Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the issue of black companies (buraku geisha) in two Japanese films: Burakku Gaisha ni Tsutometerundaga, Mou Ore wa Genkai Kamoshirenai (2009), and Chotto Ima Kara Shigoto wo Yamete Kuru (2017). Black companies are a social problem in Japanese society, where many companies exploit their employees by forcing them to work excessive hours for low wages. This has become a serious issue, leading to the phenomenon of karoshi, or death because of overwork. The research analyzes how the two films portray the black company issue and the perspectives of the characters in these films towards it.  This research also examines how Japanese society responds to the problem as depicted in the films. This qualitative research employs a combined approach of sociological literary and reader-response perspectives, focusing on the societal aspects of the film by examining the discourses related to social problems and the social itself. The result based on that analysis of the films and the application of the two perspectives shows that the characters’ views provide a reflective portrayal of the social issues currently faced by Japanese society

Abstract

This paper examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has implications for the formation of Japanese teachers' skills related to digitalisation, as well as how the teaching and learning situation in Japan has changed as a result. The COVID-19 pandemic has indirectly forced teachers in Japan to adapt and change their teaching methods to students. Discussions on teacher certification and training in Japan, digitization of education in Japan, and the formation of teacher skills in Japan before and after the COVID-19 pandemic are used to explain how digitization was already introduced in education in Japan but was only massively implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study found that current teacher skills in Japan have undergone some changes in standards. The introduction of digitalization in education in Japan as well as the COVID-19 pandemic that entered Japan in 2020 indirectly changed the teaching standards of teachers in Japan. Nowadays, teachers in Japan are not only required to be proficient in teaching but also to act as practitioners in their teaching environment, thus indirectly changing the teaching and learning process in Japan.

Abstract

This study is intended to determine how the embodiment of the value of on, gimu, and giri in the characters Frieren and Heiter in the anime Sousou no Frieren by Kanehito Yamada. The author uses descriptive qualitative method. This research design uses literary anthropology, which leads to literary text research that examines literary reflections as cultural reflections.  The data source was taken from Muse Indonesia's Youtube channel video entitled "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" on episode 1-2. Frieren receives more on, giri, and gimu than Heiter because Frieren does not understand the concept of gratitude. She has a cold personality and lacks the ability to understand how quickly time passes for humans. After understanding the concept, Frieren tried to repay the debt of gratitude she had not been able to do. Frieren is able to pay his debt or giri in a timely manner. Heiter understood the concept of on so he did not carry as much of the burden of the values of on, giri and gimu as Frieren. Frieren and Heiter both carried the gimu ko to Himmel. Heiter managed to complete his gimu because he really took care of Fern until the end of his life. Frieren, on the other hand, had done her gimu and continued her gimu as part of her life principles. It can be concluded through this anime, Japan still maintains the moral concepts of on, giri and gimu.

Abstract

Lifestyle is a set of behaviours that are meaningful to the individual and others at a particular time and place, including social relationships, consumption of goods, entertainment, and clothing. Minimalism is the act of reducing things to make room for the more important things in life. A minimalist lifestyle is influenced by a consumptive lifestyle by reducing the items owned. Japanese minimalism has a rich history and is linked to cultural and philosophical traditions. A minimalist lifestyle is characterised by anti-consumerist attitudes and behaviours. A minimalist lifestyle offers many wellbeing benefits, including happiness, life satisfaction, meaning, and better personal relationships. Practising a minimalist lifestyle can be manifested by problem-avoiding behaviours, being content with enough possessions, and thinking carefully before making new purchases. The benefits of living a minimalist lifestyle range from environmental sustainability to mental health. This research aims to understand how Fumio Sasaki represents Japanese culture through the theme of minimalism and identify the Japanese cultural values reflected in this book with a qualitative method by thoroughly describing the data obtained during the research process. This research uses a literature approach by referring to theories obtained from literature in the form of books and journals as the main source and the literature.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representations of uchi and soto in the textbook Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture Intermediate 1 B1 recommended by The Japan Foundation using the context and deixis theory approach by (Levinson, 1983; Stassler, 1982). Also, the social deixis of Japanese is explained (Wetzel, 2011). Qualitative descriptive method is used for the presentation of data analysis. The results of this study found that the concepts of uchi and soto in Japanese society are closely related to the social deixis of Japanese. In the analysis it was found that social deixis is also closely related to the use of keigo (expression of respect) as well as the phrase yarimorai (give and take). The close relationship between social deixis and the concepts of uchi and soto illustrates the structural order of Japanese society's life which pays close attention to the position and social status of society when interacting and communicating with each other. By choosing the diction of the words used between the speaker and the interlocutor when communicating, it can be assessed whether both of them belong to the uchi or soto class. The results of this study also at the same time prove the statement of (Wetzel 2011). Marugoto's textbook: Japanese Language and Culture Intermediate 1 B1 presents an explanation of the use and context of how Japanese is actually used by the people by showing the concepts of uchi and soto

Abstract

This research aims to describe the meaning of the lyrics of the song "Phony 「フォニイ」" by Tsumiki sung by KAFU which was released on June 5, 2021. This research is classified as qualitative research. The theory used is Rifattere's heuristic and hermeneutic reading theory. Based on the reading process through heuristic reading, hermeunistic reading, matrix, model, variant, and hypogram, the following results can be found; In the heuristic reading, the meaning of the lyrics of the song "Phony 「フォニイ」" Based on the heuristic reading, the song "Phony 「フォニイ」" is about a person who lives in a world full of falsehood with a fake flower parable. By living in a fake world, he is forced to live as a fake person until he loses his identity. His fake life slowly makes him feel hopeless and lose his happiness. In hermeunetics, there is a lack of continuity of expression in the form of substitution of meaning in the form of metaphor and simile. In the second stage of reading identification, the matrix in the lyrics of the song "Phony 「フォニイ」" is "fake happiness". The character in the song conveys that he cannot freely obtain sincere love or happiness. The model in the song lyrics is the depiction of fake happiness in the world with the metaphorical device「造花」zouka. The variants in the song are (1) a lie, (2) a world of antipathy, and (3) a fake. Based on the research results, the meaning of this song is someone who pretends to be happy.
