Abstract

The understanding reading text is essential for every student. Without knowing the reading content, students will not get information or lessons from the text they read, so it is necessary to assess their reading ability TBLT in the reading learning process. For this reason, researchers conducted research using a qualitative approach by applying the self-study method on narrative inquiry. For this reason, researchers exported their experiences when implementing TBLT to assess an autistic student named Dimas. The learning implementation is divided into three stages. It is reading tasks, drawing tasks, and retelling tasks. All of the tasks are interrelated. The researchers hoped that this research could become a reference for teachers to apply assessment with TBLT and contribute to the development of education globally and comprehensively, especially in Indonesia. The data used in this study are documentation, journal diary, field notes. The validity is done by linking the data from the documentation, journal diary, field notes, and for data analysis, the researcher connects the data with previous theories.

Abstract

TOEFL was seen as a prerequisite for non-native English students to study abroad, to get a suitable employment, and to get a university diploma. Students also found it challenging to complete the TOEFL reading exam. This was an experimental research based on applying a non-sequential strategy. This study aimed at investigating whether the use of non-sequential strategy was effective to complete the reading comprehension session in TOEFL ITP or not. 100 English university students engaged entirely in the study as participants. They were studying at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Sunan Giri (UNUGIRI) located in Bojonegoro, Eastern Java, Indonesia. The researcherss provided the students a pre-test and post-test in order to collect the data. The students were permitted to perform the exam on their own during the pre-test. In this pre-test the researcherss provided no special instructions. In the post-test, the participants got a preferential treatment. The students were advised to follow a non-sequential strategy for the exam. The data were produced through the students’ compilation of TOEFL scores. The data were anlyzed by comparing the students’ scores in pre-test and post-test. The results showed that a non-sequential strategy to complete the reading comprehension session of the TOEFL test is very effective to be implemented. This result is addressed further in this article.

Abstract

Abstract. Instructional design models have been shifted throughout the years by different scholars because they need to be developed or modified to gain the effectiveness of instructional process. Concerning with the shifts of the related theories, the scholars fomulated a number of patterns in creating the theories in which the aim of this theoretical study is to provide an appropriate understanding in relation to  how to utilize instructional design models. Instruction is regarded as both teaching and learning which have connection with the building of knowledge and skills. Even though there are a lot of instructional design models, a few major distinctions are found in some conditions, e.g. instructional design models present conceptual paradigms in terms of visualizing, performing, and controlling processes for embodying high-standardized teaching and learning artifacts. The exact choice of instructional design models helps us to match the right process with the existing situation. Therefore, instructional design models require a valuable source to match the proper creative process to the proper design situation and also an effective rationale for conducting instructional design research. Keywords: Instrcutional design models, theoretical paradigms

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the preparation, administration, and scoring of the speaking tests. The study employed a case study design conducted in two higher education institutions in West Java. The data were gathered through document analysis of the syllabi to recheck the objective of the tests and the scoring rubrics, six classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with two lecturers, and open-ended questionnaires distributed to two lecturers. The findings indicated that the lecturers had been able to prepare the speaking tests based on the guidelines of the test preparation and the teaching objective in the institutions’ syllabus. But, the tests were in one-way communication, there were no interaction between the lecturers and the students.the lecturers also faced problems in the test administration: inadequate classroom facilities, limited time allocation, a relatively large number of students, the lecturers’ insufficient knowledge of the testing principles, and the vagueness of the scoring criteria. In addition, the lecturers had their own criteria in assessing the students’ performance: the first respondent focused on fluency, pronunciation and accuracy. The second one focused on fluency, pronunciation, grammar and content. Lastly, it was found that the lecturers gave one final score for each student because of the hassle they faced. The findings above suggest that the speaking lecturers need more ugrading in designing, administering and scoring the speaking tests in order to improve the administration of the tests. The speaking lecturers should be eager to widen their knowledge and develop the scoring criteria to give appropriate scores to the students. Key words: English speaking tests, test preparation, test administration, scoring.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that has spread throughout the world has caused schools, universities to temporarily close and requires them to carry out teaching and learning activities at home with online or e-learning. Through E-learning can carry out teaching and learning activities anywhere and anytime. Some students are familiar and some students also have problems with the implementation of E-learning. According to Supiani (2020), emotional experience and social experience are related things to someone's academic performance. In line with the problem of learning through e-learning, their emotional experience is one of the things that affect their academic performance. Cleveland-Innes and Campbell (2012) stated that there are two emotions related to online learning as positive and negative emotions. This study focuses on exploring what emotions that students felt when studying with E-learning. The research design that this study use is a qualitative method and narrative inquiry by collecting data through semi-structured interviews. The results of this research shown students felt both positive and negative emotions such as anxiety, fear, in line with problems in learning that affect their emotions during E-learning. Therefore, students also have strategies to resolve their problems with E-learning. Then, instead of e-learning the students still prefer face-to-face learning.
