Abstract

Collocation errors are often made by Indonesian EFL learners in essays. The error, which is part of learning process, stems from inter and intra language. The study aims to identify and quantify the collocation error in students’ composition. The data were 20 argumentative essays collected from students’ final paper work of universitas Bina Sarana Informatika majoring in English study. The study employs collocation identification procedure to identify grammatical and lexical collocation. The result was then compared with the standard collocation to produce standard and non-standard (error) collocations. The result shows that 25 % or 14 out of 55 grammatical collocation contain error while lexical collocations error is dominated by verb + noun lexical collocation which take  10 % of total amount of lexical collocations in use and in total there are 23 errors of 147 collocation in use or 15 % lexical collocation error. From the result, it can be inferred that lexical collocation error appear more frequently than grammatical collocation error.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to describe how to implement ORAI mobile application to teach speaking in EFL classes. As library research, the data were collected by analyzing articles, journals, and papers. This paper used descriptive qualitative method. The finding of this paper whowed that the use of ORAI mobile application  is effective for learning speaking skill. The students feel fun and confident in speaking after learning through ORAI. Although it is famous as an application to improve speaking skill but it eventually can be used for the other skills as well. The teacher wil be helped to maximize the students in practicing to speak in English. ORAI mobile application can be used to control the students’ progress in speaking especially in pronounciatation. This paper discusses the modified version of ORAI mobile application, and then argue the expected impacts of the implementation.

Abstract

The Learning Management System (LMS) self-efficacy determined that the learner established their capabilities and confidence through a positive mindset of virtual learning activities. The integration of experiences and abilities was developed to impact Moodle as an electronic facility efficiently. The purpose of the study was to aim the investigations and determination to the LMS Moodle Self-efficacy in language learning pedagogy. The study’s design was conducted mixed research method collaborated to the quantitative and qualitative approach, and sequential basic structuralized applied to the sequential phase (quantitative and qualitative). The objective of the study took on the 257 language learners in Higher Education. The application scale of LMS Moodle self-efficacy integrated into language learning in Higher. It involved the 22 questionnaires in selecting dichotomy to agree and disagree point of the Likert scale. The study’s result had exposed the three-scales enhance to the platform of Moodle self-efficacy of accessing, Moodle self-efficacy of communication, and Moodle self-efficacy of electronic testing and feedback. The exploratory LMS Moodle self-efficacy had a maximum point range of around 0.73 and 0.92, and the condition had established to the participants’ respondents and variation in each statement. Consequently, these three scales demonstrated unbiased responses toward the questionnaire items. The online language learners conduced to comprehend Moodle become the adaptive LMS to implement the English language learning strategy completely. Nevertheless, the communication and versatility access needed to develop well in conducting language learning content so learners would feel encouraged and motivated following virtual language learning.

Abstract

Code-switching and code-mixing are the linguistic phenomena that commonly occur in bilingualism society. Code-switching happens when the speakers mix words or phrases from the two languages during the course of speech or conversation. Meanwhile, code-mixing is the change of one language to another within the same utterance or in the same oral or written text. This research aimed to find out the types of code-switching, code-mixing and the reason as well used by Cinta Laura Kiehl as the guest star in Hotman Paris Show television program on January 2nd 2020. This research also aimed to find out the reason of Cinta Laura Kiehl of doing code-switching and code-mixing. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method as the research design. Content analysis and documentation was used as the technique to collect the data. The instruments used were human instrument and documentation sheet. To analyze the data, the researcher used Miles and Huberman (1994) interactive model. The result of the research showed that all the types of code-switching and code-mixing was used by Cinta Laura Kiehl. The most dominant type of code-switching used was intra-sentential code-switching and the most dominant type of code-mixing used was insertion. The most dominant reason of doing code-switching and code-mixing used was to maintain talking about a particular topic.

Abstract

Learning process needs to be well-planned by the teachers in 21st century. It aims to build the students’ character to be more professional facing social-life problem. To evaluate, Performance-Based Assessment (PBA) has been implemented by many states which emphasizes the performance-skills of demonstrating ideas such as presentations, debate, making papers, shows etc. Its function of engaging students’ interest in subject and as teachers’ way of assessing students’ capability. For college students, doing group presentation has been done in many times and mostly implemented as assignments. However, students’ opinions toward this assessment must be important case for teachers’ evaluation. This paper is made to find out and analyze students’ perception on PBA in university level.

