tolerant and harmonious.

Abstract

The myth of “Eyang Sapu Jagad” is an oral literature that lives in the people of Ubalan Hamlet and Maguan Village, Malang Regency, East Java. This myth is important for the people of the two regions because it is considered to have an influence on the social life of the community to this day. This study aims to describe the function and impact of myths on the lives of the people of the two regions. The research uses a descriptive-qualitative design with a sociology of literature approach. The data sources are informants from both regions, observation, notes, and documentation. Data were collected using recording, observation, documentation, interviewing and recording techniques. The results showed that the myth of “Eyang Sapu Jagad” had a strong influence on people's lives. For the people of Uba-lan Hamlet, myths function as a means of strengthening a sense of solidarity between community members, social control for community life, and promoting tourism, so that they have an impact on their social and spiritual life which is reflected in the act of imposing a container, ritual traditions of prayer, ethics live in society, and cultivate the community's economy. For the people of Maguan Village, myth serves as a means of strengthening a sense of solidarity among community members and a medium for education, so that it has an impact on their social and spiritual life which is represented through collective action to carry out petilasan, ritual traditions of prayer, yasinan and slametan on Friday Legi, as well as being guideline in community life.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discover The Portrayal of Merrick Rocha’s Loneliness in “Taken” by Kellie Maine using Psychological Approach. The loneliness issue and its impacts were able to be perceived by discovering the reasons and the impacts of loneliness. Qualitative research was held in this study. The result of this study showed that the writer could find four reasons of Merrick Rocha’s loneliness and three positive ways to reduce his loneliness inside Taken by Kelli Maine. Those four reasons behind Merrick Rocha’s loneliness are (1) Being Unattached, (2) Alienation, (3) Being Alone, and (4) Dislocation. For the ways or impacts of loneliness, this study found three positive impacts such as (1) Active Solitude, (2) Distraction by Spending Money, (3) Active Solitude. The negative one (4) Sad Passivity does not exist in the novel because Merrick Rocha’s loneliness

Abstract

Advertisements contain a variety of visual and verbal signs that have their own meaning. The study aims to investigate more about Multimodal Discourse Analysis related to Spider-Man movie posters. To this end, researchers conducted a review of the relation of visual and verbal signs with interactive participants (audiences) with nine (9) posters from the superhero movie "Spider-Man" which are taken from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Method of qualitative descriptive analysis are written in accordance with the Royce Intersemiotic Framework (2001). The findings show that in the "Spider-Man" movie poster there is a relationship which includes visual signs (visual contact, social distance, participation, power relation and modality) and verbal signs (mood and residue) to interactive participants. The conclusion that can be produced is that most of the posters with visual techniques and declarative modalities become a connector between images to the audiences. Such visual and verbal characterizations show that dramatic representations in posters easily touch the emotions of the audience. Eventually lead to the influence of actions on the audiences and imagining the character and storyline of the movies and attracts the audiences to watch it.

Abstract

Women as victims of sexist oppression is a global issue that needs attention from women around the world. This study covers three issues that relate to women as victims of sexist oppression. Those three issues are sexist oppression experienced by Rahima, solidarity gained by Rahima, and power exercised by Rahima in the novel entitled The Pearl That Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi. Through qualitative methods, the researcher analyzes and describes character’s utterances and narrations from the narrator that indicate the existence of sexist oppression, women's solidarity, and women's power. The results showed that Rahima was successful in exercising her power to end the sexist oppression she experienced.

Abstract

Movie becomes one of the increasingly popular media that has pragmatics phenomena. The existence of the phenomena is influenced by the involvement of speaker, interlocutor, and context as pragmatics elements. Through a pragmatic perspective, this descriptive qualitative research revealed the types of commissive acts in movie. This research took a 2022 movie entitled “Senior Year” as the data source. Data were all collected from commissive acts utterances uttered by all characters in the movie. The researcher collected data by implementing observational method with non-participatory technique. For the data analysis, the researcher analyzed by taking pragmatic identity method and pragmatic competence- in equalizing technique. Commissive acts theory discovered Searle and Vanderveken was used as the main theory to analyze data. As a result, this research confirmed that five commissive acts types were realized by the movie characters and there had 62 commissive utterances in total. 17 data were identified as accept, threaten and promise had nine data for each type, 16 data were found in offer, and refuse got 11 data. Dominant type belonged to accept as the characters frequently committed themselves to accept the offer of future action from other characters.

