Abstract

The interest in and research on blended learning have increased and developed in the last two decades. This study addresses the topic of blended learning particularly exploring the different definitions of blended learning and the views of teachers on blended learning courses. By locating papers on blended learning using specific databases, this systematic study appraises peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2019. After examining the full papers, 32 studies are then selected as they meet all inclusion criteria and answer the research questions. The findings of this study indicate that blended learning is not a homogenous concept since it means different thing to different people. Besides, teachers in the blended courses experience several challenges, hence constant supports and persistent effort from all the components including the related institution should be given to achieve the potential benefits of this learning mode. Keywords:Blended learning, higher education, teacher perception

Abstract

Research on foreign language writing has shown that most EFL students faced some difficulties to produce a good composition in English. However, attention has mainly been directed to explore errors found on students’ written work. Little is known about what difficulties students have in the writing process. The present study investigates difficulties students faced in the six steps of writing process, namely choosing a topic, gathering ideas, outlining or organizing ideas, writing the first draft, reviewing the content and structure, as well as revising and making final correction. This study applied a qualitative method by using questionnaire and interview to collect the data. The subjects were English Language Education students who were taking an Essay Writing course in the third semester. The findings indicate that students face difficulties in all steps of essay writing process. Among those six steps, outlining and gathering ideas are claimed as the most effortful steps students have to pass. Writing the first draft and revising are the next two steps considered as challenging. Lastly, choosing a topic and reviewing content and structure are also demanding for small part of students. The difficulties students have and suggestions they propose are presented in this study. Those could be a basis for doing some improvements at institutional as well as individual level.

Abstract

Grammarly is one of the famous Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) tools used by EFL students. However, studies evaluating Grammarly’s feedback accuracy, especially the premium version, are still limited. This study aims to: (1) explore EFL students' perceptions of Grammarly premium feedback, (2) provide a detailed analysis of types of inaccurate feedback provided by Grammarly premium, and (3) investigate how students handle inaccurate feedback. This mix method study used a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to collect the data. The participants were undergraduate EFL students who were writing or had completed their thesis. The results indicate that: (1) students have positive and negative perceptions on the use of Grammarly Premium. The ‘correctness’ feature improved spelling, grammar, punctuation, convention, article, and consistency. The ‘clarity’ feature improves readability. The ‘engagement’ feature made writing varied and the ‘delivery’ feature to get the right tone. On the other hand, students complained about the need of a stable internet connection to work properly and require additional proofreading. (2) Inaccurate feedback generally occurred in the features of correctness (convention, spelling, punctuation, article, and consistency), clarity (passive voice and conciseness), and engagement (variety). (3) Students continued to use Grammarly Premium because it helped them self-proofreading. In short, students still preferred to use Grammarly Premium with some concern in accepting the provided feedback. HIGHLIGHTS: Undergraduates students mostly have positive perception toward Grammarly Premiumwhile using it during thesis writing. Grammarly Premium provided many useful features like correctness, clarity, convention, and delivery to help undergraduate students in thesis writing. Despite its misleading feedback, students still used Grammarly Premium to help enhance their writing and self-proofreading.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore the practice of an English placement test at one of the English education programs during three different testing periods (before the COVID-19 pandemic, during the pandemic, and after the pandemic). Further, the study sought to investigate the views of the test administrators, mainly focusing on the challenges they faced administering the test during the period mentioned. Using a qualitative case study approach, the researchers gathered the data from the results of observations and final reflections of the test administrators. The findings revealed that the placement test in three different periods applied similar three consecutive stages: the pre-testing stage, the testing day, and the post-testing stage. The goal of the test is also similar to that it is used to gauge the newly intake students entering TBIP. Rather than grouping students for specific classes, the placement test was conducted as a part of need analysis strategies to understand students’ English proficiency levels. While the placement tests before and after the pandemic have similarities, especially in preparation activities, the test format, and the test delivery, the placement test during COVID-19 differs. Despite those issues, the placement test administrators believed the test brought additional benefits. In addition to gauging the newly intake students’ English proficiency, the placement test was a way to start building positive relationships with students before meeting in an actual class. Hence, the test administrators have mixed feelings upon administering the placement test. Some final thoughts conclude the papers.

Abstract

Approaches, strategies, and methods are significant elements that highly divine the successful teaching and learning process. Having been concerned with two different teaching approaches, this research study aimed to explore the comparison between the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) implementation in English subjects for junior high school students. This research used a comparative descriptive study located at MTs Negeri 1 Malang and MTs Negeri 2 Malang. In-depth interviews and direct observations were two primary data collection techniques in this research. The data analysis was conducted using data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The findings revealed key distinctions in implementation: GBA at MTsN 1 Malang followed four stages (BKoF, MoT, JCoT, and ICoT) with modifications like peer-review activities and interactive modeling, which enhanced students’ listening, writing, speaking, and collaboration skills. In contrast, PBL at MTsN 2 Malang emphasized critical thinking through authentic problem-solving tasks in five stages, including guided investigations, group presentations, and reflections, which fostered critical thinking, communication, and cooperation. Both methods were effective in improving English skills and fostering collaboration, though GBA focused more on building individual understanding, while PBL prioritized problem-solving and group interaction.

Abstract

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education by offering personalized learning tools, yet its role in fostering self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students remains underexplored. This study investigates EFL students' perceptions of AI applications in supporting their self-regulated writing strategies, particularly in planning, monitoring, and evaluation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from 40 EFL students at an Islamic-based university in East Java, Indonesia, through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that most students perceive AI tools as beneficial, particularly for grammar checking, spelling correction, and word choice improvement, though their reliance on AI for idea generation, topic selection, and writing progress monitoring varies. While AI is valued for feedback, paraphrasing, and translation, students still prefer human guidance for in-depth explanations, with some expressing concerns that excessive dependence on AI may hinder their comprehension and writing confidence. These findings highlight the need for a balanced integration of AI tools into writing instruction, emphasizing the importance of human feedback and personalized learning approaches.

Abstract

The implementation of the National Assessment which includes the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM), Character Survey, and Learning Environment Survey is considered a challenge for both teachers and schools/madrasahs. Therefore, it is necessary to train teachers to prepare themselves for the implementation of this new assessment system. This community service aims to provide training for madrasah teachers regarding creating the questions. The 50 participants of the activity were teachers from Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) who were members of the Group of Teachers of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (KKG MI) Kepanjen District. This program carried out face-to-face while still applying health protocols. The results of this program show that understanding the AKMI concept and preparing questions requires intensive assistance and a long period of time. Because it is improving teachers’ skills, each participant can do individual coaching with the presenter
