Abstract

Instagram is a social media platform commonly used to share messages in the form of text, images, audio, or video. The content shared varies depending on the purpose and intentions of the account owner. One such use is the expression of hate speech. This research focuses on hate speech found in the comments made by followers of the artist @lestykejora on a post featuring her newborn son. Many comments were made in text form that aimed to insult and defame the child, Leslar, particularly by mocking his appearance, which resembles his mother, Lesty Kejora. The aim of this study is to examine the forms of illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts, the presence of taboo expressions, and manifestations of hate speech used by the followers of the @lestykejora account. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, using data sourced directly from the Instagram account @lestykejora. The findings of the analysis reveal: (1) the dominant forms of hate speech found in the comments are insults and defamation; and (2) the utterances reflect a variety of contextual backgrounds, including physical, psychological, economic, and social aspects.

Abstract

This research explored the effectiveness of integrating podcasts into group discussions to enhance students’ ability to write discussion texts. Despite the recognized importance of writing for academic success, many students found it challenging to construct well-organized and coherent argumentative essays due to a lack of engagement and limited exposure to diverse perspectives. To overcome this issue, a six-week intervention was conducted involving thirty-three eleventh-grade students at SMA N 1 Cepiring, employing a one-group pre-test and post-test experimental design. The influence of the combined use of podcasts and group discussion was measured through paired-samples t-tests, comparing students’ writing performance before and after the intervention. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ skills in producing logically structured and cohesive discussion texts following the treatment.

Abstract

Literary works often serve as mirrors reflecting the socio-political dynamics within a society, making them fertile ground for analysis through the lens of the sociology of literature. Marxist theory, in particular, offers a critical framework for examining the social structures and power relations embedded in literary texts. One prominent example is Najib Kailani, whose writings especially the novel Hamamahus Salaam are deeply influenced by his socio-cultural background and educational exposure, manifesting in narratives of resistance and social critique. This study adopts a descriptive-analytic approach, gathering data in the form of linguistic expressions, including words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues, to interrogate the presence of class conflict and proletarian resistance within the novel. The analysis reveals key indicators of class struggle, primarily stemming from: (1) systemic exploitation and oppression, (2) the emergence of social consciousness among the marginalized, and (3) the complicity of ideological state apparatuses or superstructures. The manifestations of resistance identified in the text include: (1) the development of proletarian class awareness, (2) collective defiance against oppressive forces, (3) acts of repressive sabotage, (4) the strategic formation of resistance groups, and (5) direct confrontational actions, including threats of violence. Through these elements, the novel articulates a potent critique of class-based injustices and advocates for collective agency among the oppressed.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the reciprocal teaching method in enhancing students’ reading comprehension. Employing a quasi-experimental quantitative design, it utilized descriptive texts as instructional materials and analyzed data through pre- and post-tests using JASP software. Normality test results showed significance values of 0.083 (pre-test) and 0.735 (post-test), indicating normally distributed data. Homogeneity tests yielded significance values of 0.849 and 0.108, suggesting equal variances between groups. An independent samples t-test revealed no significant difference in pre-test scores (p = 0.383), but a significant improvement in post-test results (p < 0.001), highlighting the positive influence of reciprocal teaching on reading comprehension and metacognitive skills. Conducted at a junior high school in Banyuwangi, the study involved 30 students 16 in the experimental group and 14 in the control group. In addition to assessing instructional outcomes, the research also explored the broader educational benefits of the method.

Abstract

This study investigates how intrinsic and extrinsic motivation affect the reading performance of third-grade EFL students at Al Kautsar Putra Secondary School. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered from questionnaires, interviews, and academic records. The questionnaire, with "agree" or "disagree" options, assessed students’ motivation toward reading English texts. Ten randomly chosen students also participated in interviews. Findings showed that 70% were mainly influenced by extrinsic factors such as grades, rewards, and teacher expectations. However, some students demonstrated intrinsic motivation, enjoying the reading process and feeling satisfied when understanding texts independently. Interview data revealed a mix of motivations, with peer and teacher support playing key roles. Institutional support, such as structured activities and social reinforcement, was found to significantly boost motivation and reading growth. These supports also improved students’ confidence in speaking English. Consistent academic progress in reading scores from Grade 7 to Grade 9 further confirmed that motivation, supported by continuous instruction, positively impacts language learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study explores junior high school students’ perceptions and experiences regarding the use of digital storytelling in English reading instruction, specifically in the context of descriptive texts. The primary aim is to examine how digital storytelling affects students’ reading comprehension, motivation, and engagement. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were gathered through Likert-scale questionnaires and semi-structured interviews involving 15 eighth-grade students from SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Sempu. Thematic analysis supported by triangulation revealed that over 69.70% of respondents expressed positive or neutral views toward digital storytelling, based on responses to 16 questionnaire items. In addition, data from 10 interview questions indicated that multimedia elements like images and audio significantly improved students' understanding and memory retention, while also boosting their motivation and interest in reading. Although some students reported challenges with vocabulary and reading confidence, the majority expressed a preference for digital storytelling over conventional approaches. These findings suggest that digital storytelling holds strong potential as an effective and engaging instructional method for enhancing reading literacy in EFL settings.

Abstract

This research investigates the synergy between English language learning and civic education, emphasizing the cultivation of global citizenship through the Pancasila Student Profile within Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. In the era of accelerating globalization, mastery of English emerges as an essential competency, enabling students to participate meaningfully in international discourse while safeguarding their national identity. The study explores how English instruction can function as a conduit for embedding values of cultural pluralism, tolerance, and cross-border collaboration. Using a case study at Sekolah Karakter, it examines the feasibility and impact of integrating English language pedagogy with Citizenship Education (PPKn) to strengthen students’ comprehension of global citizenship while preserving indigenous wisdom. Findings reveal that the fusion of thematic and project-based learning in both English and PPKn settings deepens students’ engagement with global challenges, nurtures empathy, and fortifies their patriotic consciousness. The research concludes that a well-orchestrated integration of English and civic education holds significant potential in shaping learners who are both globally attuned and firmly anchored in their cultural heritage.
