Abstract

ABSTRAK Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah formal maupun non formal lebih banyak berkutat pada pembahasan struktur-struktur bahasa Inggris saja, sehingga mengurangi kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan bahasa yang dipelajari dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Oleh sebab itu, ditawarkan metode langsung dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris di lembaga kursus English Center. Hasil dari data kuantitaf menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode langsung dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa pada level pemula di lembaga kursus English Center. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil yang dicapai oleh siswa pada saat diberikan tes. Nilai rata-rata siswa pada tes awal adalah 30,6% yang dikategorikan masih sangat kurang. Setelah diberikan treatment pada Siklus I, nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat menjadi 47,7% dan masih berada pada kategori kurang. Namun, pada siklus II nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat menjadi 71,3% dan berada dalam kategori baik. Peningkatan ini juga didukung oleh data kualitatif. Siswa mampu berbicara dalam konteks percakapan sederhana. Mereka mampu menggunakan ungkapan-ungkapan dan kosakata tertentu secara komunikatif.   Kata kunci: keterampilan berbicara, peningkatan, kosakata, metode langsung.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the ability of the students in writing a narrative essay and to find out their difficulties in writing it. The students under concern were the second-semester students of academic year 2016 taking the English 2 subject at STIKOM Bali Dual-Degree Program. This study used the theory of Writing particularly Narrative Writing, and theory of English Grammar. The theory of Writing was used to measure the students’ ability in making a narrative writing. The theory of English Grammar was used to measure their ability in using the grammar. The result of this study showed that the highest score and also the lowest score of the students’ narrative writing were in the part of idea of the content. The proficient category was in the part of vocabulary and mechanic, but some of them also need to improve their vocabulary or the varied wording. There were some difficulties faced by the students in writing narrative essay. The first one was in focusing to the idea of the writing, the use of the varied words, and the use of the correct grammar. Then it can be concluded that they need to improve their focus on the idea and in terms of the details, words, and the most important one is in using the correct grammar.    Keywords: narrative writing, ability, difficulty

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a classroom action research which aimed at 1) investigating the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after being treated by Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials and 2) investigating the students’ response about the implementation of Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials towards reading comprehension. For the accomplishment of the research, 41 X IS 2 freshmen of SMA N 7 Denpasar were involved within this research. In garnering the data, reading comprehension test, observation sheet, interview guide, and questionnaire were used as the research instruments. Afterwards, the gained data was analyzed by means of qualitatively and quantitatively descriptive analysis. The first finding of the research is Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials were able to enhance the students’ reading comprehension. It was proven by the mean score gained at the cycle I was 69.65 which was lower than the mean score in cycle II that was 78.75. Both of the mean scores were higher than the mean score of the pre-test which was 63.17. The second finding of the research is that there was a positive response from the students towards the implementation of Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials. This finding was supported by the result of the interview and the questionnaire. The students felt at ease to undergo learning and teaching process within the implementation of Affinity strategy. Affinity strategy assisted the students to construct their knowledge about the passages through connecting their prior knowledge and peers. Moreover, the authentic reading materials provided the students with a real language classroom.   Key Words: Authentic reading materials, Affinity strategy, reading                  comprehension

CODE SWITCHING AND CODE MIXING TOWARDS INDONESIAN SUBJECT AS IMPLEMENTATION OF REGULATION NO. 24 YEAR OF 2009 IN SMP GANESHA DENPASAR ABSTRACT This research is aimed at analyzing the code switching and code mixing of the teacher and the students in the process of learning Indonesian in SMP Ganesha Denpasar. This research also describes the factors of code switching and code mixing of the teacher-students communication in the process of learning Indonesian in the class room. This research is a library research. The theoretical and referential material that is related to the research social situation is collected. The observation method is also done in order to analyze the response of the respondents. This method is done through the process of recording the phenomenon. Related to the research problem, the aims of this study is to analyze the types, the factors, and the influence of code switching and code mixing occurred in the process of learning Indonesian in SMP Ganesha Denpasar. Abstract

ABSTRACT                      The increase in tourist visits to Bali has become a growing place in various sectors in Bali which have an impact on health support facilities in the form of international hospitals. In its supporting activities, English language is the main thing in this field health workers, especially nurses who are able to communicate in English are needed to achieve good communication with international patients who visit the hospital. English language proficiency possessed by nurse nurses is professional in providing care to patients where nurses must be able to explain nursing procedures, drug administration, appropriate handling that allows patients to speak accurately and correctly. The lack of ability of a student in English is a phenomenon that occurs due to various factors. This study raised the ability of 5th semester nursing students in Stikes Bina Usada Bali. In this study, Stikes Bina Usada Bali students majoring in Nursing were the object of research. This study aims to analyze the problems faced by students of Stikes Bina Usada Bali in the pronunciation and analysis of factors that influence the ability of English Language on students at Stikes Bina Usada Bali. Descriptive data was used to analyse data in this study. This study shows that nursing students at Stikes Bina Usada Bali experience problems in English as the influence of the mother tongue (main language of each student) and second language (Indonesian). Several factors also influence the ability of students to speak in the form of internal and external factors such as language components and content components and the environment during the learning process.  Keywords: speaking ability, pronunciation, nurse, diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Abstract                 This study attempts to describe the cohesive devices used in the Maxx Brides Magazine. There are at least two factors that influence the text, those are cohesion and coherence. Cohesion provides the relation of meaning that exists within the text. Meanwhile, coherence is semantic property of discourse which is formed by interpretation of each relative sentence to other sentences .the coherent text is meaningful, unified and gives the impression. The qualitative analysis was applied in analyzing the sample texts. The finding showed that the demonstrative reference was the type most frequently used grammatical cohesion and synonym were the most frequently used lexical cohesion in the articles.

