Abstract

During the process of learning to speak, students often encounter various challenges. Many students exhibit passivity in speaking lessons and lack confidence when speaking in front of the class due to limited vocabulary and a lack of conceptual understanding. The researcher aimed to determine whether the use of "Acting Play Scripts" (APS) in teaching speaking could improve students' speaking skills. The research problem focused on the effectiveness of teaching speaking through the APS technique for students in the English Department of PGRI University Palembang. The objective was to assess the effectiveness of the APS technique in enhancing students' speaking abilities. The study specifically concentrated on students' speaking proficiency in English and utilized a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The researcher selected a single class, namely the 5A class of fifth-semester students from the English Department, comprising 33 students. The findings revealed that the average score in the pre-test was 63.80, while the average score in the post-test was 71.51. The significance level was set at 5%, with a degree of freedom (df) of 32. The critical value of the t-table was 1.6938, and the t-obtained was 55.07. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating that teaching speaking through the APS technique was effective for students in the English Department of PGRI University Palembang. The APS technique resulted in improvements in students' speaking abilities, including their mean scores, their ability to express ideas using appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and their pronunciation development. The implementation of the APS technique in the speaking classroom exhibited strengths, such as increased student participation and enhanced speaking skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the dynamics of classroom interaction and examine the factors influencing it. The researcher utilized qualitative methods, including classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. The findings revealed that the teacher predominantly led and controlled the interaction. Good interaction only occurs at the beginning of the lesson, so for the most part, the teacher initiates and the students only responded to the teacher by giving answers in the form of phrases or words.  For interaction between students they are interacted with their friends most of the time. But, mostly, it was not related to the English topic discussed.  The researcher also found several factors affecting classroom interaction, such as students' lack of motivation, hesitancy to speak and engage in class discussions due to limited vocabulary, embarrassment, and fear of making mistakes.

Abstract

The impact of technology on contemporary living is substantial. Program changes are required in education to close the gap between present and future teaching and learning technology. During the learning process, using applications as instructional material is a workable strategy. Finding out how to use the Cake Application in English classes for students and examining the opportunities and difficulties encountered in doing so at Vocational High School 8, Palembang, are the goals of this research. Data were gathered by the researcher using observation, questionnaires, and documentation, all of which were qualitative methods. The outcome demonstrates that the Cake application is successfully used in the English language learning process and can boost students' motivation to learn the language. The Cake app is user-friendly, free of intrusive advertisements, packed with features, and offers a ton of videos arranged according to quiz level and category. Additionally, students can improve their grades and fix errors with the Cake program. One of the difficulties in utilizing this software for both students and teachers is that not every curricular item can be found in the Cake app, therefore educators have to make adjustments. The Internet connection, smartphone batteries, smartphone storage capacity, and the requirement for hearing aids for the listening phase were more issues.
