Abstract

This paper aims to elaborate cognitivism and its implications to the second language learning. Cognitive theory or approach views the learner as a thinking being and an active processor of information. Thus, learning is a process in which the learner actively tries to analyze the situations where the application of the rule would be appropriate and to make sense of data. In other words, we learn by thinking about and trying to make sense of what we see, hear and feel.  In order to get a clear picture of the cognitive theory in relation to second language learning, other related theories were also described briefly from the historical points of view. In general cognitivism can be grouped under the innatist model which is also known as ‘nativist’. ‘mentalism’ (thinking as rule-governed activity), ‘rationalism’. The implications of cognitive theories can be revealed in the basic teaching techniques which cover activities such as problem-based solving activity, discovery learning, cognitive strategies, project-based learning, etc.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the types of question, response, and presupposition appearing in the process of investigative interview.  The question types forwarded by the investigator to the witness would be different from the questions forwarded to the suspect.  Similarly, responses  by the witness or the suspect toward the questions were different from each other, depending on  their interpretation.  The data were collected from the  investigative interview in the two different cases at the time of taking BAP (Minutes of the Invesitgation). For the cases of fraud and embezzlement,  of 113 questions the majority were open questions (61.9%) and the minority close questions (38.1%). Similarly, for the case of dump truck robbing, of 216 questions the majority  were  open questions (83.4%) and the minority close questions (16.6%).

Abstract

This small-scale exploratory study attempts to trace and taxonomize English reduplicative loans used in Bangla. Reduplicatives are the products of the morphological process known as ‘reduplication’ i.e. doubling of a word, stem or root. For example, ‘ha ha’, ‘dilly dally’, ‘hocus pocus’ etc. Though reduplication interfaces with both phonology and morphology, it is customarily included in the latter component of linguistics. The prime purpose of this paper is to detect and classify the morphological products in the form of reduplicative loans to Bangla from the English language. For the detection of loan reduplicatives, lexicographic works have been consulted. Social media sites have also contributed to the corpus on which this research is based. Our corpus reveals that Bangla has two types of English-based reduplicative loans – unchanged and changed. The unchanged category includes onomatopoeic and baby-talk reduplicatives. The members of the changed category, on the other hand, undergo different morphological modifications. One visible feature of the changed reduplicatives is that they are not borrowed as direct reduplicatives – initially they are borrowed as a single lexical item and then reduplication is carried out following the morphological rules of Bangla. Numerically speaking, the changed reduplicatives far outnumber the unchanged reduplicatives. There are a few English-based reduplicative loans that have been assimilated into the fabric of Bangla language – these few words are so strongly Banglicized that their English identity is unrecognizable without the help of etymological dictionaries. Apart from this fully integrated small category, there exists another class of loan reduplicatives that has effaced some full, unalloyed, internally sourceable reduplicatives. These guest reduplicatives along with their host peers and pair members have been instrumental in seasoning, salting and peppering Bangla.

Abstract

This article aims at finding out the reading comprehension-question levels as constructed for some chapters of English Students’ Book for Grade X published in 2017 by The Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The data were taken purposively and analyzed using Barrett’s taxonomy of reading comprehension to examine the levels of comprehension questions provided in the book. While higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) in Bloom’s taxonomy involve students to analyze, to evaluate, and to create, Barrett’s reading comprehension levels exhibit corresponding features, namely inferential comprehension, evaluation, and appreciation. The analysis is to show the corresponse the reading comprehension questions in the book to the current issues of HOTS in the curriculum policy of Indonesia. The results demonstrate that while some of the comprehension questions (21%) comply with the higher level of reading comprehension, the rest (nearly 80%) show lower level of reading comprehension. In response to the implementation of the curriculum policy in Indonesia, teachers need to practice constructing higher levels of comprehension questions that considerably make students get used to think critically

Abstract

This research employed a mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. To achieve the aims of the study, quasi-experimental design was used, involving two groups (control and experiment) at the first grade in one Islamic elementary school in Bandung and employing pretest, treatment (TPR method to experiment group, conventional method to control group) and posttest. The result of control class score computation to compare pretest score with posttest score showed that there is no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test score of control class. On the contrary, the result of experiment class score computation to compare pretest score with posttest score showed that there was significant difference between the pretest and posttest score of experiment class. Therefore, it can be concluded that the vocabulary mastery of experiment group was significantly improved.