Abstract

Google Classroom is one of features from Google that mostly used by the educators recently. It helps them to submit and organize the students’ assignments. The main purpose of this study is to investigate students’ perception towards the use of Google Classroom in writing subject. The study is carried out through a qualitative research design. The study involved the students of higher education who have used Google Classroom in writing subject for at least one semester. The data obtained through questionnaire and interview. The data obtained were analyzed by using thematic analysis. Finding revealed that students perceive it as a tool that helps them to submit the assignment easily. They assumed that it assist them in managing the assignment better. Thus, it can be concluded that Google Classroom is useful for both lecturer and student in writing subject. Keywords: Google Classroom, writing, technology integration, technology in ELT

Abstract

The use of media in teaching and learning is needed. It gives an effect toward the learning outcome. Inappropriate teaching media made a new problem; the teaching and learning was not effective, wasting time and cost. Therefore, the lecturer must catch a special media to overcome the students’ problem regarding learning vocabulary. In this research, the teacher did a classroom action research by using two cycles; Planning, Implementing, Observing and reflecting with three meetings in every single cycle. The research was conducted with the purposes: 1) to explore the vocabulary mastery catch by students of civil engineering by using photograph ,2) to find out the students responses toward using photograph in learning vocabulary. The subject of the research was the students of civil engineering. In obtaining an actual data the researcher used descriptive analysis toward documentation, score list and observation checklist. After data have been analyzed, the result showed that using photograph as teaching media was effective. They got 79.00 % in the first cycle and got better score in the next cycle with average 87.00 %. Finally, the hypothesis proposed in this research was accepted. In conclusion, Photograph is the appropriate media in exploring students' vocabulary mastery through students of civil engineering

Abstract

This study intends to investigate lecturers' practices for teaching speaking in online learning during pandemic COVID-19. For Lecturer, online learning has posed a new challenge, particularly in the area of teaching speaking. To make the lesson more exciting, the lecturer requires a strategy and should be able to mix it with online learning media. The research was descriptive qualitative study. The study focused on two UNSIKA-speaking lecturers. For the study, the researcher employed observation and interviews as instruments. According to the findings of the study, lecturers employ a variety of strategies to teach speaking, including podcasts, debates, and story-telling, retelling, dialogue, and drama. The lecturer combined some media in learning: whatsapp, zoom, microsof team, google meet, google classroom, youtube and edmodo.

Abstract

It focusses on improving student’s English achievement assisted by media namely millennial multiliteracy genre handbook model. It plays research and development model consisting of 6 stages, as follows (1) preliminary study; (2) research planning; (3) product design; (4) product validation; (5) product trials carried out at three stages of the individual, small, and limited scaled and; (6) the final product. Three different colleges (STAI Tasikmalaya, LP3I Tasikmalaya and Politeknik Triguna Tasikmalaya) becomes the places obtaining the data. The media validation result by the book expert obtained 84.6% and by the material expert resulted 85.3%. The developed media was valid and did not need any revision. The research finds that the total students’ respond on individual scale is 81 %, the total students’ respond on small scale is 79 %, and the total students’ respond on limited scale is 82%. It indicates that millennial multiliteracy genre handbook model strongly valid and it can be used as media to teach English at colleges or universities level. Furthermore, millennial multiliteracy genre handbook model gives positive contribution on the students’ English learning achievement because the significant level is 0.000 less than 0.5.

Abstract

Writing is not just production of text. It is also process of learning and trying out the ideas to choose the proper words with correct grammatical rules. The objective of the research is to know the effects of vocabulary and grammar mastery on students’ writing skill. This research used survey method with total sample of the research is 40 students. The data were collected by giving three sets of objective test as the instruments to the 40 students. The data analysis technique of the research is multiple linear regression analysis. The research findings show: 1) There is a significant effect of vocabulary and grammar mastery simultaneously on students’ writing skill. 2) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ writing skill.. 3) There is a significant effect of grammar mastery on students’ writing skill.
