Abstract

Cell Division topic in Biology is often challenging for students due to poor understanding. The study investigated how concept mapping impacts the retention of senior secondary school biology students in Kwara State, Nigeria. Using a quasi-experimental design with 77 students from two public junior high schools. The design is suitable due to its limitations, such as the inability to assign participants and the use of pre-existing groups randomly. Data was collected using Biology Concept Map Instructional Strategy for Teaching Cell Division and Biology Performing Test. The instruments were validated by experts and tested on 40 students. The results showed a significant difference in retention levels between male and female students when teaching Cell Division using this strategy (p0.05). It is recommended that Biology teachers prioritize the use of Computer-Machine Interfaces when teaching Cell Division, particularly for students with low retention and female students. The concept mapping instructional strategy significantly improves students' retention levels in Cell Division Biology, particularly among female students. It also indicates that gender is greatly influenced by this strategy, with females showing higher retention rates. Therefore, it suggests that using this approach in senior secondary school biology education can significantly enhance retention rates.

Abstract

The use of a jigsaw type cooperative learning model based on socioscientific issues in nervous system material can be used as a way to provide students with argumentation skills. This research aims to obtain information regarding the application of jigsaw type cooperative learning based on socioscientific issues in improving students' argumentation skills regarding the nervous system. This research uses classroom action research methods. The sample in this study was class XI students consisting of 36 people. The results of this research show that there is a significant difference in the average between before and after action research in argumentation skills. In cycle 1, the pretest score achieved argumentation level 1 (score 64.36), while in the posttest score achieved argumentation level 2 (score 72.75). After treatment in cycle 2, namely the application of jigsaw type cooperative learning based on socioscientific issues, it was able to improve students' argumentation skills. The posttest score achieved argumentation level of 3 (score 76.17) becomes a score of 80.39 with an argumentation level of 4. So, based on this classroom action research, the application of jigsaw type cooperative learning based on socioscientific issues and improves students' argumentation skills in nervous system material.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the cognitive load of high school students on biology learning. The method was used in this research is the survey method. The subjects of the study consisted of 179 students in grade X students consisting of 56 male students and 123 female students, 130 students in grade XI consisting of 37 male students and 93 female students, and 90 students in grade XII students consisting of 30 male students and 60 female students. The instrument in this study used a questionnaire cognitive load theory proposed by Meissner and Bogner about good learning design with a Likert scale. The results of research on high school students' cognitive load in biology revealed a medium average of 2.93, with GCL (3.29) ranking highest, followed by ICL (2.85) and ECL (2.66). The data processing results with the Kruskal Wallis test was showed that each factor has differences between ICL, ECL, and GCL. Thus, high school students still have a cognitive load when studying in class. The data processing results with the Mann U Whitney test to analyze the difference in cognitive load between male and female students was showed no significant difference between male and female students in cognitive load on biology learning.

Abstract

Planning is needed in practicum to connect students' conceptual and procedural knowledge through well-structured of student worksheets (SW). This can be achieved by using the Vee diagram. Vee diagram is a model that describes the relationship between conceptual and procedural understanding in building scientific knowledge. Through Vee diagrams, students can learn that knowledge comes from events/problem objects. This study aims to analyze and reconstruction student worksheets on Biotechnology concepts focused on making yogurt in several High School Biology textbooks. Method of this study is a descriptive-qualitative method through the stages of ANCOR (Analysis, Trial and Reconstruction). Samples were taken using a purposive method. Research shows that based on results of analysis of 6 student worksheets from various publishers referring to aspects of relevance to the curriculum, structural, practical, and knowledge construction aspects of Vee diagrams, respectively, 71%, 68%, 79% (good category) and 50% (fairly good category). Thus, it can be concluded that in general, the student worksheets are not sufficiently capable of meeting the demands of the curriculum and assisting students in constructing knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct and develop student worksheets that have been analyzed and tested to produce better student worksheet that fulfill every aspect specified above.

Abstract

Photosynthesis is a vital process in the biological world which is the basis for the survival of plants. It is important to ensure that the learning methods used are able to provide students with a deep understanding and encourage the development of critical and creative thinking skills in accordance with the demands of the independent curriculum. Several methods offer learning approaches that focus on applying theoretical concepts in practical contexts, such as PJBL, PBL, STEM and Conventional methods. It is hoped that this research can contribute to improving the quality of high school biology learning by providing insight into the effectiveness of different learning methods. The research method used is a Quasi Experimental method with a Posttest Only Design type. The research sample was four high school XII science (IPA) classes using purposive sampling. The results of the hypothesis test show that the Sig. less than 0.05, so it rejects Ho and accepts H1, that there are differences in learning outcomes using PJBL, PBL, STEM and conventional methods. Based on the mean rank, it was found that the STEM method was better than the PJBL, PBL and conventional methods.

Abstract

Environmental literacy is a key concept in promoting individual attitudes towards conscious lifestyle changes towards environmental challenges in a sustainable manner. This research is a systematic literature review by analyzing articles from 2018-April 2023 with environmental literacy in education as the main focus. This study aims to collect information related to various studies on environmental literacy in education in Indonesia. The results showed an increase in publication trends, the dominant research was quantitative research, besides that grade 7 and 10 students became the most subjects. Tests and percentage analysis are instruments and methods of data analysis used successively, and the most treatment is in the form of environmental literacy tests. The recommendations proposed for the next research are increasing the diversity of research types, research subjects, as well as the selection of appropriate instruments and data analysis.

Abstract

This study examined the influence of social media applications on pre-service Biology teachers’ learning outcomes in Kwara State College of Education, Oro, Nigeria. The sample comprised sixty pre-service teachers who were drawn using purposive sampling technique from NCE 3 of the 2021/2022 set. Questionnaire was used for data collection while the data gathered were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistical tool at a mean benchmark of 2.50. Findings from the study revealed that WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are the commonly used social media applications by pre-service Biology teachers which are usually accessed through mobile phones and tablets. Further finding indicates that pre-service Biology teachers use social media applications daily but more during the night hours. There was also a significant difference between social media application usage and pre-service Biology teachers study habits in Kwara State College of Education, Oro, Nigeria t(118) = 2.39, p = .02. The study concluded that pre-service Biology teachers use social media and it is affecting their study habits, and in turn their learning outcomes. It is therefore, recommended that the college should provide adequate training to equip pre-service teachers with necessary skills to maximize the utilization of social media applications to boost their learning outcomes.
