Abstract

This study reviews the hedging phenomena in Japanese speech found in street interview Ask Japanese. The hedging can be seen in interviewees’ answers to the interviewer’s questions. The data source used in this study is videos uploaded to Youtube by channel Ask Japanese. There are, in total, two videos of interview that is analyzed. The theories used are hedging as semantic phenomenon and hedging as pragmatic phenomenon. This research employs qualitative method that is involving analyzing data that have been transcribed and codified beforehand. In the videos used, there are 234 cases of hedging found. After keen observation, it is revealed that those cases of hedging are not realized in the same way. They can be classified into 6 types of strategies according to their realization in speech, namely (i) hedging by emphasizing subjectivity, (ii) hedging by expressing uncertainty, (iii) hedging by creating common ground, (iv) hedging by approximation, (v) hedging by exemplification, and (vi) hedging by downtoning.

Abstract

The story of Ubasute is an allegory presented in fiction regarding the neglect of the elderly in Japanese society. A modern variation of this story is shown in the film Plan 75, which focuses on a euthanasia program for seniors aged 75 to reduce the country's economic burden. This article examines the Ubasute narrative presented in the film Plan 75 from ageism perspective. Research data collection was carried out using the listening and note-taking methods. The descriptive analysis method is used at the data analysis stage. The results of data analysis are presented using descriptive methods. The results of the study show that the Ubasute narrative in the film Plan 75 is presented as follows: 1) Elderly people feel confused about their position in society; 2) The elderly feel embarrassed because they are a burden on their family and society; and 3) The elderly need the support of the younger generation. The Ubasute narrative shown in Plan 75 can be a medium to combat ageism, towards the elderly. The Plan 75 makes us rethink the position of the elderly in society. The elderly are not "things" whose value decreases when their productivity decreases.

Abstract

In the Japanese drama titled Nihon Chinbotsu: Kibo no Hito, Japan experienced a major disaster in the form of the sinking of the Kanto region into the ocean. From this disaster, Japan lost land, so its citizens had to be transferred to other countries. Japan is negotiating with various countries to transfer Japanese citizens through the immigration process. This article discusses Japan’s intercultural negotiations with China, the United States, and Australia. The Content Analysis method is used to interpret the film’s content related to Japan's intercultural negotiations with these three countries. By using the theory of Intercultural Communication, this study tries to describe the “cultural context” and values that underlie Japan’s intercultural negotiation process; and analyzes its influence on the negotiation process. From the results of a thorough analysis of the components in the drama, It can be concluded that “cultural context” plays an important role in the negotiation process, and this context is closely related to the distinction between high-context culture and low-context culture. Both high-context and low-context cultures show prominent basic values, which also influence the intercultural negotiation process. These values are (1) collectivism and individualism; (2) the level of intimacy of the relationship between Eastern and Western cultures, which includes uchi-soto, power distance in the social hierarchy, and reciprocal relations; (3) reciprocation (on’gaeshi); which overall affects the negotiation process. In addition, from the analysis, it is concluded that Japan and China have similar values, while the United States has similar values to Australia.