Abstract

This study discusses idioms in the Kerinci language which aims to see the form of each idiom found, as well as the translation of the meaning contained in each idiom, then find the syntactic structure found. The method used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach. The data were collected by interview technique, the researcher listened and recorded the results of direct interviews with native Kerinci speakers, then analyzed the data using Chaer's theory regarding the categorization of idioms based on the closeness of meaning. The results show that in the Kerinci language, there are 2 categories of idiomatic compound words, namely full idioms found in as many as 14 data such as gulou tika and bio donkey, partial idioms found in as many as 31 data, for example, seko imau and behek butt. The syntactic structure found in the data shows that Kerinci idioms are in the form of adjective phrases, verbs, and nouns and are in the form of complete clauses.

Abstract

. Every speaker should comprehend deixis to enhance the quality of communication with the interlocutor. This study investigates kinds of deixis and their references found in Madurese Culinary Writings. The data source of the study is the students’ Madurese Culinary Writings. It utilizes a qualitative research design. The data are gathered through observation and document review. During the data collection process, field notes are also used. The data are analyzed using an interactive model of data analysis, which includes data reduction, data display, and data verification/claim. The study's findings demonstrate that all types of deixes are found in Madurese Culinary Writings. Person deixis becomes the most frequent type of deixis including all data found, it has 70 data. The next position provides that place deixis is in the second position having 31 data. Then, discourse deixis has 21 data and time deixis has 13 data, and the lowest frequent type of deixis is social deixis having 6 data. Besides, the references found in this research: person deixes found are “I”, “we”, “us”, “my” as first person deixes; “You” as second person deixis; “They”, “it” as third person deixes which belong to person deixes; Place deixes found are “Serpang”, “Bangkalan”, “Arosbaya”; Time deixes found are “then”, “after”, “for 3-4 hours” ; discourse deixes found were “this”, “that”; and the last, social deixes found are “the seller”, ”my parents”.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to describe how the students use their preferred learning styles and investigate the students’ reasons for using their preferred learning styles in Post-Intermediate Speaking class. The first finding showed that the communicative and concrete learning style was used by 17 students, the concrete learning style was used by 9 students, the analytical learning style was used by 3 students, communicative and analytical learning style was used by 1 student. The second finding showed that the students who applied communicative and concrete learning style felt convenient being active-independent persons, matched with the way they learn, liked to learn speaking by using social learning approach, enjoyed of using concrete learning style because they belonged to active-dependent persons, liked reading and answering comprehension questions; the students who applied concrete learning style felt enjoy being active-dependent persons, liked to watch English program on TV, liked to learn English by playing games, liked learning new words by putting them into sentences, liked reading and answering comprehension questions, liked trying to say things in different ways when they do not understand the first time, liked reading books with pictures; the students who applied analytical learning style liked correcting their own mistakes, liked thinking of better ways to learn English, liked copying words and sentences from a book, liked working on problems given by the lecturer, liked learning the function of different expressions, liked reading the English newspaper; the students who applied communicative and analytical learning style liked to learn speaking in real life situation and condition, liked working in groups in the classroom, liked correcting their own mistakes and liked working on problems given by the lecturer.

Abstract

Currently the importance of Intercultural understanding has no doubted. People can not resist the existence of world Englishes or English as international language which require not only the ability to use English language but also to use English language respectfully across culture. To achieve those goals, the intercultural understanding is highly needed. One of the ways that can be done to gain intercultural understanding is through reading fairy tales. The aim of this study is to investigate and analyze the possibility to use fairy tales for fostering young learners’ intercultural understanding. It employed qualitative descriptive method and comparative literature to analyze the data. The data used Celtic, Japanese, Indian, and Indonesian fairy tales that have the same theme then it compared to pointing out the cultural aspects. The finding revealed that despite the similarities in the plots, the fairy tales from various countries depicted the differences in cultural aspect. Thus, can be inferred that the fairy tales can be an option as a vehicle to build young learners’ intercultural understanding
