Abstract

Practicum is a learning method that involves students in experiments to understand concepts in depth. One concept that is often considered abstract is chlorophyll, which formation is influenced by environmental factors such as water availability. To clarify this concept, a practicum on chlorophyll extraction from peranggi chili (Capsicum annum L. Var Chinensis) under drought stress was conducted, while introducing local plants to students. The innovation in this practicum lies in the use of color reference sheets as visual indicators. This study aimed to measure learning outcomes and students' responses to the practicum. This study usesed a quantitative descriptive method with instruments in the form of teaching modules, LKPD, psychomotor and affective observation sheets, and response questionnaires. This research consisted of three stages. The first stage of preparation included making and validating instruments. The implementation stage included chlorophyll extraction activities, observations with color reference, psychomotor and affective assessments, and questionnaire filling. Data analysis was carried out by calculating and categorizing data based on Riduwan's categories. The results showed the acquisition of cognitive (85.85), psychomotor (95%), and affective (93%) scores with a very high category, as well as a student response of 81%. This practicum is a new innovation in chlorophyll observation with a simple method and low cost, so it can be applied in schools.

Abstract

The Bogor Botanical Gardens possess considerable potential as a learning resource; however, only a limited number of schools utilise this opportunity. This study aims to examine the impact of the field trip method at the Bogor Botanical Gardens on students’ motivation and learning outcomes in the topic Ecosystem Components and Their Interactions. A quasi-experimental design was employed. The participants comprised 22 male and 35 female students, divided into two groups: the control and the experimental groups. The experimental group participated in a field trip, while the control group followed the conventional method typically used by teachers, namely group discussions. During the third session, both groups engaged in discussions based on socioscientific issues. The results indicated no significant difference in overall learning outcomes between the two groups. However, an analysis using Bloom’s taxonomy showed that the experimental group performed better in the domains of understanding (C2) and application (C3). In contrast, the control group excelled in the analysis domain (C4). Similarly, there was no significant difference in learning motivation between the two groups. Nonetheless, students in the experimental group displayed enthusiasm, expressed enjoyment, and found the materials easier to comprehend during field-based learning activities. Based on these findings, field trips to the Bogor Botanical Gardens may enhance the affective domain and foster more conscious, meaningful, and enjoyable learning experiences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of applying the Discussion-Comparison with Critical Analysis and Learning Community Extended methods on student motivation and cognitive learning outcomes in Biology at SMA Negeri 7 Bengkulu. This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a Nonrandomized Control-Group Pretest-Posttest design. The research sample consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class taught using innovative methods and the control class taught using conventional methods. The research instruments were a validated motivation questionnaire and a multiple-choice cognitive learning outcome test. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test and N-Gain calculations. The results showed that students in the experimental class had higher learning motivation than those in the control class. In addition, the increase in cognitive learning outcomes in the experimental class was also more significant, with an average N-Gain of 0.7225 (high category), while the control class only reached 0.1020 (low category). These findings prove that integrating critical discussion with practitioner involvement can increase students' motivation, conceptual understanding, and analytical skills. Thus, the use of this method is more effective than conventional learning in improving students' cognitive learning outcomes.
