Abstract

ABSTRAK Pengajaran keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris merupakan bagian dari pengajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Kedua di Indonesia. Hal tersebut menarik karena terdapat kesulitan dalam memahami kosakata yang terkandung di dalam bacaan sebelum mengambil pesan dan menjawab pertanyaan terkait dengan bacaan. Pemahaman bacaan menjadi semakin sulit saat kosakata tersebut tidak lazim dijumpai, seperti kosakata dalam bidang teknologi atau karya sastra. Namun demikian, dalam pengajaran keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris, Ackerman (1994) menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan karya sastra membuat peserta didik terlibat secara emosional dalam kisah yang mereka baca. Selain menarik, karya sastra kaya akan materi pembelajaran dan berisi pengalaman yang memberi nilai lebih pada proses pembelajaran (Goshn, 2002), misalnya pada karya sastra anak dalam bentuk realisme, fiksi, non fiksi, fantasi, karya sastra tradisional dan puisi (Brown, 2001). Karya sastra tradisional sendiri adalah cerita yang ditulis berdasarkan tradisi, yang waktu kejadian bahkan penulisnya pun tidak diketahui karena diceritakan dari mulut ke mulut dan dari generasi ke generasi. Misalnya, cerita rakyat, fabel, mitos, legenda, epik dan puisi tradisional (Burhan, 2003). Karya sastra tradisional berupa mitos kami gunakan untuk mengajarkan keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris kepada siswa-siswi SMK Jayawisata, Kelas XII, yang setelah lulus      akan terjun dalam bidang pariwisata atau melanjutkan pendidikan ke jenjang yang lebih tinggi. Hal ini penting    untuk dilakukan karena salah satu hal yang akan mereka lakukan dalam bidang pariwisata adalah melakukan pendampingan pada wisatawan yang membutuhkan informasi yang berkaitan dengan folklore yang terdapat pada tujuan wisata yang mereka datangi. Selain memperoleh keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris mereka juga mendapatkan pengetahuan tambahan mengenai folklore yang terdapat di dalam bacaan. Kata Kunci: Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Kedua, keterampilan membaca teks berbahasa Inggris, folklore, folklore-based reading.         ABSTRACT Teaching English Reading Skill is part of Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) in Indonesia. It becomes interesting as students face difficulties in understanding new vocabularies before gaining the message of the text and answer questions related to the text. The reading comprehension becomes more difficult when those vocabularies     are unfamiliar for them, like terms related to technology or literature. However, in Teaching English Reading Skill for beginners, Ackerman (1994) shows that literature enables students to get involved emotionally in the story they read. Literature is interesting, rich-content and shares life experience for the learning process (Goshn, 2002). The literature comes in various types like realism, fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, traditional literature and poem (Brown, 2001). Traditional literature is a tradition-based written story where the time and even the writer are unknown as it was told from mouth to mouth and from generation to generation. For example, folktale, fabel, myth, legend, epic and traditional poem (Burhan, 2003). Traditional literature of myth is used to teach Basic Level English Reading Skill     to students of tourism vocational highschool Jayawisata, particularly to twelve grade students, who are going to work in tourism sector after graduated or continue their study to higher level. It is done since one of their duties is guiding foreign tourists who need information about the folklore of the tourism sites they visit. Therefore, they are not only improving their English Reading Skill but also gaining more information about the folklore in the text. Keywords: Teaching English as Second Language (TESL), English Reading Skill, folklore, folklore-based reading.

Abstract

Paper ini membahas tentang penerjemahan teks booklet promosi museum Ranggawarsita Semarang dengan menerapkan dua metode penerjemahan yaitu, Penerjemahan Kata Per Kata (Word-for-word Translation) dan Penerjemahan Harfiah (Literal Translation). Penerapan metode-metode penerjemahan tersebut bertujuan untuk menghasilkan teks terjemahan yang dapat menyampaikan pesan penulis bahasa sumber kepada pembaca dalam bahasa sasaran secara tepat. Hasil penerapan dua metode penerjemahan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa teks booklet dalam versi bahasa Indonesia yang telah diterjemahkan dalam versi bahasa Inggris memiliki kemiripan struktur tata bahasa sumber dengan beberapa penyesuaian, sehingga akan lebih mudah dibaca dan dipahami oleh pembaca bahasa sasaran khususnya wisatawan asing.Kata kunci: penerjemahan, booklet, metode penerjemahan

Abstract

Students in language classes are sometimes reluctant to be active. This condition can be a problem for teachers because in learning languages students are supposed to be actively involved and they even enjoy the activities. This paper aims at exploring some teaching and learning strategies and enjoyable activities that teachers may use in their classes so that students in the class are provoked to be involved in and enjoy the activities in their classes. To discuss this matter the writer has collected some references from books and journals on the matter. The discussion will cover teaching methods and strategic activities or techniques that teachers may find them useful to cater for such problems. By considering such methods and startegies it is hoped that the students of language classes will have enjoyable activities in their class and they will have a better achievement in their learning processes. Key words: teaching and learning strategies, enjoyable activities, language classes

