Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to find the types of politeness strategies used by English teachers during the learning process. Design/methodology/approach- This study uses a qualitative research method with ethnographic communication design to find politeness strategies in speech used by English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Prambon. Research data were taken through observation and interviews. Researchers used a coding scheme to analyze the data that has been obtained. Findings/results – It was found 134 teacher utterances, classified according to politeness strategies that were applied during the English learning process. Of the 134 teacher utterances, there are 35 utterances categorized as positive politeness strategies, 8 utterances as negative politeness strategies, 69 as bald on-record politeness strategies, and 22 utterances as off-record politeness strategies. In other words, the bald on-record strategy is the dominant politeness strategy used by English teachers during the learning process. Thus, the politeness strategies used by teachers are influenced by certain conditions and situations in the classroom. Originality/value - Politeness strategy is a very crucial thing which needs to be considered in its use based on the appropriate conditions and situations, especially by the teacher as an example or role model for his students is not the case in the delivery of subject matter but also attitude or speech. Abstract

Purpose - The purpose of this study was to find out what strategies EFL students used to developvocabulary through personalized reading materials. In addition, this study was also conducted to findout how Free Voluntary Reading help students develop their vocabulary as EFL. Design/methodology/approach - This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design in answeringthe research questions. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews to the students of EFL class of 2019and 2020 in the English Language Education Department. There were 11 students (22,4%) who wereinterviewed in this research. Findings/results – The results showed that the strategies used by EFL students were as follows: readingauthentic materials, choosing reading materials according to genres, making notes about newvocabulary, and always looking for any content with English subtitles. In addition, the researcher alsofound out how several forms of Free Voluntary Reading helped the vocabulary development of EFLstudents. Originality/value - Free Voluntary Reading has an important influence on EFL students, especially indeveloping vocabulary. Paper type – Research paper

Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to analyze and present the potential for Arabic language development through education in Boarding Schools and the challenges faced in the current era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. Design/methodology/approach – The technique of analyzing research data is carried out through several stages, namely: processing and preparing data, classifying data, reading all the data that has been obtained, analyzing the special potential of Boarding Schools for Arabic language development, and identifying challenges faced by Islamic boarding schools in developing Arabic, as well as clarifying and drawing conclusions on the results of the analysis obtained. Findings/results – The results showed that the potential of Boarding Schools in developing Arabic at least consisted of academic and professional potential, technology, religiosity, politics, and economics. In developing the existing potential, Islamic boarding schools are faced with the challenge of making students master communicative Arabic and technology. Originality/value - This research further describes in more detail the potential and challenges of developing Arabic in Islamic boarding schools. so that the understanding and knowledge gained are deeper and more comprehensive. Considering the Arabic language reaps many problems and challenges and makes Arabic an interesting study to study at this time. Paper type – Conceptual paper

Abstract

Purpose - The objectives of this research are to find out the methods used by Indonesian students in acquiring their English proficiency and to recognize the challenges and strategies of Indonesian student in acquiring their English proficiency in foreign country. Design/methodology/approach - The research methodology used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The techniques of collecting data were interview, documentation, and audiovisual and digital materials to gather the data. The subjects of this research were kindergarten students in Tahsin for Kids Madania Foundation in Australia. Findings/results – The writer concluded that most of Indonesian students who live in foreign country used English as their second language. While the challenges of acquiring English are flip translation, teaching suitable and correct English, learning English from Indonesian parents, preparing the parents and children before enrolling kindergarten, and child speech delay. Originality/value - There are a lot of method used by indonesia students in acquiring English, it given by their closer environment such as family at home, teachers and friends at school. Abstract

Purpose- This research has the purpose to meaning is the application and influence of the My Happy Route game-based learning media in learning Arabic for class VIII students at MTs Al-Mas'udy. Design/methodology/approach- This study uses a pre-experimental design type of research in the form of one group pretest-posttest design so that it does not use the control class, only uses the experimental class. Findings/results – There is a significant effect before and after the implementation of the My Happy Route game media, which is 19%. Previously, the average student score was 67.03, but it increased to 86.71. Originality/value - As a teacher who is always required to be creative, this media is very good to use in teaching and learning activities, both indoor and outdoor. Paper type – Research paper