Abstract

Gender inequality is the one of global issues that still happen to this day. Research has shown that inequality regarding gender mostly occurs in developing countries, causing many women on those countries lose many of their rights. Sadly, this also happens to Pakistani disabled Woman, Muniba Mazari. During her lifetime, she has received many unequal treatment from her family and husband. This paper aims to find out the struggle of Muniba Mazari in facing gender inequality so that the readers can get clear depiction on how women are treated unequally in some countries and to improve the readers’ awareness in responding to such social problem. This research was applied qualitative descriptive method by presenting the inequality based on Muniba Mazari’s speech. The applied theory came from Bourdieu of social structure and doxa, as well as Appraisal Theory will be used as a tool in disclosing the inequality. The results show that the inequality that Muniba got from her family and husband are sourced from the strong social structure and doxa spreading around her. Meanwhile, the appraisal theory shows that the most data implies unhappiness as Muniba did not accept her condition and felt oppressed of her previous life and unhappy marriage.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the error of the students in writing a narrative essay and to find out the factor that causes the errors. The students under concern were the second-semester students of academic year 2016 taking the English 2 subject at STIKOM Bali Dual-Degree Program. This study used the theory of Writing particularly Narrative Writing, and theory of Error Analysis. The theory of Writing was used to measure the students’ ability in making a narrative writing. The theory of Error Analysis was used to find out the students’ types of error, and also to find out their source of error. The result of this study showed that the highest error was the error of misformation with the percentage 70.45% and made by 13 students. The lowest error was the error of addition with the percentage 11.36% and made by 4 students. The error of omission was 18.18% and made by 7 students. From those result, it can be concluded that the source of the students’ error in narrative writing was caused by the intralingual interference since they were very confuse in using the type of sentence in their target language particularly in using simple past. It is hoped that this study can help teacher in preparing the materials to be easier to understand by the students and help them  improving their ability in narrative writing.

Abstract

  ABSTRACK This research is designed in form of action-based research which involved four steps in each circle, namely planning, action, observation and reflection.  Before treatment, pre-test is conducted in other to know the students’ ability at the beginning. So, the achievement can be compared to the next circle. Circle I consisted of four sessions; three sessions for conducting actions and one session administering post-test I. Circle II consisted of three sessions; two sessions for conducting actions and one session for post-test II. The aim of this research is to know the implementation of flash card game through vocabulary mastery of disabled students at Yayasan Bakti Senang Hati. This research is conducted at Yayasan Bakti Senang Hati which some disabled students are used as the subject of the research. It used seven kategories of vocabulary such as animal, family, fruits, number, things, vegetables and part of body as the instrument in colleting the data. The result of data showed that the use of flash card game could improve the vocabulary mastery of disabled students at Yayasan Bakti Senang Hati. It can be seen from the result of the students’ achievement tests which increased continuously during the application of the technique. During the pre-test, students are able to master 17 vocabularies from each category. Then, after the first Cilcle test there are 13 vocabularies form each category that they got. Therefore, their mastery became 30 vocabularies. Finnaly, it became 59 after the result of second cicle is held. Key words: vocabulary, flash card, implementation

Abstract

Abstract   This classroom action reseach was done in the area of speaking.  It was found that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 8 Denpasar got difficulty  in communicating and delivering ideas. The objective of this study was to figure out whether or not speaking  skill of the eleventh   grade students of SMAN 8 Denpasar in academic year 2017/2018 could be improved  through  British  Parliamentary  Style Debate Technique.  The research was undertaken based on the result of the interview with the teacher who taught the studentt. Pre-test was then carried out, and it was found that the subjects’ speaking skill was low. In order to settle down the problem, British Parliamentary Style Debate Technique was implemented as the technique to improve the subjects’ speaking skill. The study was conducted in two cycles. Furthermore, the result of post- test in each cycle showed that there were significant improvements on the subjects’ speaking skill after British  Parliamentary  Style  Debate technique  was applied. After the treatment of pre-test, the reflection or post-test was administered.   The mean figure of the reflection or post-test scores obtained by the subjects under study in cycle I was 70.52. and cycle  II  was  78.34. In addition, based on the data of the questionnaire, the subjects’ responses towards the application of the technique was positive.  Therefore, it could be concluded that speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 8 Denpasar in academic year 2017/2018 could be improved through British Parliamentary Style Debate Technique.   Keywords: Improving, Speaking, British Parliamentary Style Debate Technique
