Abstract

In communication, humans may express their ideas by involving their attitudes, feelings, judgement, or emotions  that can be identified from the expressions or words used. There is a system called appraisal can be used to study interpersonal meanings of the utterances. This study aims at investigating types of appraisals in the Jakarta Post article entitled Ending Poverty, Ending Violence against Women and finding out which appraisal mostly occurred in the article. The procedures of data collection were a) identifying the appraisal items; b) classifying the appraisal items; c) calculating the occurrence of each category; d) summarizing the kinds of appraisal items; e) interpreting the appraisal items. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively. The result shows that appreciation, affect, judgment, and amplification are used in the article; and the most dominant category used is judgment. This implies that in writing articles in newspapers, the writers tend to give judgement on the issues discussed.

Abstract

This purpose of this article was to critically assert the contribution of qualitative research in education. The article offers a theoretical exploration of qualitative (qualitative historical background, features, methods and qualitative strengths and weaknesses) and a structural critical analysis on qualitative studies (study purpose, literature review, study design, method, results and discussion, and conclusion). Two qualitative education research paper were selected and analysed with a view to arguing that qualitative research gives more contributions than others. The results of the analysis indicated that qualitative research positively contributes to education research in many ways, including the possibility of direct interaction in gathering the data, and providing in-depth and critical interpretation of meanings

Abstract

The prevalence of learning Chinese in the United States is very popular with the learning Chinese language throughout the world. This atmosphere is very encouraging for children in Chinese schools and improves their learning motivation. This research is action research and the purpose of this study is (1) to explore the current situation of teaching Chinese in the United States and to answer the research questions based on the reaction and self-reflection of young children, (2) to revise teaching materials and teaching methods during the research, (3) to utilize the innovation story theater model into the Chinese curriculum of the bilingual school in USA, and (4) to find out the suggestions and feasible solutions to the various problems. The research found that if learning activities are intrinsically attractive there is no need to arrange any games to motivate children's learning. Moreover, the findings show that the innovative story theater is very practical and can effectively enhance children's interest in learning Chinese

Abstract

This article describes types and functions of interpersonal metadiscourse in printed advertisement tagline. The three types, i.e. person marker, hedges, and emphatics have various roles in interpreting properly tagline meaning. The writer uses Hyland’s metadiscourse theory, Fuertes-Olivera et al’s interpersonal discourse in slogans, and Halliday’s functional grammar to analyze the data. The data were collected from printed advertisements by World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The result shows that each of the interpersonal metadiscourse features has different functions. Person marker is used to show the writer’s position in a text, hedges is used to imply the writer’s opinion, while emphatics serves as a device to convince the readers that the messages given in the text are true.   Artikel ini mendeskripsikan jenis dan fungsi ‘interpersonal metadiscourse’ yang tercetak di ‘tagline’ iklan. Ketiga jenis, yaitu penanda orang, pemagaran, dan penegasan mempunyai berbagai peranan untuk menafsirkan makna tagline secara tepat. Penulis menggunakan teori ‘metadiscourse’ (Hyland), ‘interpersonal discourse’ dalam slogan (Fuertes-Olivera dkk.), dan ‘functional grammar’ (Halliday) untuk menganalisis data. Data dikumpulkan dari beberapa iklan cetak ‘World Wild Fund’ (WWF). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap jenis memiliki fungsi yang berbeda. Penanda orang digunakan untuk menunjukkan posisi penulis dalam sebuah teks, pemagaran digunakan untuk menyatakan secara tidak langsung pendapat penulis, sementara penegasan berfungsi sebagai alat untuk meyakinkan pembaca bahwa pesan yang diberikan dalam teks benar.

Abstract

Place naming is a form of linkage of language, culture and thought. This study examines the process of Lamongan City naming by finding naming patterns which reflects the values ​​and beliefs. In addition, this study also seeks the structure of the mark in naming formation of Lamongan and finds acceptance of Sapir-Worf hypothesis in the process of toponymy of Lamongan. Qualitative descriptive approach and informal data presentation methods was used to process and present expected data. Toponymy of Lamongan is associated with a figure named Hadi, Sunan Giri’s student assigned to guide and lead the Lamongan community. Penamaan suatu tempat merupakan bentuk keterkaitan antara bahasa, budaya, dan pikiran. Penelitian ini berusaha mengkaji proses penamaan Kota Lamongan dengan menemukan pola pemberian nama yang merefleksikan nilai dan keyakinan yang direfeksikan pada nama tempat tersebut. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga berusaha untuk menemukan struktur tanda dalam pembentukan penamaan Kabupaten Lamongan dan menemukan keberterimaan hipotesis Sapir-Worf dalam proses toponimi Kabupaten Lamongan. Pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dan metode penyajian data informal digunakan untuk mengolah dan menyajikan data yang diharapkan. Toponimi Lamongan sangat berkaitan dengan sosok yang bernama Hadi, murid Sunan Giri yang ditugaskan untuk membimbing dan memimpin masyarakat Lamongan.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the Islamic Economy students’ needs and wants in learning English at State Islamic University of Pekalongan. The researcher used questionnaire to investigate and elicit opinion related to the needs, demands for English skills and preference of English learning activities, difficulties and barriers encountered by the students in learning English. The result reveals that most students show high demand on the speaking skill and want to develop it more. Besides, this research reveals that the students are facing difficulties and problems in communication because of the lacks of vocabulary, speaking skill, and grammar. Considering this result, it is suggested that the instructor/lecturer need to give more input of vocabularies especially vocabularies related to students’ major and occupational purposes.

