Abstract

This study aims to understand English for Specific Purposes (ESP): a very significant branch of ELT that includes various linguistic efforts to define it, trace its historical growth, discuss its characteristics, and try to find out its scope and purpose. Although many conflicting views have been reported in defining ESP but there seems to be an eventual agreement that it is limited to teaching English to students who have specific goals and objectives: these goals may be professional, academic or scientific. Thus it is not a special discipline that is major in ESP but the specific goals of certain students. The same thing has been reinforced by discussions related to the absolute characteristics and variables. The historical growth of ESP has also been traced and it has been reported that although considered a modern approach, ESP textbooks exist even in the sixteenth century. It was found that the purpose of the ESP course was to enable students to function adequately in the target situation. Thus the ESP program must be directed towards the goal, directed by students and directed by the situation

Abstract

This study investigated teachers’ expectation for students that lead to the choice of assessment types and the considered factors in grading decision making. Two teachers from different public senior high school were selected. The phenomenon where the positive teaching expectations deliberately lead to high student achievement (Pygmalion effect) is found in this study. The results show that positive teachers’ expectation for students will be reflected through their positive body language and give learning instruction more challenging for those who can fulfill their expectation i.e high achievement students. The expectations are dealing with students’ active participation the class and manner or attitude. Henceforth, teachers give more concern in applying informal assessment in grading students’ achievement in which process is more concerned instead of result. In addition, their expectations for students are used in considered factor in grading students’ achievement that is reflected in the report cards. Low achievement students could receive disadvantageous learning condition because of teachers’ expectation influencing their performance in a negative way, as grant their grade in report cards does not measure their real achievement.

Abstract

A gender role is a set of societal norms dictating the types of behaviors which are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for people based on their actual or perceived sex or sexuality. Gender roles are usually centered on conceptions of femininity and masculinity, although there are exceptions and variations. The specifics regarding these gendered expectations may vary substantially among cultures, while other characteristics may be common throughout a range of cultures. There is ongoing debate as to what extent gender roles and their variations are biologically determined, and to what extent they are socially constructed.Islam looks at the woman as an equal, mature and capable partner of a man, without whom a family cannot exist and teaches that men and women are all the creation of Allah, existing on a level of equal worth and value. In some societies women are treated according to ancestral customs and tribal tradition, but in Islam they are treated with full respect and honor. Islam preserves women's honor and dignity, and requires that she must be treated with respect and honor. Her femininity should not be exploited in any way, rather she is to be regarded and treated as human individual whose sexuality does not enter into her relationship with any person other than her husband. In Islam marriage cannot take place unless the female freely agrees to it and a dowry is given to her. Islam puts priorities for the husbands and wives. The responsibility for providing for the family is on the husband, while the responsibility to care for the house and raising the children is on the wife. These are the main priorities, but cooperation between the husband and the wife is required and highly recommended. For both males and females, Islam requires that they wear proper, decent, modest, and clean clothes. Muslim women also are instructed by Allah in the Quran to wear as a minimum Hijab (head covering). At home, with her immediate family like her husband children, brothers, uncles, grandfathers and other males (family members who are forbidden to them to marry her), and with other women, a Muslim woman may take her outer garments off, and be free to beautify herself as she wants.

Abstract

The study is focused on investigating the English Department Students of Semarang State University perform the speech act of promise, the most dominant strategies used, the factors influence the students in performing promise, and to analyze the pragmatic transfer occurred in their English conversations. The respondents of this study were 25 students of the sixth semester English Department, Undergraduate Program, Semarang State University. The data were collected by Discourse Completion Task (DCT). The responses were classified into 13 promise strategies as proposed by Gibbs & Delaney (1987). Furthermore, their responses which contained the pragmatic transfer were also identified and interpreted into two types of pragmatic transfer based on Kasper (1992): pragma-linguistic transfer and socio-pragmatic transfer. Using the DCT, 245 responses in English and 168 responses in Bahasa Indonesia were collected. The result showed that the respondents dominantly used “explicit promise” strategy (26.53 %) in English illustration, and “future act” strategy (23.31 %) in Bahasa Indonesia illustration. Moreover, the most dominant factor that influenced promise performance was the social power level, followed by social distance, formality, and last rank of imposition. Last, there were pragmatic transfers occurred in performing the promise. The students still transferred their L1 cultural norms into English interactions specifically in making promise, both in pragma-linguistic transfer and socio-pragmatic transfer.