Abstract

ABSTRAK Artikel ini berdasarkan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang ditujukan kepada siswa “SMK Jayawisata” Semarang berupa pelatihan penulisan berbasis folklor dalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari pelatihan ini adalah membekali siswa SMK Jayawisata Semarang dengan kecakapan menulis promosi wisata berbasis folklor dalam bahasa Inggris. Pelatihan dibagi dalam dua tahap, yaitu tahap teori yang dilanjutkan dengan tahap praktek penulisan berbasis folklor. Antusiasme siswa SMK Jayawisata dalam mengikuti pelatihan ini mengindikasikan manfaat pelatihan ini sebagai bekal praktis bagi mereka. Simpulan yang dapat ditarik adalah perlunya berbagai pelatihan praktis dalam bahasa Inggris untuk membekali siswa SMK agar siap dalam dunia kerja nantinya.Kata kunci :  penulisan, folklor, bahasa Inggris, promosi wisata ABSTRACT This article is based on a community service to the students of “SMK Jayawisata” Semarang in the form of English training concerning folklore-based writing. The purpose of this training is to supplement the students of “SMK Jayawisata” Semarang with the skill of writing tourism promotion based on folklore in English. The training is divided into two stages, namely the theory stage followed by the folklore-based writing practice stage. The enthusiasm of the students of “SMK Jayawisata” in participating in this training indicates the benefits of this training as a practical supplement for them. The conclusion that can be drawn is that there is a need for various practical training in English to supplement the vocational school students to be ready in the world of work later. Abstract

Japanese Caligraphy – Shodo, is a work of art that expresses the beauty of kanji characters on paper by writing using brushstrokes. The art of calligraphy is popular in Japan from elementary school children to the elderly and already widespread in the world. The tools used during shodo include shitajiki, bunchin, suzuri, sumi, and fude. At the beginning of  shodo, one must pay attention to his posture and hand to get good results. It is strongly advised so that the result can be as good as it is written with Japanese brush/fude. There are some various kinds of Japanese shodo, such as kaishou, gyousho, shousho. Usually shodo can be seen in some Japanese traditional events, such as Japanese wedding ceremony, Japanese tea ceremony room, in houses during new year, etc.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Sebagai salah satu bahasa Internasional, bahasa Inggris memiliki peranan sangat penting dalam pengembangan pariwisata.Pentingnya bahasa Inggris ini dirasakan tidak hanya oleh para pelaku pariwisata, tetapi juga oleh para anggota kepolisian di Polrestabes Semarang yang bertugas di bidang pariwisata (tourism police) atau di bidang yang menangani persoalan terkait dengan wisatawan asing. Tulisan ini membahas model pengajaran bahasa Inggris pariwisata kepada para anggota kepolisian di Polrestabes Semarang. Untuk melaksanakan kegiatan ini dlakukan beberapa tahapan, yakni pemberian pre-testdan kuesioner, untuk menjaring data terkait dengan kebutuhan peserta dan tingkat kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka, pelaksanaan pelatihan dengan tiga metode pengajaran, yakni metode ceramah, diskusi kelompok kecil, dan role play, serta pemberian post-test. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa penggabungan metode ceramah, diskusi kelompok kecil, dan role play cukup efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris lisan para peserta pelatihan. Hal ini dibuktikan melalui rerata peningkatan nilai post test dibanding dengan nilai pre-test sebesar 20 persen. Kata kunci: model pengajaran, tourism English, kepolisian  ABSTRACTAs one of the International languages, English has a very important role in the development of tourism. The importance of English is not only experienced by those involved in the tourism sector, but also by police members at the police office of Semarang city(Polrestabes Semarang)who serveas tourism office,or who often handle the issues related to foreign tourists. This paper discusses the model of teaching English for tourism to members of Polrestabes Semarang. There are three steps of doing the English training. First, the participants were given a pre-test and a questioner, which is aimed to get the data related to their English needs and competence. Next, the participants were given an English training, using 3 teaching methods: lecture, small group discussion, and role play. Next, the participants were given a post-test. The results of the analysis show that combining lecture methods, small group discussions, and role plays is effective in improving the spoken English skills of the trainees. This is evidenced through the average increase in the post-test score compared with the pre-test score of 20 percent.Keywords: teaching model, tourism, English, police.

Abstract

One of the Japanese work culture that is widely applied in many countries is 5S (Seiri, Seiton, Siso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke ). 5S not only practice in company activity but also in life activity. In company especially at manufacturing industry, 5S practice will produce qualified product. Although 5S culture easy to understand and simple, but it is need a consistency and very difficult to be applied. Therefore, practice of 5S especially 5S habituations not only practice in company but also in many educational institution for example school, university and orphanage.

Abstract

This service’s activity to society aims to find out introduce the art of Japanese flower arrangement (ikebana)and how to make ikebana to the mothers of nursing homes for Wening Wardhoyo. Through this activity, it is expected that nursing home residents Wening Wardhoyo can find out the types of ikebana and how to make them. This service’s activity to societyactivities in the form of training were attended by around 35 participants. The following is the sequence of activities: 1) dividing participants into groups and accompanied by a companion; 2) see a video that shows how to make the Ikebana; 3) distributing flowers, materials and equipment needed; and 4) The companion starts the activity by soaking the oasis as a medium to plant flowers. Then cut flowers at the request of participants; 5) The flowers that have been cut, are then assembled and plugged in by the participants alternately and the participants create according to their own desires. From this activity nursing home residents have activities in their spare time and training activities to make ikebana will grow new memories in their old age. Moreover, the participants could feel happy because even though they were in a nursing home in their old age there were still people who loved and cared for their existence.Keywords:ikebana, nursing home, wening wardhoyo, oasis

Abstract

This contribution to society activity’s (KKN) is about Japanese quick count style in Mathematics. The object of this activity is students of Elementary School in Karanggondang village, Mlonggo District, Jepara Regency. This activity is supported by LPPM, lecturer of KKN, and students of KKN. To run this programme, the KKN team is partnered with Karanggondang Elementary school. As a preparation for national exam, this programme is aimed at the students of 5th grade. The output of this activity are video and module.

This contribution to society event (PKM)’s theme is about making bentou. The object are children of GKI. This event is supported by the PKM team and GKI as a partner. This event has given a lot of contributions besides the skill of making bentou. The other contributions are improving children’s creativity, improving soft skill, and also improving children meticulous, etc. The output of this event is bentou as a product.