Abstract

This article is on the social and cultural contents of textbooks for foreign language learners. Some textbooks, published for foreign learners in various languages, are selected in random way before being observed carefully. The basic assumption is that most (or even all) textbooks will introduce to the prospective learners some socio-cultural information embedded in the target language which, inevitably, the learners will have to deal with. The sociolinguistics has it that no language can be separated from the socio-cultural issues. The fact enables any language to survive and linger on. Therefore, all good textbooks must contain the socio-cultural issues relevant to the current language usage in daily interactions

Abstract

The practice of bilingual program in educational system in Indonesia is to improve the quality of education in secondary school. The achievement of such objective could be observed from teacher-student classroom interaction. The present paper addresses the math teachers’ strategies and interaction types in structuring classroom activities and type of interaction using English in teaching Math at bilingual class on a private and public junior high school in Yogyakarta. Research findings show that due to mediocre level of English they employed several strategies such as maximizing the use of textbooks or students’ worksheet, maximizing individual work, using demonstration in presenting the topics, and performing translation. The interaction types are mostly in the form of telling and instructing.   Pelaksanaan program bilingual dalam system pendidikan di Indonesia adalah untuk meningkatakan kualitas pendidikan di tingkat sekolah menengah. Pencapaian tujuan tersebut dapat diamati dari interaksi guru dan siswa di kelas. Paper ini mengungkap strategi yang digunakan guru matematika dalam mengembangkan aktivitas pembelajaran dengan bahasa Inggris sebagai pengantar pada program bilingual di salah satu sekolah menengah pertama swasta dan negeri di Yogyakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa para guru matematika menggunakan beberapa strategi dalam berinteraksi dengan siswa, seperti memaksimalkan penggunaan buku teks atau lembar kerja siswa, memaksimalkan tugas individu, mendemonstrasikan materi yang diajarkan, dan menterjemahkan. Sebagai kompensasi atas keterbatasan penguasaan bahasa Inggris mereka, jenis interaksi yang digunakan adalah memberi instruksi dan informasi

Abstract

The objective of this research is to provide an understanding of language acquisition children aged 1.4 years in bilingual families in terms of morphology and phonology. The researcher used a qualitative approach by using case study method. Data collection technique used is documentation and observation. Data were analyzed using inductive models, with the steps: observation of data, insights into the structure of the data, the formulation of hypotheses, testing hypotheses. The results of this research indicate that the language acquisition of children aged 1.4 years on average amounted to 40 words that structure largely intact as a word yet, but it is understood its meaning. Language acquisition obtained from the two languages simultaneously (simultaneous bilingual) language is Indonesian and Bengkulu. The children are able to pronounce vowels a, i, u, e, and o in forming words. Then, the boy also has been able to say 13 consonants, namely b, c, d, h, j, k, m, n, p, s, t, w and y. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan aspek fonologis dan morfologis pemerolehan bahasa anak berusia 1,4 tahun dalam keluarga bilingual. Penelitian adalah studi kasus menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dengan metode dokumentasi dan observasi. Data dianalisis dengan model induktif dengan beberapa langkah, yaitu pengamatan terhadap objek yang diteliti, pemahaman terhadap struktur data, penyusunan hipotesis, dan pengujian hipotesis. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pemerolehan bahasa anak 1,4 tahun rata-rata memiliki 40 kata dengan memahami maknanya. Pemerolehan bahasa yang dilakukan dapat dikategorikan sebagai dwibahasawan simultan, yaitu Indonesia dan Bengkulu. Anak itu mampu menghasilkan bunyi vokal a, i, u, e, dan o dalam membentuk kata. Selain itu, anak tersebut dapat menghasilkan 13 konsonan, yaitu b, c, d, h, j, k, m, n, p, s, t, w dan y.
