Abstract

Gender equality has been an issue in many societies. It becomes a highlighted issue, and novels Larung and Cantik itu Luka offer the reader insight into the issue. This research compared two novels that talk about gender issues, especially how women are represented. The research found that inequality occurs in a society because of factors of Power and Resistance from the superior and inferior groups. Using Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis Framework, the researcher uncovers how the novel’s writer shares their thought about the gender issue. The analysis also integrates Halliday's Transitivity theory to parse clauses and Mills' theory of sexism to deconstruct discourse practices. The result is the gender issue that happens when there is inequality in the Proportion of chance and the dynamic role of gender in a society. This research reveals how both novels address the issue with a different approach to introduce a society that focuses on women’s perspectives of gender inequality and domination.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the evolving neologism, ephemeral discourse, and socio-cultural significance of 10 Chinese internet buzzwords in 2021, which are 双减 (shuāng jiǎn), 躺平 (tǎng píng), 元宇宙 (yuán yǔzhòu), YYDS , 社交牛逼症 (shèjiāo niú bī zhèng), 绝绝子 (jué jué zi), 跌妈不认 (yuán yǔzhòu), 破防 (pò fang), 鸡娃 (jīwá), and Emo. Employing a quantitative and qualitative approach, we collected those buzzwords from news articles and analyzed their usage trends using the WeChat Index from 2021 to 2024. This study revealed the creative word formation processes and semantic properties of these neologisms among the Chinese netspeak. The WeChat Index data showed that 7 out of the 10 buzzwords experienced a decline in popularity after two years, while three buzzwords maintained an upward trend. Using the concept of ephemeral discourse and critical discourse analysis, we explored how these buzzwords addressed key social, cultural, and political issues, such as education reform, social pressures faced by youth, and the impact of technology on society. The buzzwords popularity trends were influenced by factors such as the natural lifecycle of neologisms, shifting public priorities, and societal attitudes. Keywords: Chinese Internet Buzzwords, Neologisms, Ephemeral Discourse, WeChat Index, Critical Discourse Analysis.

Abstract

Textbooks play a central role in shaping learners’ perceptions of social roles, including those related to gender in science education. This study investigates how gender is visually and discursively represented in the Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial (IPAS) Grade 4 textbook issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the research integrates Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine 44 illustrations from the natural science chapters. The analysis focuses on how agency, authority, and scientific roles are distributed across male and female characters in both visual (e.g., posture, salience) and verbal (e.g., speech functions, cognitive authority) modes. The findings indicate that male characters are more frequently depicted and are often positioned in dominant scientific roles, while female characters appear less frequently and are generally portrayed as passive, supportive, or non-expert. Although a few scenes offer inclusive representations, these are limited and do not significantly alter the prevailing gender asymmetry. The study concludes that despite policy emphasis on equity, the textbook continues to reflect traditional gender norms, particularly in STEM-related contexts. It highlights the need for intentional alignment between visual and verbal elements to support inclusive and equitable science education.
