Abstract

This study talks about the use of authentic material to increase student ability in reading. The research method uses classroom action research. It conducted to the students of IAIN sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten. Based on the data, the research resulted that the use of authentic material can increase student reading ability. It can be seen from the range of percentage from the first cycle and second cycle. The students also hold positive attitude toward the use of authentic material in reading class. The data shows that the student tends to choose agree and strongly agree. But, the use of authentic material is also needs appropriate technique, method and strategy to support them. Abstract

Upin and Ipin is a Malaysian television series of animated short produced by Les’ Copaque Production Sdn. Bhd, which features the life and advantures of the eponymous twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian kampong. This paper is a pragmatics study that aims an investigating conversational implicature in Malaysian television series ‘Upin and Ipin’, mainly used H.P Grice’s theory of conversational implicature. The episodes 5 has chosen as the sample in this study. The writer has found that the implicature occured for 66 times of 113 utterances. This study used qualitative method as the methodology. Based on the Grice’s theory of conversational implicature, implicatures arise from interaction of the following three factors (1) The proposition actually expressed in the utterance, (2) Possibly certain features of the context, and (3) The assumption that the speaker is obeying the rules of conversation to the best of their ability. This study conclude that various types of implicatures were used in Malaysian television series ‘Upin and Ipin’ episode 5.

Abstract

Multimodality is a theory of communication and social semiotics. Multimodality is a term widely discussed by linguists and semioticians. A wide range of semiotic resources has been used to construct meaning. Multimodality describes communication practices in terms of the textual, oral, linguistic, spatial, and visual resources - or modes - used to compose messages. In this paper, the ads “BODREX EXTRA” in electronic media was analyzed by five semiotic systems of multimodal (sign, symbol and or code). Abstract

This study investigates the occurrences of maxims in the conversation between lecturers in “ WhatsApp”. This study applied qualitative research by collecting the data from WhatsApp and the other source which supports to research. Based on the data, it can be found that the lecturers use six maxim proposed by Leech. They use tact, generosity, approbation, modesty, agreement and sympathy maxim. From the six maxims, the lecturers tend to use agreement maxim in conversation. They use Whatsapp as the media for communication in sharing information, discussing or solving the problem related to increasing of university. Finally, the writer concluded that the conversation between lecturers in WhatsApp group can be said “polite”.

Abstract

Learning Motivation is one of the factors that influence the learning achievement. Encourage student learning motivation for learning activities, determine the direction of action and selecting actions that are beneficial in achieving academic achievement in maximum. A student with a high degree of intelligence may fail to achieve maximum performance if there is lack of motivation to learn. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is influence learning motivation on learning achievement.This study research is using Ex post facto design, by simple random sampling technique. The study population of 150 students of 5th semester chinese literary STBA-PIA academic year 2013/2014 with a sample of 30 students. Methods of data collection is using questionnaires of learning motivation and Score of the course “Zonghe” F2. Data Analysis is using T-test.Data analysis showed that test T is t count equal to 8.89 and t table (dk=28) of 1.70. t count > t table (8.89 > 1.70), which means it shows the significant influence between learning motivation on learning achievement of semester 5 sutdent in STBA-PIA. Abstract

The aim of this study is to know the significant correlation between mastering simple present tense and the students’ ability to build up advertisement text. This study was conducted on the first year students of MAS Nurul Hakim Tembung (2016). The population of this study was 46 students. In collecting data, I used test. The data was analyzed by product moment correlation. After analyzing the data, the writer finds that there is a significant correlation between mastering simple present tense and the students’ ability to build up advertisement text. It is known ∑ x = (3477), ∑ y= (2930), ∑ x = (280497), ∑ y = (202000), ∑ xy = (226460), the coefficient correlation is (0,3026). While rt (0,294) at ∝ =0,05. It means ro > rt (0,3026> 0,294). So, the hypothesis is accepted.Key Words: Mastering Simple Present Tense, to Build Up Advertisement Text.

Abstract

Teaching speaking to EFL learners is tremendouslychallenging. Having learned English for years at school andacquired sufficient vocabulary and grammatical features,students remain struggling to speak English effortlessly. Forthat matter, employing digital tools in teaching speaking canbe regarded as a prospective solution since some of which areparticularly designed for English language learning. Thesetools equip teachers with unlimited and up-to-date resourcesas well as facilitate students to be a lot more involved in thelearning activities and are expected to better perform theirspeaking ability. Accordingly, researcher utilized some digitaltools to teach students speaking skill to figure out the impacton their learning growth. This research employed quantitativeapproach to portray in detail the statistic descriptive ofstudents’ scores which reflects students’ speaking proficiencyprogress and their perspective and attitude regarding theelectronic devices use. From this data, further, it could beconsidered the benefits, disadvantages and follow up steps toescalate the potential application of such tools in teachingspeaking.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the use of expansion and projection in background study of research paper written by students. This paper adopts Systemic Functional Grammar to pinpoint and analyze the occurrences of Logical Function. Based on the analysis data, it can be found that the student uses expansion in elaboration, extension and enhancement. Then they also use the projection locution. In this case, the projection of idea doesn’t seem in the research paper. The total number also shows that expansion enhancement is the dominant type which occurs in the background study of research paper. From the finding, it can be understood that the student tries to elaborate the idea,  information in detail about what they are intended and reasoning for choosing the study by using relation of elaboration, extension and enhancement to avoid misinterpretation. It also display that the student is very seldom in using of projection locution such reporting idea or quoting. In fact, they are almost did not use this type. However, it has been known that the use of projection is very important for student to see what an expert or research subject say about the importance of their research. Therefore, this study can be used to describe a better understanding for the English learners of logico-semantic, so that the students can be able to write good research paper. Some implications can be implicated in writing and reading academic as well as translators, students and instructors involved in writing and reading pedagogy.

Abstract

The Picture word inductive is an inquiry-oriented language arts strategy that uses pictures containing familiar objects and actions to elicit words from children's listening and speaking vocabularies. This strategy leads the students to identify each object in a picture that they will describe. The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of Picture Word Inductive Model in improvement vocabulary skills‟ for Indonesian students at SD Swasta Pelangi Medan. The population of this research is the Second year students at SD Swasta Pelangi. The number of sample is 28 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Based on the result of this research, the writer suggest that Picture Word Inductive Model may be used as alternative media in teaching vocabulary, in order that the students can more understand and interested in learning activity especially in learning of English.
