Ellipsis is one of phenomenon in language use. Traditionally, ellipsis is the grammar means that avoids repetitions, abandons the old information, highlights key words and make the context connected tightly. The structure of the sentence that occur ellipsis phenomenon of course will have changed and quite different with the common grammatical sentence which used the rules but still have same meaning. There is lot of ellipsis phenomenon happened in discourse, one of them is in written text such a novel. In novel we can find various phenomenon of language use by the author to make the story leave a certain impression, interesting and not boring in reading it. Novel Sherlock Holmes was chosen as the data source of this research because there are a lot of type ellipsis phenomenon found. It mainly aimed at investigating types of ellipsis phenomenon occurred in the novel completed by showing the structure of constituent that construct the sentences in tree diagram. The discussion is not only in Syntax view point, this research also tries to describe the function of the ellipsis, because actually ellipsis  is not only used for the speaker’s economy but it can have many other function such can remove ambiguity, can convey non-expressible aspect of meaning, can establish discourse coherence and contribute to a positive rapport with the hearer (Hendriks & Spenader: 2005). Knowing how the ellipsis happened can be an important thing to identify the functions. The data focused on the sentences that got from narration and dialogs that found in this fictional private detective novel. The method of collecting the data used direct observation method by reading the novel which contains 1059 pages, then collected the sentences which occur ellipsis, checked the structure of the sentences while choosing some sentences that represent various sentence structure of elliptical phenomenon and functions based on theory used. After the data collected, they analyzed by some theories. The types of ellipsis phenomenon analyzed using Kiss and Alexiadou (2015) collected theories, then the structure investigated by Brown (1991) theory, and the function analyzed by Hendricks & Spenader (2005) theory.

Abstract

Abstract   Long and short sentences affect the reader?s pace of reading story since the have to farce the complexity of the sentences and words used in it. In this study the researcher attempted to see the impact of the use of long and short sentences on the pace of the story as implemented by Anthony Horowitz, a novelist, in his novel Raven?s Gate. Especially the researcher is looking at what types of long and short sentences the novelist is using and how these long and short sentences are building up his story line and their effect on the pace of the story. A sentence with the length of up-to fourteen (14) words is considered to be short and the one over 14 words is considered to be long in spite its grammatical form, whether it is simple or complex. The criteria are based on empirical study as mentioned by Casi Newell in the AJE (American Journal Experts) retrieved from https://www.aje.com/en/arc/editing-tip-sentence-length/, that ?the average sentence length in scientific manuscripts is 12-17 words,? with JK Rowling?the writer of Harry Potter?who can be considered to be representative of a modern English writer with a general audience, having the average of 12 words. For convenience we take the liberty of taking 14 words for the longest sort sentences and those which have 15 or more words are considered to be long sentences. We expect that length of sentences would have significance in revealing the pace of the story through its choice of words and sentence constructions. Key words: pacing, short sentence, long sentence, simple sentence, complex/compound sentence

Abstract

Abstract   Throwing verbs in Balinese language have several lexicon variations which show differences in the meaning context. Different mentions depend on what is used to throw, the extent of the throw, the target of the throw, and the effects caused by the throw. This verb analysis is examined based on the Natural Semantics Metalanguage (NSM) approach which is a modern semantic study initiated by Wierzbicka (1996) which aims to describe the lexical, grammatical, and illocutionary meaning of a language. The results obtained that throwing verbs can be divided into two groups, namely based on the target throwing (nyabat, nyampar, nylampar, nylémpang, nimpug, and medut), and without target throwing (nguerang and ngentungang), verbs meaning 'throwing' in Balinese only has one prototype, that is, the prototype of action and this prototype also only has one default meaning type, namely the type of doing: thrown, and semantic verb structure which means 'throwing' in Balinese has a syntactic pattern NSM X does something at Y and Y thrown by X.   Keywords : throwing verbs, Balinese language, MSA

The data sources of this study are the utterance of native speaker and non-native speaker. Data obtained by using observation method with uninvolved conversation observation technique and record techniques. Data containing illocutionary speech acts then analyzed descriptively qualitatively based on theories of speech act proposed by Searle (1969) and Leech (1974) about meaning. The results showed that the directive speech acts used by native speakers and non-native speakers were requirements, requestives, questions, prohibitive, permissives and advisories. The meanings of directive speech acts spoken by native speakers and non-native speakers are analyzed from the context of the conversation. The meaning of speech acts for the native speaker tends to be connotative and sometimes contains affective meaning. Whereas the meaning of speech acts of non-native speaker tend to use a combination of connotative, denotative, and affective meanings.
