Abstract

Since English is used as a lingua franca, the growth of English users is getting bigger. The tremendous growth of English users has generated variety of English, i.e. Englishes. Such variety could affect EFL pedagogy. This paper, then, explores EFL teachers’ perception on Englishes. By employing a survey study, it is found that EFL teachers agree that it is useful for both English teachers and students to know the variety of English. However, in the teaching practice, they prefer to integrate it to other language skills and language components rather than teaching it in isolation. Besides, adopting exonormative norm, i.e. American English or British English is still used in the common teaching practice. (92)

Abstract

This paper deals with a Javanese joke commonly used by Javanese parents to teach their young children a kind of typical cultural wisdom in accordance with their effort of socializing subsistence ethics. The respondents are all postgraduate students. Their age is roughly distinguished into two broad categories: (1) around 30 years, and (2) above 40 years. Most of those in the first category do not understand the essence of the joke at all, whereas all of those in the second category do remember and completely understand it. The reasons for their un/intelligibility become of paramount importance. Besides, the discourse of the typical joke also shows that a tiny piece of such a traditional product may reveal the process of meaning-making, in the study of language use, which is very “political” in characteristics.

Abstract

AbstractThis study investigates compliment responses (CRs) produced by Malaysian Chinese undergraduates in Arts & Social Science and Science & Technology Studies. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which academic major influences compliment responses of participants from two major groups. The data of this study was collected from 30 Malaysian Chinese undergraduate students (15 in each major group) in one public university in Malaysia. The data was collected by role-play scenarios consisting of 4 situations (appearance, character, ability and possession) which were then accompanied by a questionnaire. The findings of the study show that there were no marked differences between the two academic major groups in the choices of their CRs strategies. Malaysian Chinese undergraduates’ CRs are greatly influenced by their English proficiency, politeness and Chinese culture. They tend to use Acceptance strategy at macro level. At micro level, both academic groups preferred Appreciation strategy which is under the macro strategy of Acceptance. On the contrary, Rejection was the least preferred CRs strategy.

Abstract

This paper aims at discussing high and low context in responses given by the students to evaluate their friend’s impromptu speech performance. The study focuses on the characteristics of high and low context represented specifically on (1) direct-indirect (2) simple-complex response, and (3) relationship orientation. The study is based on the analysis of ten responses given by ten students with different sexes. Classroom observation followed by transcription analysis is used. The data were collected naturally at undergraduate campus. The result shows that using indirect and complex responses can maintain harmonious relationship with others. The basic asumption is that the students tend to communicate in high level context.

Abstract

This research aims at showing the uniqueness of tuturan halus basa Semarangan. The uniqueness can be seen from the way the users place the lexical item of krama inggril in their tuturan halus as the reflection of politeness behavior. With sociolinguistic approach, I used contextual descriptive method to analyze the data based on the following speech components: (1) speaker, (2) hearer, (3) situation, (4) purposes, and  (5) topic. The result shows that there are some features of tuturan halus basa Semarangan which violate standard Javanese. The features are as follows. (1) The lexical item of  krama inggil can be attached not only to the hearer but also to the speaker him/herself; and (2) eventhough the lexical item attached to the speaker him/herself it can be used to respect the hearer.
